士師記 Judges 1 1
1 1 Now after the death of Joshua it came to pass that the children of Israel asked the Lord, saying, "Who shall be first to go up for us against the Canaanites to fight against them?" ヨシュアが死んだ後、イスラエルの人々は主に問うて言った、「わたしたちのうち、だれが先に攻め上って、カナンびとと戦いましょうか」。
1 2 And the Lord said, "Judah shall go up. Indeed I have delivered the land into his hand." 主は言われた、「ユダが上るべきである。わたしはこの国を彼の手にわたした」。
1 3 So Judah said to Simeon his brother, "Come up with me to my allotted territory, that we may fight against the Canaanites; and I will likewise go with you to your allotted territory." And Simeon went with him. ユダはその兄弟シメオンに言った、「わたしと一緒に、わたしに割り当てられた領地へ上って行って、カナンびとと戦ってください。そうすればわたしもあなたと一緒に、あなたに割り当てられた領地へ行きましょう」。そこでシメオンは彼と一緒に行った。
1 4 Then Judah went up, and the Lord delivered the Canaanites and the Perizzites into their hand; and they killed ten thousand men at Bezek. ユダが上って行くと、主は彼らの手にカナンびととペリジびととをわたされたので、彼らはベゼクで一万人を撃ち破り、
1 5 And they found Adoni-Bezek in Bezek, and fought against him; and they defeated the Canaanites and the Perizzites. またベゼクでアドニベゼクに会い、彼と戦ってカナンびととペリジびととを撃ち破った。
1 6 Then Adoni-Bezek fled, and they pursued him and caught him and cut off his thumbs and big toes. アドニベゼクは逃げたが、彼らはそのあとを追って彼を捕え、その手足の親指を切り放った。
1 7 And Adoni-Bezek said, "Seventy kings with their thumbs and big toes cut off used to gather scraps under my table; as I have done, so God has repaid me." Then they brought him to Jerusalem, and there he died. アドニベゼクは言った、「かつて七十人の王たちが手足の親指を切られて、わたしの食卓の下で、くずを拾ったことがあったが、神はわたしがしたように、わたしに報いられたのだ」。人々は彼をエルサレムへ連れて行ったが、彼はそこで死んだ。
1 8 Now the children of Judah fought against Jerusalem and took it; they struck it with the edge of the sword and set the city on fire. ユダの人々はエルサレムを攻めて、これを取り、つるぎをもってこれを撃ち、町に火を放った。
1 9 And afterward the children of Judah went down to fight against the Canaanites who dwelt in the mountains, in the South,and in the lowland. その後、ユダの人々は山地とネゲブと平地に住んでいるカナンびとと戦うために下ったが、
1 10 Then Judah went against the Canaanites who dwelt in Hebron. (Now the name of Hebron was formerly Kirjath Arba.) And they killed Sheshai, Ahiman, and Talmai. ユダはまずヘブロンに住んでいるカナンびとを攻めて、セシャイとアヒマンとタルマイを撃ち破った。ヘブロンのもとの名はキリアテ・アルバであった。
1 11 From there they went against the inhabitants of Debir. (The name of Debir was formerly Kirjath Sepher.) またそこから進んでデビルの住民を攻めた。（デビルのもとの名はキリアテ・セペルであった。）
1 12Then Caleb said, "Whoever attacks Kirjath Sepher and takes it, to him I will give my daughter Achsah as wife." 時にカレブは言った、「キリアテ・セペルを撃って、これを取る者には、わたしの娘アクサを妻として与えるであろう」。
1 13 And Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother, took it; so he gave him his daughter Achsah as wife. カレブの弟ケナズの子オテニエルがそれを取ったので、カレブは娘アクサを妻として彼に与えた。
1 14 Now it happened, when she came to him, that she urged him to ask her father for a field. And she dismounted from her donkey, and Caleb said to her, "What do you wish?" アクサは行くとき彼女の父に畑を求めることを夫にすすめられたので、アクサがろばから降りると、カレブは彼女に言った、「あなたは何を望むのか」。
1 15 So she said to him, "Give me a blessing; since you have given me land in the South, give me also springs of water." And Caleb gave her the upper springs and the lower springs. アクサは彼に言った、「わたしに贈り物をください。あなたはわたしをネゲブの地へやられるのですから、泉をもください」。それでカレブは上の泉と下の泉とを彼女に与えた。
1 16 Now the children of the Kenite, Moses' father-in-law, went up from the City of Palms with the children of Judah into the Wilderness of Judah, which lies in the South near Arad; and they went and dwelt among the people. モーセのしゅうとであるケニびとの子孫はユダの人々と共に、しゅろの町からアラドに近いネゲブにあるユダの野に上ってきて、アマレクびとと共に住んだ。
1 17 And Judah went with his brother Simeon, and they attacked the Canaanites who inhabited Zephath, and utterly destroyed it. So the name of the city was called Hormah. そしてユダはその兄弟シメオンと共に行って、ゼパテに住んでいたカナンびとを撃ち、それをことごとく滅ぼした。これによってその町の名はホルマと呼ばれた。
1 18 Also Judah took Gaza with its territory, Ashkelon with its territory, and Ekron with its territory. ユダはまたガザとその地域、アシケロンとその地域、エクロンとその地域を取った。
1 19 So the Lord was with Judah. And they drove out the mountaineers, but they could not drive out the inhabitants of the lowland, because they had chariots of iron. 主がユダと共におられたので、ユダはついに山地を手に入れたが、平地に住んでいた民は鉄の戦車をもっていたので、これを追い出すことができなかった。
1 20 And they gave Hebron to Caleb, as Moses had said. Then he expelled from there the three sons of Anak. 人々はモーセがかつて言ったように、ヘブロンをカレブに与えたので、カレブはその所からアナクの三人の子を追い出した。
1 21 But the children of Benjamin did not drive out the Jebusites who inhabited Jerusalem; so the Jebusites dwell with the children of Benjamin in Jerusalem to this day. ベニヤミンの人々はエルサレムに住んでいたエブスびとを追い出さなかったので、エブスびとは今日までベニヤミンの人々と共にエルサレムに住んでいる。
1 22 And the house of Joseph also went up against Bethel, and the Lord was with them. ヨセフの一族はまたベテルに攻め上ったが、主は彼らと共におられた。
1 23 So the house of Joseph sent men to spy out Bethel. (The name of the city was formerly Luz.) すなわちヨセフの一族は人をやってベテルを探らせた。この町のもとの名はルズであった。
1 24 And when the spies saw a man coming out of the city, they said to him, "Please show us the entrance to the city, and we will show you mercy." その斥候たちは町から出てきた人を見て、言った、「どうぞこの町にはいる道を教えてください。そうすればわたしたちはあなたに恵みを施しましょう」。
1 25 So he showed them the entrance to the city, and they struck the city with the edge of the sword; but they let the man and all his family go. 彼が町にはいる道を教えたので、彼らはつるぎをもって町を撃った。しかし、かの人とその家族は自由に去らせた。
1 26 And the man went to the land of the Hittites, built a city, and called its name Luz, which is its name to this day. その人はヘテびとの地に行って町を建て、それをルズと名づけた。これは今日までその名である。
1 27However, Manasseh did not drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shean and its villages, or Taanach and its villages, or the inhabitants of Dor and its villages, or the inhabitants of Ibleam and its villages, or the inhabitants of Megiddo and its villages; for the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land. マナセはベテシャンとその村里の住民、タアナクとその村里の住民、ドルとその村里の住民、イブレアムとその村里の住民、メギドとその村里の住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは引き続いてその地に住んでいたが、
1 28 And it came to pass, when Israel was strong, that they put the Canaanites under tribute, but did not completely drive them out. イスラエルは強くなったとき、カナンびとを強制労働に服させ、彼らをことごとくは追い出さなかった。
1 29 Nor did Ephraim drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; so the Canaanites dwelt in Gezer among them. またエフライムはゲゼルに住んでいたカナンびとを追い出さなかったので、カナンびとはゲゼルにおいて彼らのうちに住んでいた。
1 30 Nor did Zebulun drive out the inhabitants of Kitron or the inhabitants of Nahalol; so the Canaanites dwelt among them, and were put under tribute. ゼブルンはキテロンの住民およびナハラルの住民を追い出さなかったので、カナンびとは彼らのうちに住んで強制労働に服した。
1 31 Nor did Asher drive out the inhabitants of Acco or the inhabitants of Sidon, or of Ahlab, Achzib, Helbah, Aphik, or Rehob. アセルはアッコの住民およびシドン、アヘラブ、アクジブ、ヘルバ、アピク、レホブの住民を追い出さなかったので、
1 32 So the Asherites dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land; for they did not drive them out. アセルびとは、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。彼らが追い出さなかったからである。
1 33 Nor did Naphtali drive out the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh or the inhabitants of Beth Anath; but they dwelt among the Canaanites, the inhabitants of the land. Nevertheless the inhabitants of Beth Shemesh and Beth Anath were put under tribute to them. ナフタリはベテシメシの住民およびベテアナテの住民を追い出さずに、その地の住民であるカナンびとのうちに住んでいた。しかしベテシメシとベテアナテの住民は、ついに彼らの強制労働に服した。
1 34 And the Amorites forced the children of Dan into the mountains, for they would not allow them to come down to the valley; アモリびとはダンの人々を山地に追い込んで平地に下ることを許さなかった。
1 35and the Amorites were determined to dwell in Mount Heres, in Aijalon, and in Shaalbim; yet when the strength of the house of Joseph became greater, they were put under tribute. アモリびとは引き続いてハルヘレス、アヤロン、シャラビムに住んでいたが、ヨセフの一族の手が強くなったので、彼らは強制労働に服した。
1 36 Now the boundary of the Amorites was from the Ascent of Akrabbim, from Sela, and upward. アモリびとの境はアクラビムの坂からセラを経て上の方に及んだ。
士師記 Judges 2 2
2 1 Then the Angel of the Lord came up from Gilgal to Bochim, and said: "I led you up from Egypt and brought you to the land of which I swore to your fathers; and I said, 'I will never break My covenant with you. 主の使がギルガルからボキムに上って言った、「わたしはあなたがたをエジプトから上らせて、あなたがたの先祖に誓った地に連れてきて、言った、『わたしはあなたと結んだ契約を決して破ることはない。
2 2 And you shall make no covenant with the inhabitants of this land; you shall tear down their altars.' But you have not obeyed My voice. Why have you done this? あなたがたはこの国の住民と契約を結んではならない。彼らの祭壇をこぼたなければならない』と。しかし、あなたがたはわたしの命令に従わなかった。あなたがたは、なんということをしたのか。
2 3 Therefore I also said, 'I will not drive them out before you; but they shall be thorns in your side, and their gods shall be a snare to you.' " それでわたしは言う、『わたしはあなたがたの前から彼らを追い払わないであろう。彼らはかえってあなたがたの敵となり、彼らの神々はあなたがたのわなとなるであろう』と」。
2 4 So it was, when the Angel of the Lord spoke these words to all the children of Israel, that the people lifted up their voices and wept. 主の使がこれらの言葉をイスラエルのすべての人々に告げたので、民は声をあげて泣いた。
2 5 Then they called the name of that place Bochim; and they sacrificed there to the Lord. それでその所の名をボキムと呼んだ。そして彼らはその所で主に犠牲をささげた。
2 6 And when Joshua had dismissed the people, the children of Israel went each to his own inheritance to possess the land. ヨシュアが民を去らせたので、イスラエルの人々はおのおのその領地へ行って土地を獲た。
2 7So the people served the Lord all the days of Joshua, and all the days of the elders who outlived Joshua, who had seen all the great works of the Lord which He had done for Israel. 民はヨシュアの在世中も、またヨシュアのあとに生き残った長老たち、すなわち主がかつてイスラエルのために行われたすべての大いなるわざを見た人々の在世中も主に仕えた。
2 8 Now Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died when he was one hundred and ten years old. こうして主のしもべヌンの子ヨシュアは百十歳で死んだ。
2 9 And they buried him within the border of his inheritance at Timnath Heres, in the mountains of Ephraim, on the north side of Mount Gaash. 人々は彼をエフライムの山地のガアシ山の北のテムナテ・ヘレスにある彼の領地内に葬った。
2 10 When all that generation had been gathered to their fathers, another generation arose after them who did not know the Lord nor the work which He had done for Israel. そしてその時代の者もまたことごとくその先祖たちのもとにあつめられた。その後ほかの時代が起ったが、これは主を知らず、また主がイスラエルのために行われたわざをも知らなかった。
2 11 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and served the Baals; イスラエルの人々は主の前に悪を行い、もろもろのバアルに仕え、
2 12and they forsook the Lord God of their fathers, who had brought them out of the land of Egypt; and they followed other gods from among the gods of the people who were all around them, and they bowed down to them; and they provoked the Lord to anger. かつてエジプトの地から彼らを導き出された先祖たちの神、主を捨てて、ほかの神々すなわち周囲にある国民の神々に従い、それにひざまずいて、主の怒りをひき起した。
2 13 They forsook the Lord and served Baal and the Ashtoreths. すなわち彼らは主を捨てて、バアルとアシタロテに仕えたので、
2 14 And the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel. So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer stand before their enemies. 主の怒りがイスラエルに対して燃え、かすめ奪う者の手にわたして、かすめ奪わせ、かつ周囲のもろもろの敵の手に売られたので、彼らは再びその敵に立ち向かうことができなかった。
2 15 Wherever they went out, the hand of the Lord was against them for calamity, as the Lord had said, and as the Lord had sworn to them. And they were greatly distressed. 彼らがどこへ行っても、主の手は彼らに災をした。これは主がかつて言われ、また主が彼らに誓われたとおりで、彼らはひどく悩んだ。
2 16 Nevertheless, the Lord raised up judges who delivered them out of the hand of those who plundered them. その時、主はさばきづかさを起して、彼らをかすめ奪う者の手から救い出された。
2 17 Yet they would not listen to their judges, but they played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them. They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked, in obeying the commandments of the Lord; they did not do so. しかし彼らはそのさばきづかさにも従わず、かえってほかの神々を慕ってそれと姦淫を行い、それにひざまずき、先祖たちが主の命令に従って歩んだ道を、いちはやく離れ去って、そのようには行わなかった。
2 18 And when the Lord raised up judges for them, the Lord was with the judge and delivered them out of the hand of their enemies all the days of the judge; for the Lord was moved to pity by their groaning because of those who oppressed them and harassed them. 主が彼らのためにさばきづかさを起されたとき、そのさばきづかさの在世中、主はさばきづかさと共におられて、彼らを敵の手から救い出された。これは彼らが自分をしえたげ悩ました者のゆえに、うめき悲しんだので、主が彼らをあわれまれたからである。
2 19 And it came to pass, when the judge was dead, that they reverted and behaved more corruptly than their fathers, by following other gods, to serve them and bow down to them. They did not cease from their own doings nor from their stubborn way. しかしさばきづかさが死ぬと、彼らはそむいて、先祖たちにまさって悪を行い、ほかの神々に従ってそれに仕え、それにひざまずいてそのおこないをやめず、かたくなな道を離れなかった。
2 20 Then the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel; and He said, "Because this nation has transgressed My covenant which I commanded their fathers, and has not heeded My voice, それで主はイスラエルに対し激しく怒って言われた、「この民はわたしがかつて先祖たちに命じた契約を犯し、わたしの命令に従わないゆえ、
2 21 I also will no longer drive out before them any of the nations which Joshua left when he died, わたしもまたヨシュアが死んだときに残しておいた国民を、この後、彼らの前から追い払わないであろう。
2 22 so that through them I may test Israel, whether they will keep the ways of the Lord, to walk in them as their fathers kept them, or not." これはイスラエルが、先祖たちの守ったように主の道を守ってそれに歩むかどうかをわたしが試みるためである」。
2 23 Therefore the Lord left those nations, without driving them out immediately; nor did He deliver them into the hand of Joshua. それゆえ主はこれらの国民を急いで追い払わずに残しておいて、ヨシュアの手にわたされなかったのである。
士師記 Judges 3 3
3 1 Now these are the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan すべてカナンのもろもろの戦争を知らないイスラエルの人々を試みるために、主が残しておかれた国民は次のとおりである。
3 2 (this was only so that the generations of the children of Israel might be taught to know war, at least those who had not formerly known it), これはただイスラエルの代々の子孫、特にまだ戦争を知らないものに、それを教え知らせるためである。
3 3 namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath. すなわちペリシテびとの五人の君たちと、すべてのカナンびとと、シドンびとおよびレバノン山に住んで、バアル・ヘルモン山からハマテの入口までを占めていたヒビびとなどであって、
3 4 And they were left, that He might test Israel by them, to know whether they would obey the commandments of the Lord, which He had commanded their fathers by the hand of Moses. これらをもってイスラエルを試み、主がモーセによって先祖たちに命じられた命令に、彼らが従うかどうかを知ろうとされたのである。
3 5 Thus the children of Israel dwelt among the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites. しかるにイスラエルの人々はカナンびと、ヘテびと、アモリびと、ペリジびと、ヒビびと、エブスびとのうちに住んで、
3 6 And they took their daughters to be their wives, and gave their daughters to their sons; and they served their gods. 彼らの娘を妻にめとり、また自分たちの娘を彼らのむすこに与えて、彼らの神々に仕えた。
3 7 So the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. They forgot the Lord their God, and served the Baals and Asherahs. こうしてイスラエルの人々は主の前に悪を行い、自分たちの神、主を忘れて、バアルおよびアシラに仕えた。
3 8 Therefore the anger of the Lord was hot against Israel, and He sold them into the hand of Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia; and the children of Israel served Cushan-Rishathaim eight years. そこで主はイスラエルに対して激しく怒り、彼らをメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムの手に売りわたされたので、イスラエルの人々は八年の間、クシャン・リシャタイムに仕えた。
3 9 When the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for the children of Israel, who delivered them: Othniel the son of Kenaz, Caleb's younger brother. しかし、イスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主はイスラエルの人々のために、ひとりの救助者を起して彼らを救われた。すなわちカレブの弟、ケナズの子オテニエルである。
3 10 The Spirit of the Lord came upon him, and he judged Israel. He went out to war, and the Lord delivered Cushan-Rishathaim king of Mesopotamia into his hand; and his hand prevailed over Cushan-Rishathaim. 主の霊がオテニエルに臨んだので、彼はイスラエルをさばいた。彼が戦いに出ると、主はメソポタミヤの王クシャン・リシャタイムをその手にわたされたので、オテニエルの手はクシャン・リシャタイムに勝ち、
3 11 So the land had rest for forty years. Then Othniel the son of Kenaz died. 国は四十年のあいだ太平であった。ケナズの子オテニエルはついに死んだ。
3 12 And the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord strengthened Eglon king of Moab against Israel, because they had done evil in the sight of the Lord. イスラエルの人々はまた主の前に悪をおこなった。すなわち彼らが主の前に悪をおこなったので、主はモアブの王エグロンを強めて、イスラエルに敵対させられた。
3 13 Then he gathered to himself the people of Ammon and Amalek, went and defeated Israel, and took possession of the City of Palms. エグロンはアンモンおよびアマレクの人々を集め、きてイスラエルを撃ち、しゅろの町を占領した。
3 14 So the children of Israel served Eglon king of Moab eighteen years. こうしてイスラエルの人々は十八年の間モアブの王エグロンに仕えた。
3 15 But when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord, the Lord raised up a deliverer for them: Ehud the son of Gera, the Benjamite, a left-handed man. By him the children of Israel sent tribute to Eglon king of Moab. しかしイスラエルの人々が主に呼ばわったとき、主は彼らのために、ひとりの救助者を起された。すなわちベニヤミンびと、ゲラの子、左ききのエホデである。イスラエルの人々は彼によってモアブの王エグロンに、みつぎ物を送った。
3 16 Now Ehud made himself a dagger (it was double-edged and a cubit in length) and fastened it under his clothes on his right thigh. エホデは長さ一キュビトのもろ刃のつるぎを作らせ、それを衣の下、右のももの上に帯びて、
3 17 So he brought the tribute to Eglon king of Moab. (Now Eglon was a very fat man.) モアブの王エグロンにみつぎ物をもってきた。エグロンは非常に肥えた人であった。
3 18 And when he had finished presenting the tribute, he sent away the people who had carried the tribute. エホデがみつぎ物をささげ終ったとき、彼はみつぎ物をになってきた民を帰らせ、
3 19 But he himself turned back from the stone images that were at Gilgal, and said, "I have a secret message for you, O king." He said, "Keep silence!" And all who attended him went out from him. かれ自身はギルガルに近い石像のある所から引きかえして言った、「王よ、わたしはあなたに申しあげる機密をもっています」。そこで王は「さがっておれ」と言ったので、かたわらに立っている者は皆出て行った。
3 20 And Ehud came to him (now he was sitting upstairs in his cool private chamber). Then Ehud said, "I have a message from God for you." So he arose from his seat. エホデが王のところにはいって来ると、王はひとりで涼みの高殿に座していたので、エホデが「わたしは神の命によってあなたに申しあげることがあります」と言うと、王は座から立ちあがった。
3 21 Then Ehud reached with his left hand, took the dagger from his right thigh, and thrust it into his belly. そのときエホデは左の手を伸ばし、右のももからつるぎをとって王の腹を刺した。
3 22 Even the hilt went in after the blade, and the fat closed over the blade, for he did not draw the dagger out of his belly; and his entrails came out. つるぎのつかも刃と共にはいったが、つるぎを腹から抜き出さなかったので、脂肪が刃をふさいだ。そして汚物が出た。
3 23 Then Ehud went out through the porch and shut the doors of the upper room behind him and locked them. エホデは廊下に出て、王のおる高殿の戸を閉じ、錠をおろした。
3 24When he had gone out, Eglon's servants came to look, and to their surprise, the doors of the upper room were locked. So they said, "He is probably attending to his needs in the cool chamber." 彼が出た後、王のしもべどもがきて、高殿の戸に錠のおろされてあるのを見て、「王はきっと涼み殿のへやで足をおおっておられるのだ」と思った。
3 25 So they waited till they were embarrassed, and still he had not opened the doors of the upper room. Therefore they took the key and opened them. And there was their master, fallen dead on the floor. しもべどもは長いあいだ待っていたが、王がなお高殿の戸を開かないので、心配してかぎをとって開いて見ると、王は床にたおれて死んでいた。
3 26 But Ehud had escaped while they delayed, and passed beyond the stone images and escaped to Seirah. エホデは彼らのためらうまに、のがれて石像のある所を過ぎ、セイラに逃げていった。
3 27 And it happened, when he arrived, that he blew the trumpet in the mountains of Ephraim, and the children of Israel went down with him from the mountains; and he led them. 彼が行ってエフライムの山地にラッパを吹き鳴らしたので、イスラエルの人々は彼と共に山地から下ってエホデに従った。
3 28 Then he said to them, "Follow me, for the Lord has delivered your enemies the Moabites into your hand." So they went down after him, seized the fords of the Jordan leading to Moab, and did not allow anyone to cross over. エホデは彼らに言った、「わたしについてきなさい。主はあなたがたの敵モアブびとをあなたがたの手にわたされます」。そこで彼らはエホデに従って下り、ヨルダンの渡し場をおさえ、モアブびとをひとりも渡らせなかった。
3 29 And at that time they killed about ten thousand men of Moab, all stout men of valor; not a man escaped. そのとき彼らはモアブびとおおよそ一万人を殺した。これはいずれも肥え太った勇士であって、ひとりも、のがれた者がなかった。
3 30 So Moab was subdued that day under the hand of Israel. And the land had rest for eighty years. こうしてモアブはその日イスラエルの手に服し、国は八十年のあいだ太平であった。

4 1 When Ehud was dead, the children of Israel again did evil in the sight of the Lord. エホデが死んだ後、イスラエルの人々がまた主の前に悪をおこなったので、
4 2So the Lord sold them into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor. The commander of his army was Sisera, who dwelt in Harosheth Hagoyim. 主は、ハゾルで世を治めていたカナンの王ヤビンの手に彼らを売りわたされた。ヤビンの軍勢の長はハロセテ・ゴイムに住んでいたシセラであった。
4 3 And the children of Israel cried out to the Lord; for Jabin had nine hundred chariots of iron, and for twenty years he harshly oppressed the children of Israel. 彼は鉄の戦車九百両をもち、二十年の間イスラエルの人々を激しくしえたげたので、イスラエルの人々は主に向かって呼ばわった。
4 4 Now Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lapidoth, was judging Israel at that time. そのころラピドテの妻、女預言者デボラがイスラエルをさばいていた。

4 9 So she said, "I will surely go with you; nevertheless there will be no glory for you in the journey you are taking, for the Lord will sell Sisera into the hand of a woman." 4 11 Now Heber the Kenite, of the children of Hobab the father-in-law of Moses, had separated himself from the Kenites and pitched his tent near the terebinth tree at Zaanaim, which is beside Kedesh. 時にケニびとヘベルはモーセのしゅうとホバブの子孫であるケニびとから分れて、ケデシに近いザアナイムのかしの木までも遠く行って天幕を張っていた。
4 12 And they reported to Sisera that Barak the son of Abinoam had gone up to Mount Tabor. アビノアムの子バラクがタボル山に上ったと、人々がシセラに告げたので、
4 13 So Sisera gathered together all his chariots, nine hundred chariots of iron, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth Hagoyim to the River Kishon. シセラは自分の戦車の全部すなわち鉄の戦車九百両と、自分と共におるすべての民をハロセテ・ゴイムからキション川に呼び集めた。
4 14 Then Deborah said to Barak, "Up! For this is the day in which the Lord has delivered Sisera into your hand. Has not the Lord gone out before you?" So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. デボラはバラクに言った、「さあ、立ちあがりなさい。きょうは主がシセラをあなたの手にわたされる日です。主はあなたに先立って出られるではありませんか」。そこでバラクは一万人を従えてタボル山から下った。
4 15 And the Lord routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 主はつるぎをもってシセラとすべての戦車および軍勢をことごとくバラクの前に撃ち敗られたので、シセラは戦車から飛びおり、徒歩で逃げ去った。
4 16 But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth Hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not a man was left. バラクは戦車と軍勢とを追撃してハロセテ・ゴイムまで行った。シセラの軍勢はことごとくつるぎにたおれて、残ったものはひとりもなかった。
4 17 However, Sisera had fled away on foot to the tent of Jael, the wife of Heber the Kenite; for there was peace between Jabin king of Hazor and the house of Heber the Kenite. しかしシセラは徒歩で逃げ去って、ケニびとヘベルの妻ヤエルの天幕に行った。ハゾルの王ヤビンとケニびとヘベルの家とは互にむつまじかったからである。
4 18 And Jael went out to meet Sisera, and said to him, "Turn aside, my lord, turn aside to me; do not fear." And when he had turned aside with her into the tent, she covered him with a blanket. ヤエルは出てきてシセラを迎え、彼に言った、「おはいりください。主よ、どうぞうちへおはいりください。恐れるにはおよびません」。シセラが天幕にはいったので、ヤエルは毛布をもって彼をおおった。
4 19 Then he said to her, "Please give me a little water to drink, for I am thirsty." So she opened a jug of milk, gave him a drink, and covered him. シセラはヤエルに言った、「どうぞ、わたしに水を少し飲ませてください。のどがかわきましたから」。ヤエルは乳の皮袋を開いて彼に飲ませ、また彼をおおった。
4 20 And he said to her, "Stand at the door of the tent, and if any man comes and inquires of you, and says, 'Is there any man here?' you shall say, 'No.' " シセラはまたヤエルに言った、「天幕の入口に立っていてください。もし人がきて、あなたに『だれか、ここにおりますか』と問うならば『おりません』と答えてください」。

4 22 And then, as Barak pursued Sisera, Jael came out to meet him, and said to him, "Come, I will show you the man whom you seek." 5 19 "The kings came and fought, Then the kings of Canaan fought In Taanach, by the waters of Megiddo; They took no spoils of silver. もろもろの王たちはきて戦った。その時カナンの王たちは、／メギドの水のほとりのタアナクで戦った。彼らは一片の銀をも獲なかった。
5 20 They fought from the heavens; The stars from their courses fought against Sisera. もろもろの星は天より戦い、／その軌道をはなれてシセラと戦った。

5 28 "The mother of Sisera looked through the window, And cried out through the lattice, 'Why is his chariot so long in coming? Why tarries the clatter of his chariots?' シセラの母は窓からながめ、／格子窓から叫んで言った、／『どうして彼の車の来るのがおそいのか、／どうして彼の車の歩みがはかどらないのか』。
5 29 Her wisest ladies answered her, Yes, she answered herself, その侍女たちの賢い者は答え、／母またみずからおのれに答えて言った、
5 30 'Are they not finding and dividing the spoil: To every man a girl or two; For Sisera, plunder of dyed garments, Plunder of garments embroidered and dyed, Two pieces of dyed embroidery for the neck of the looter?' 『彼らは獲物を得て、／それを分けているのではないか、／人ごとにひとり、ふたりのおなごを取り、／シセラの獲物は色染めの衣、／縫い取りした色染めの衣の獲物であろう。すなわち縫い取りした色染めの衣二つを、／獲物としてそのくびにまとうであろう』。
5 31 "Thus let all Your enemies perish, O Lord! But let those who love Him be like the sun When it comes out in full strength." So the land had rest for forty years. 主よ、あなたの敵はみなこのように滅び、／あなたを愛する者を／太陽の勢いよく上るようにしてください」。こうして後、国は四十年のあいだ太平であった。

6 1 Then the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord. So the Lord delivered them into the hand of Midian for seven years, イスラエルの人々はまた主の前に悪をおこなったので、主は彼らを七年の間ミデアンびとの手にわたされた。

6 4 Then they would encamp against them and destroy the produce of the earth as far as Gaza, and leave no sustenance for Israel, neither sheep nor ox nor donkey. イスラエルびとに向かって陣を取り、地の産物を荒してガザの附近にまで及び、イスラエルのうちに命をつなぐべき物を残さず、羊も牛もろばも残さなかった。
6 5 For they would come up with their livestock and their tents, coming in as numerous as locusts; both they and their camels were without number; and they would enter the land to destroy it. 彼らが家畜と天幕を携えて、いなごのように多く上ってきたからである。すなわち彼らとそのらくだは無数であって、彼らは国を荒すためにはいってきたのであった。
6 6 So Israel was greatly impoverished because of the Midianites, and the children of Israel cried out to the Lord. こうしてイスラエルはミデアンびとのために非常に衰え、イスラエルの人々は主に呼ばわった。
6 7 And it came to pass, when the children of Israel cried out to the Lord because of the Midianites, イスラエルの人々がミデアンびとのゆえに、主に呼ばわったとき、
6 8 that the Lord sent a prophet to the children of Israel, who said to them, "Thus says the Lord God of Israel: 'I brought you up from Egypt and brought you out of the house of bondage; 主はひとりの預言者をイスラエルの人々につかわして彼らに言われた、「イスラエルの神、主はこう言われる、『わたしはかつてあなたがたをエジプトから導き上り、あなたがたを奴隷の家から携え出し、

6 19 So Gideon went in and prepared a young goat, and unleavened bread from an ephah of flour. The meat he put in a basket, and he put the broth in a pot; and he brought them out to Him under the terebinth tree and presented them. そこでギデオンは自分の家に行って、やぎの子を整え、一エパの粉で種入れぬパンをつくり、肉をかごに入れ、あつものをつぼに盛り、テレビンの木の下におる彼のもとに持ってきて、それを供えた。
6 20 The Angel of God said to him, "Take the meat and the unleavened bread and lay them on this rock, and pour out the broth." And he did so. 神の使は彼に言った、「肉と種入れぬパンをとって、この岩の上に置き、それにあつものを注ぎなさい」。彼はそのようにした。
6 21 Then the Angel of the Lord put out the end of the staff that was in His hand, and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire rose out of the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. And the Angel of the Lord departed out of his sight. すると主の使が手にもっていたつえの先を出して、肉と種入れぬパンに触れると、岩から火が燃えあがって、肉と種入れぬパンとを焼きつくした。そして主の使は去って見えなくなった。
6 22 Now Gideon perceived that He was the Angel of the Lord. So Gideon said, "Alas, O Lord God! For I have seen the Angel of the Lord face to face." ギデオンはその人が主の使であったことをさとって言った、「ああ主なる神よ、どうなることでしょう。わたしは顔をあわせて主の使を見たのですから」。
6 23 Then the Lord said to him, "Peace be with you; do not fear, you shall not die." 主は彼に言われた、「安心せよ、恐れるな。あなたは死ぬことはない」。

6 27 So Gideon took ten men from among his servants and did as the Lord had said to him. But because he feared his father's household and the men of the city too much to do it by day, he did it by night. ギデオンはしもべ十人を連れて、主が言われたとおりにおこなった。ただし彼は父の家族のもの、および町の人々を恐れたので、昼それを行うことができず、夜それを行った。

6 29 So they said to one another, "Who has done this thing?" And when they had inquired and asked, they said, "Gideon the son of Joash has done this thing." そこで彼らは互に「これはだれのしわざか」と言って問い尋ねたすえ、「これはヨアシの子ギデオンのしわざだ」と言った。

6 31 But Joash said to all who stood against him, "Would you plead for Baal? Would you save him? Let the one who would plead for him be put to death by morning! 6 34 But the Spirit of the Lord came upon Gideon; then he blew the trumpet, and the Abiezrites gathered behind him. 主の霊がギデオンに臨み、ギデオンがラッパを吹いたので、アビエゼルびとは集まって彼に従った。

7 1 Then Jerubbaal (that is, Gideon) and all the people who were with him rose early and encamped beside the well of Harod, so that the camp of the Midianites was on the north side of them by the hill of Moreh in the valley. さてエルバアルと呼ばれるギデオンおよび彼と共にいたすべての民は朝早く起き、ハロデの泉のほとりに陣を取った。ミデアンびとの陣は彼らの北の方にあり、モレの丘に沿って谷の中にあった。

7 4 But the Lord said to Gideon, "The people are still too many; bring them down to the water, and I will test them for you there. 7 5 So he brought the people down to the water. And the Lord said to Gideon, "Everyone who laps from the water with his tongue, as a dog laps, you shall set apart by himself; likewise everyone who gets down on his knees to drink." そこでギデオンが民を導いて水ぎわに下ると、主は彼に言われた、「すべて犬のなめるように舌をもって水をなめる者はそれを別にしておきなさい。またすべてひざを折り、かがんで水を飲む者もそうしなさい」。
7 6 And the number of those who lapped, putting their hand to their mouth, was three hundred men; but all the rest of the people got down on their knees to drink water. そして手を口にあてて水をなめた者の数は三百人であった。残りの民はみなひざを折り、かがんで水を飲んだ。
7 7 Then the Lord said to Gideon, "By the three hundred men who lapped I will save you, and deliver the Midianites into your hand. Let all the other people go, every man to his place." 主はギデオンに言われた、「わたしは水をなめた三百人の者をもって、あなたがたを救い、ミデアンびとをあなたの手にわたそう。残りの民はおのおのその家に帰らせなさい」。
7 8 So the people took provisions and their trumpets in their hands. And he sent away all the rest of Israel, every man to his tent, and retained those three hundred men. Now the camp of Midian was below him in the valley. そこで彼はかの三百人を留めおき、残りのイスラエルびとの手から、つぼとラッパを取り、民をおのおのその天幕に帰らせた。時にミデアンびとの陣は下の谷の中にあった。
7 9 It happened on the same night that the Lord said to him, "Arise, go down against the camp, for I have delivered it into your hand. その夜、主はギデオンに言われた、「立てよ、下っていって敵陣に攻め入れ。わたしはそれをあなたの手にわたす。
7 10 But if you are afraid to go down, go down to the camp with Purah your servant, もしあなたが下って行くことを恐れるならば、あなたのしもべプラと共に敵陣に下っていって、

7 13 And when Gideon had come, there was a man telling a dream to his companion. He said, "I have had a dream: To my surprise, a loaf of barley bread tumbled into the camp of Midian; it came to a tent and struck it so that it fell and overturned, and the tent collapsed." ギデオンがそこへ行ったとき、ある人がその仲間に夢を語っていた。その人は言った、「わたしは夢を見た。大麦のパン一つがミデアンの陣中にころがってきて、天幕に達し、それを打ち倒し、くつがえしたので、天幕は倒れ伏した」。
7 14 Then his companion answered and said, "This is nothing else but the sword of Gideon the son of Joash, a man of Israel! Into his hand God has delivered Midian and the whole camp." 仲間は答えて言った、「それはイスラエルの人、ヨアシの子ギデオンのつるぎにちがいない。神はミデアンとすべての軍勢を彼の手にわたされるのだ」。
7 15And so it was, when Gideon heard the telling of the dream and its interpretation, that he worshiped. He returned to the camp of Israel, and said, "Arise, for the Lord has delivered the camp of Midian into your hand." ギデオンは夢の物語とその解き明かしとを聞いたので、礼拝し、イスラエルの陣営に帰り、そして言った、「立てよ、主はミデアンの軍勢をあなたがたの手にわたされる」。

7 18 When I blow the trumpet, I and all who are with me, then you also blow the trumpets on every side of the whole camp, and say, 'The sword of the Lord and of Gideon!' " わたしと共におる者がみなラッパを吹くと、あなたがたもまたすべての陣営の四方でラッパを吹き、『主のためだ、ギデオンのためだ』と言いなさい」。
7 19 So Gideon and the hundred men who were with him came to the outpost of the camp at the beginning of the middle watch, just as they had posted the watch; and they blew the trumpets and broke the pitchers that were in their hands. こうしてギデオンと、彼と共にいた百人の者が、中更の初めに敵陣のはずれに行ってみると、ちょうど番兵を交代した時であったので、彼らはラッパを吹き、手に携えていたつぼを打ち砕いた。

7 22 When the three hundred blew the trumpets, the Lord set every man's sword against his companion throughout the whole camp; and the army fled to Beth Acacia, toward Zererah, as far as the border of Abel Meholah, by Tabbath. 三百人のものがラッパを吹くと、主は敵軍をしてみな互に同志打ちさせられたので、敵軍はゼレラの方、ベテシッタおよびアベルメホラの境、タバテの近くまで逃げ去った。
7 23 And the men of Israel gathered together from Naphtali, Asher, and all Manasseh, and pursued the Midianites. イスラエルの人々はナフタリ、アセルおよび全マナセから集まってきて、ミデアンびとを追撃した。
7 24 Then Gideon sent messengers throughout all the mountains of Ephraim, saying, "Come down against the Midianites, and seize from them the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan." Then all the men of Ephraim gathered together and seized the watering places as far as Beth Barah and the Jordan. ギデオンは使者をあまねくエフライムの山地につかわし、「下ってきて、ミデアンびとを攻め、ベタバラに至るまでの流れを取り、またヨルダンをも取れ」と言わせた。そこでエフライムの人々はみな集まってきて、ベタバラに至るまでの流れを取り、またヨルダンをも取った。
7 25 And they captured two princes of the Midianites, Oreb and Zeeb. They killed Oreb at the rock of Oreb, and Zeeb they killed at the winepress of Zeeb. 8 2 So he said to them, "What have I done now in comparison with you? Is not the gleaning of the grapes of Ephraim better than the vintage of Abiezer? ギデオンは彼らに言った、「今わたしのした事は、あなたがたのした事と比べものになりましょうか。エフライムの拾い集めた取り残りのぶどうはアビエゼルの収穫したぶどうにもまさるではありませんか。
8 3 God has delivered into your hands the princes of Midian, Oreb and Zeeb. And what was I able to do in comparison with you?" Then their anger toward him subsided when he said that. 神はミデアンの君オレブとゼエブをあなたがたの手にわたされました。わたしのなし得た事は、あなたがたのした事と比べものになりましょうか」。ギデオンがこの言葉を述べると、彼らの憤りは解けた。

8 7 So Gideon said, "For this cause, when the Lord has delivered Zebah and Zalmunna into my hand, then I will tear your flesh with the thorns of the wilderness and with briers!" ギデオンは言った、「それならば主がわたしの手にゼバとザルムンナをわたされるとき、わたしは野のいばらと、おどろをもって、あなたがたの肉を打つであろう」。
8 8 Then he went up from there to Penuel and spoke to them in the same way. And the men of Penuel answered him as the men of Succoth had answered. そしてギデオンはそこからペヌエルに上り、同じことをペヌエルの人々に述べると、彼らもスコテの人々が答えたように答えたので、

8 10 Now Zebah and Zalmunna were at Karkor, and their armies with them, about fifteen thousand, all who were left of all the army of the people of the East; for one hundred and twenty thousand men who drew the sword had fallen. さてゼバとザルムンナは軍勢おおよそ一万五千人を率いて、カルコルにいた。これは皆、東方の民の全軍のうち生き残ったもので、戦死した者は、つるぎを帯びているものが十二万人あった。
8 11 Then Gideon went up by the road of those who dwell in tents on the east of Nobah and Jogbehah; and he attacked the army while the camp felt secure. ギデオンはノバとヨグベハの東の隊商の道を上って、敵軍の油断しているところを撃った。
8 12When Zebah and Zalmunna fled, he pursued them; and he took the two kings of Midian, Zebah and Zalmunna, and routed the whole army. ゼバとザルムンナは逃げたが、ギデオンは追撃して、ミデアンのふたりの王ゼバとザルムンナを捕え、その軍勢をことごとく撃ち敗った。
8 13 Then Gideon the son of Joash returned from battle, from the Ascent of Heres. こうしてヨアシの子ギデオンはヘレスの坂をとおって戦いから帰り、
8 14 And he caught a young man of the men of Succoth and interrogated him; and he wrote down for him the leaders of Succoth and its elders, seventy-seven men. スコテの若者ひとりを捕えて、尋ねたところ、彼はスコテのつかさたち及び長老たち七十七人の名をギデオンのために書きしるした。
8 15 Then he came to the men of Succoth and said, "Here are Zebah and Zalmunna, about whom you ridiculed me, saying, 'Are the hands of Zebah and Zalmunna now in your hand, that we should give bread to your weary men?' " ギデオンはスコテの人々のところへ行って言った、「あなたがたがかつて『ゼバとザルムンナはすでにあなたの手のうちにあるのか。われわれはどうしてあなたの疲れた人々にパンを与えねばならないのか』と言って、わたしをののしったそのゼバとザルムンナを見なさい」。
8 16 And he took the elders of the city, and thorns of the wilderness and briers, and with them he taught the men of Succoth. そして彼は、その町の長老たちを捕え、野のいばらと、おどろとを取り、それをもってスコテの人々を懲らし、
8 17 Then he tore down the tower of Penuel and killed the men of the city. またペヌエルのやぐらを打ちこわして町の人々を殺した。
8 18 And he said to Zebah and Zalmunna, "What kind of men were they whom you killed at Tabor?" So they answered, "As you are, so were they; each one resembled the son of a king." そしてギデオンはゼバとザルムンナに言った、「あなたがたがタボルで殺したのは、どんな人々であったか」。彼らは答えた、「彼らはあなたに似てみな王子のように見えました」。
8 19 Then he said, "They were my brothers, the sons of my mother. As the Lord lives, if you had let them live, I would not kill you." ギデオンは言った、「彼らはわたしの兄弟、わたしの母の子たちだ。主は生きておられる。もしあなたがたが彼らを生かしておいたならば、わたしはあなたがたを殺さないのだが」。
8 20 And he said to Jether his firstborn, "Rise, kill them!" But the youth would not draw his sword; for he was afraid, because he was still a youth. そして長子エテルに言った、「立って、彼らを殺しなさい」。しかしその若者はなお年が若かったので、恐れてつるぎを抜かなかった。
8 21 So Zebah and Zalmunna said, "Rise yourself, and kill us; for as a man is, so is his strength." So Gideon arose and killed Zebah and Zalmunna, and took the crescent ornaments that were on their camels' necks. そこでゼバとザルムンナは言った、「あなた自身が立って、わたしたちを撃ってください。人によってそれぞれ力も違いますから」。ギデオンは立ちあがってゼバとザルムンナを殺し、彼らのらくだの首に掛けてあった月形の飾りを取った。
8 22 Then the men of Israel said to Gideon, "Rule over us, both you and your son, and your grandson also; for you have delivered us from the hand of Midian." イスラエルの人々はギデオンに言った、「あなたはミデアンの手からわれわれを救われたのですから、あなたも、あなたの子も孫もわれわれを治めてください」。
8 23 But Gideon said to them, "I will not rule over you, nor shall my son rule over you; the Lord shall rule over you." ギデオンは彼らに言った、「わたしはあなたがたを治めることはいたしません。またわたしの子もあなたがたを治めてはなりません。主があなたがたを治められます」。
8 24Then Gideon said to them, "I would like to make a request of you, that each of you would give me the earrings from his plunder." For they had gold earrings, because they were Ishmaelites. ギデオンはまた彼らに言った、「わたしはあなたがたに一つの願いがあります。あなたがたのぶんどった耳輪をめいめいわたしにください」。ミデアンびとはイシマエルびとであったゆえに、金の耳輪を持っていたからである。

8 26 Now the weight of the gold earrings that he requested was one thousand seven hundred shekels of gold, besides the crescent ornaments, pendants, and purple robes which were on the kings of Midian, and besides the chains that were around their camels' necks. こうしてギデオンが求めて得た金の耳輪の重さは一千七百金シケルであった。ほかに月形の飾りと耳飾りと、ミデアンの王たちの着た紫の衣およびらくだの首に掛けた首飾りなどもあった。
8 27 Then Gideon made it into an ephod and set it up in his city, Ophrah. And all Israel played the harlot with it there. It became a snare to Gideon and to his house. ギデオンはそれをもって一つのエポデを作り、それを自分の町オフラに置いた。イスラエルは皆それを慕って姦淫をおこなった。それはギデオンとその家にとって、わなとなった。
8 28 Thus Midian was subdued before the children of Israel, so that they lifted their heads no more. And the country was quiet for forty years in the days of Gideon. このようにしてミデアンはイスラエルの人々に征服されて、再びその頭をあげることができなかった。そして国はギデオンの世にあるうち、四十年のあいだ太平であった。
8 29 Then Jerubbaal the son of Joash went and dwelt in his own house. ヨアシの子エルバアルは行って自分の家に住んだ。
8 30 Gideon had seventy sons who were his own offspring, for he had many wives. ギデオンは多くの妻をもっていたので、自分の子供だけで七十人あった。
8 31 And his concubine who was in Shechem also bore him a son, whose name he called Abimelech. シケムにいた彼のめかけがまたひとりの子を産んだので、アビメレクと名づけた。
8 32 Now Gideon the son of Joash died at a good old age, and was buried in the tomb of Joash his father, in Ophrah of the Abiezrites. ヨアシの子ギデオンは高齢に達して死に、アビエゼルびとのオフラにある父ヨアシの墓に葬られた。
8 33 So it was, as soon as Gideon was dead, that the children of Israel again played the harlot with the Baals, and made Baal-Berith their god. ギデオンが死ぬと、イスラエルの人々はまたバアルを慕って、これと姦淫を行い、バアル・ベリテを自分たちの神とした。

9 1 Then Abimelech the son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem, to his mother's brothers, and spoke with them and with all the family of the house of his mother's father, saying, さてエルバアルの子アビメレクはシケムに行き、母の身内の人たちのもとに行って、彼らと母の父の家の一族とに言った、

9 5 Then he went to his father's house at Ophrah and killed his brothers, the seventy sons of Jerubbaal, on one stone. But Jotham the youngest son of Jerubbaal was left, because he hid himself. オフラにある父の家に行って、エルバアルの子で、自分の兄弟である七十人を、一つの石の上で殺した。ただしエルバアルの末の子ヨタムは身を隠したので生き残った。

9 9 But the olive tree said to them, 'Should I cease giving my oil, With which they honor God and men, And go to sway over trees?' しかしオリブの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうして神と人とをあがめるために用いられるわたしの油を捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。
9 10 "Then the trees said to the fig tree, 'You come and reign over us!' もろもろの木はまたいちじくの木に言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。
9 11But the fig tree said to them, 'Should I cease my sweetness and my good fruit, And go to sway over trees?' しかしいちじくの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうしてわたしの甘味と、わたしの良い果実とを捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。
9 12 "Then the trees said to the vine, 'You come and reign over us!' もろもろの木はまたぶどうの木に言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。
9 13But the vine said to them, 'Should I cease my new wine, Which cheers both God and men, And go to sway over trees?' しかし、ぶどうの木は彼らに言った、『わたしはどうして神と人とを喜ばせるわたしのぶどう酒を捨てて行って、もろもろの木を治めることができましょう』。
9 14 "Then all the trees said to the bramble, 'You come and reign over us!' そこですべての木はいばらに言った、『きてわたしたちの王になってください』。
9 15 And the bramble said to the trees, 'If in truth you anoint me as king over you, Then come and take shelter in my shade; But if not, let fire come out of the bramble And devour the cedars of Lebanon!' いばらはもろもろの木に言った、『あなたがたが真実にわたしを立てて王にするならば、きてわたしの陰に難を避けなさい。そうしなければ、いばらから火が出てレバノンの香柏を焼きつくすでしょう』。
9 16 "Now therefore, if you have acted in truth and sincerity in making Abimelech king, and if you have dealt well with Jerubbaal and his house, and have done to him as he deserves-- あなたがたがアビメレクを立てて王にしたことは、真実と敬意とをもってしたものですか。あなたがたはエルバアルとその家をよく扱い、彼のおこないに応じてしたのですか。
9 17 for my father fought for you, risked his life, and delivered you out of the hand of Midian; わたしの父はあなたがたのために戦い、自分の命を投げ出して、あなたがたをミデアンの手から救い出したのに、

9 22 After Abimelech had reigned over Israel three years, アビメレクは三年の間イスラエルを治めたが、
9 23 God sent a spirit of ill will between Abimelech and the men of Shechem; and the men of Shechem dealt treacherously with Abimelech, 神はアビメレクとシケムの人々の間に悪霊をおくられたので、シケムの人々はアビメレクを欺くようになった。

9 28 Then Gaal the son of Ebed said, "Who is Abimelech, and who is Shechem, that we should serve him? Is he not the son of Jerubbaal, and is not Zebul his officer? 9 29 If only this people were under my authority! Then I would remove Abimelech." So he said to Abimelech, "Increase your army and come out!" ああ、この民がわたしの手の下にあったらよいのだが。そうすればわたしはアビメレクをやめさせ、アビメレクに向かって『おまえの軍勢を増して出てこい』と言うであろう」。
9 30 When Zebul, the ruler of the city, heard the words of Gaal the son of Ebed, his anger was aroused. 町のつかさゼブルはエベデの子ガアルの言葉を聞いて怒りを発し、
9 31 And he sent messengers to Abimelech secretly, saying, "Take note! Gaal the son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem; and here they are, fortifying the city against you. 使者をアルマにおるアビメレクにつかわして言わせた、「エベデの子ガアルとその身内の人々がシケムにきて、町を騒がせ、あなたにそむかせようとしています。
9 32Now therefore, get up by night, you and the people who are with you, and lie in wait in the field. それであなたと、あなたと共におる人々が夜のうちに行って、野に身を伏せ、
9 33 And it shall be, as soon as the sun is up in the morning, that you shall rise early and rush upon the city; and when he and the people who are with him come out against you, you may then do to them as you find opportunity." 朝になって、日ののぼるとき、早く起き出て町を襲うならば、ガアルと、彼と共におる民は出てきて、あなたに抵抗するでしょう。その時あなたは機を得て、彼らを撃つことができるでしょう」。
9 34 So Abimelech and all the people who were with him rose by night, and lay in wait against Shechem in four companies. アビメレクと、彼と共にいたすべての民は夜のうちに起き出て、四組に分れ、身を伏せてシケムをうかがった。
9 35 When Gaal the son of Ebed went out and stood in the entrance to the city gate, Abimelech and the people who were with him rose from lying in wait. エベデの子ガアルが出て、町の門の入口に立ったとき、アビメレクと、彼と共にいた民が身を伏せていたところから立ちあがったので、
9 36 And when Gaal saw the people, he said to Zebul, "Look, people are coming down from the tops of the mountains!" But Zebul said to him, "You see the shadows of the mountains as if they were men." ガアルは民を見てゼブルに言った、「ごらんなさい。民が山々の頂からおりてきます」。ゼブルは彼に言った、「あなたは山々の影を人のように見るのです」。

9 38 Then Zebul said to him, "Where indeed is your mouth now, with which you said, 'Who is Abimelech, that we should serve him?' Are not these the people whom you despised? 9 40 And Abimelech chased him, and he fled from him; and many fell wounded, to the very entrance of the gate. アビメレクは彼を追ったので、ガアルは彼の前から逃げた。そして傷つき倒れる者が多く、門の入口にまで及んだ。

9 44 Then Abimelech and the company that was with him rushed forward and stood at the entrance of the gate of the city; and the other two companies rushed upon all who were in the fields and killed them. アビメレクと、彼と共にいた組の者は襲って行って、町の門の入口に立ち、他の二組は野にいたすべてのものを襲って、それを殺した。

9 48 Then Abimelech went up to Mount Zalmon, he and all the people who were with him. And Abimelech took an ax in his hand and cut down a bough from the trees, and took it and laid it on his shoulder; then he said to the people who were with him, "What you have seen me do, make haste and do as I have done." アビメレクは自分と一緒にいた民をことごとく率いてザルモン山にのぼり、アビメレクは手におのを取って、木の枝を切り落し、それを取りあげて自分の肩にのせ、一緒にいた民にむかって言った、「あなたがたはわたしがしたことを見たとおりに急いでしなさい」。
9 49 So each of the people likewise cut down his own bough and followed Abimelech, put them against the stronghold, and set the stronghold on fire above them, so that all the people of the tower of Shechem died, about a thousand men and women. そこで民もまた皆おのおのその枝を切り落し、アビメレクに従って行って、枝を塔によせかけ、塔に火をつけて彼らを攻めた。こうしてシケムのやぐらの人々もまたことごとく死んだ。男女おおよそ一千人であった。
9 50 Then Abimelech went to Thebez, and he encamped against Thebez and took it. ついでアビメレクはテベツに行き、テベツに向かって陣を張り、これを攻め取ったが、
9 51 But there was a strong tower in the city, and all the men and women--all the people of the city--fled there and shut themselves in; then they went up to the top of the tower. 町の中に一つの堅固なやぐらがあって、すべての男女すなわち町の人々が皆そこに逃げ込み、あとを閉ざして、やぐらの屋根に上ったので、
9 52 So Abimelech came as far as the tower and fought against it; and he drew near the door of the tower to burn it with fire. アビメレクはやぐらのもとに押し寄せてこれを攻め、やぐらの入口に近づいて、火をつけて焼こうとしたとき、
9 53 But a certain woman dropped an upper millstone on Abimelech's head and crushed his skull. ひとりの女がアビメレクの頭に、うすの上石を投げて、その頭骸骨を砕いた。
9 54 Then he called quickly to the young man, his armorbearer, and said to him, "Draw your sword and kill me, lest men say of me, 'A woman killed him.' " So his young man thrust him through, and he died. アビメレクは自分の武器を持つ若者を急ぎ呼んで言った、「つるぎを抜いてわたしを殺せ。さもないと人々はわたしを、女に殺されたのだと言うであろう」。その若者が彼を刺し通したので彼は死んだ。

9 56 Thus God repaid the wickedness of Abimelech, which he had done to his father by killing his seventy brothers. このように神はアビメレクがその兄弟七十人を殺して、自分の父に対して犯した悪に報いられた。

10 12 Also the Sidonians and Amalekites and Maonites oppressed you; and you cried out to Me, and I delivered you from their hand. またシドンびと、アマレクびとおよびマオンびとがあなたがたをしえたげた時、わたしに呼ばわったので、あなたがたを彼らの手から救い出した。
10 13 Yet you have forsaken Me and served other gods. Therefore I will deliver you no more. しかしあなたがたはわたしを捨てて、ほかの神々に仕えた。それゆえ、わたしはかさねてあなたがたを救わないであろう。
10 14 Go and cry out to the gods which you have chosen; let them deliver you in your time of distress." あなたがたが選んだ神々に行って呼ばわり、あなたがたの悩みの時、彼らにあなたがたを救わせるがよい」。
10 15 And the children of Israel said to the Lord, "We have sinned! Do to us whatever seems best to You; only deliver us this day, we pray." イスラエルの人々は主に言った、「わたしたちは罪を犯しました。なんでもあなたが良いと思われることをしてください。ただどうぞ、きょう、わたしたちを救ってください」。

11 1 Now Jephthah the Gileadite was a mighty man of valor, but he was the son of a harlot; and Gilead begot Jephthah. さてギレアデびとエフタは強い勇士であったが遊女の子で、エフタの父はギレアデであった。
11 2 Gilead's wife bore sons; and when his wife's sons grew up, they drove Jephthah out, and said to him, "You shall have no inheritance in our father's house, for you are the son of another woman." ギレアデの妻も子供を産んだが、その妻の子供たちが成長したとき、彼らはエフタを追い出して彼に言った、「あなたはほかの女の産んだ子だから、わたしたちの父の家を継ぐことはできません」。

11 8 And the elders of Gilead said to Jephthah, "That is why we have turned again to you now, that you may go with us and fight against the people of Ammon, and be our head over all the inhabitants of Gilead." ギレアデの長老たちはエフタに言った、「それでわたしたちは今、あなたに帰ったのです。どうぞ、わたしたちと一緒に行って、アンモンの人々と戦ってください。そしてわたしたちとギレアデに住んでいるすべてのものとのかしらになってください」。

11 11 Then Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them; and Jephthah spoke all his words before the Lord in Mizpah. そこでエフタはギレアデの長老たちと一緒に行った。民は彼を立てて自分たちのかしらとし、大将とした。それでエフタはミヅパで、自分の言葉をことごとく主の前に述べた。
11 12 Now Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, saying, "What do you have against me, that you have come to fight against me in my land?" かくてエフタはアンモンの人々の王に使者をつかわして言った、「あなたはわたしとなんのかかわりがあって、わたしのところへ攻めてきて、わたしの国と戦おうとするのですか」。
11 13 And the king of the people of Ammon answered the messengers of Jephthah, "Because Israel took away my land when they came up out of Egypt, from the Arnon as far as the Jabbok, and to the Jordan. Now therefore, restore those lands peaceably." アンモンの人々の王はエフタの使者に答えた、「昔、イスラエルがエジプトから上ってきたとき、アルノンからヤボクに及び、またヨルダンに及ぶわたしの国を奪い取ったからです。それゆえ今、穏やかにそれを返しなさい」。
11 14 So Jephthah again sent messengers to the king of the people of Ammon, エフタはまた使者をアンモンの人々の王につかわして、
11 15 and said to him, "Thus says Jephthah: 'Israel did not take away the land of Moab, nor the land of the people of Ammon; 言わせた、「エフタはこう申します、『イスラエルはモアブの地も、またアンモンの人々の地も取りませんでした。
11 16 for when Israel came up from Egypt, they walked through the wilderness as far as the Red Sea and came to Kadesh. イスラエルはエジプトから上ってきたとき、荒野をとおって紅海にいたり、カデシにきました。
11 17 Then Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, "Please let me pass through your land." But the king of Edom would not heed. And in like manner they sent to the king of Moab, but he would not consent. 11 18 And they went along through the wilderness and bypassed the land of Edom and the land of Moab, came to the east side of the land of Moab, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon. But they did not enter the border of Moab, for the Arnon was the border of Moab. それから荒野をとおって、エドムの地とモアブの地を回り、モアブの地の東部に達し、アルノンの向こうに宿営しましたがモアブの領域には、はいりませんでした。アルノンはモアブの境だからです。
11 19 Then Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, king of Heshbon; and Israel said to him, "Please let us pass through your land into our place." 次にイスラエルはヘシボンの王すなわちアモリびとの王シホンに使者をつかわし、シホンに向かって「どうぞ、われわれにあなたの国をとおって、われわれの目的地へ行かせてください」と言わせました。
11 20 But Sihon did not trust Israel to pass through his territory. So Sihon gathered all his people together, encamped in Jahaz, and fought against Israel. ところがシホンはイスラエルを信ぜず、その領域を通らせないばかりか、かえってすべての民を集めてヤハヅに陣を取り、イスラエルと戦いましたが、
11 21 And the Lord God of Israel delivered Sihon and all his people into the hand of Israel, and they defeated them. Thus Israel gained possession of all the land of the Amorites, who inhabited that country. イスラエルの神、主はシホンとそのすべての民をイスラエルの手にわたされたので、イスラエルは彼らを撃ち破って、その土地に住んでいたアモリびとの地をことごとく占領し、
11 22 They took possession of all the territory of the Amorites, from the Arnon to the Jabbok and from the wilderness to the Jordan. アルノンからヤボクまでと、荒野からヨルダンまで、アモリびとの領域をことごとく占領しました。
11 23 And now the Lord God of Israel has dispossessed the Amorites from before His people Israel; should you then possess it? このようにイスラエルの神、主はその民イスラエルの前からアモリびとを追い払われたのに、あなたはそれを取ろうとするのですか。
11 24 Will you not possess whatever Chemosh your god gives you to possess? So whatever the Lord our God takes possession of before us, we will possess. あなたは、あなたの神ケモシがあなたに取らせるものを取らないのですか。われわれはわれわれの神、主がわれわれの前から追い払われたものの土地を取るのです。
11 25 And now, are you any better than Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab? Did he ever strive against Israel? Did he ever fight against them? あなたはモアブの王チッポルの子バラクにまさる者ですか。バラクはかつてイスラエルと争ったことがありますか。かつて彼らと戦ったことがありますか。
11 26 While Israel dwelt in Heshbon and its villages, in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities along the banks of the Arnon, for three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time? イスラエルはヘシボンとその村里に住み、またアロエルとその村里およびアルノンの岸に沿うすべての町々に住むこと三百年になりますが、あなたがたはどうしてその間にそれを取りもどさなかったのですか。
11 27 Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you wronged me by fighting against me. May the Lord, the Judge, render judgment this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon.' 11 28 However, the king of the people of Ammon did not heed the words which Jephthah sent him. しかしアンモンの人々の王はエフタが言いつかわした言葉をききいれなかった。
11 29 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jephthah, and he passed through Gilead and Manasseh, and passed through Mizpah of Gilead; and from Mizpah of Gilead he advanced toward the people of Ammon. 時に主の霊がエフタに臨み、エフタはギレアデおよびマナセをとおって、ギレアデのミヅパに行き、ギレアデのミヅパから進んでアンモンの人々のところに行った。
11 30 And Jephthah made a vow to the Lord, and said, "If You will indeed deliver the people of Ammon into my hands, エフタは主に誓願を立てて言った、「もしあなたがアンモンの人々をわたしの手にわたされるならば、
11 31 then it will be that whatever comes out of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the people of Ammon, shall surely be the Lord's, and I will offer it up as a burnt offering." わたしがアンモンの人々に勝って帰るときに、わたしの家の戸口から出てきて、わたしを迎えるものはだれでも主のものとし、その者を燔祭としてささげましょう」。
11 32 So Jephthah advanced toward the people of Ammon to fight against them, and the Lord delivered them into his hands. エフタはアンモンの人々のところに進んで行って、彼らと戦ったが、主は彼らをエフタの手にわたされたので、
11 33And he defeated them from Aroer as far as Minnith--twenty cities--and to Abel Keramim, with a very great slaughter. Thus the people of Ammon were subdued before the children of Israel. アロエルからミンニテの附近まで、二十の町を撃ち敗り、アベル・ケラミムに至るまで、非常に多くの人を殺した。こうしてアンモンの人々はイスラエルの人々の前に攻め伏せられた。
11 34 When Jephthah came to his house at Mizpah, there was his daughter, coming out to meet him with timbrels and dancing; and she was his only child. Besides her he had neither son nor daughter. やがてエフタはミヅパに帰り、自分の家に来ると、彼の娘が鼓をもち、舞い踊って彼を出迎えた。彼女はエフタのひとり子で、ほかに男子も女子もなかった。
11 35 And it came to pass, when he saw her, that he tore his clothes, and said, "Alas, my daughter! You have brought me very low! You are among those who trouble me! For I have given my word to the Lord, and I cannot go back on it." エフタは彼女を見ると、衣を裂いて言った、「ああ、娘よ、あなたは全くわたしを打ちのめした。わたしを悩ますものとなった。わたしが主に誓ったのだから改めることはできないのだ」。
11 36 So she said to him, "My father, if you have given your word to the Lord, do to me according to what has gone out of your mouth, because the Lord has avenged you of your enemies, the people of Ammon." 娘は言った、「父よ、あなたは主に誓われたのですから、主があなたのために、あなたの敵アンモンの人々に報復された今、あなたが言われたとおりにわたしにしてください」。
11 37 Then she said to her father, "Let this thing be done for me: let me alone for two months, that I may go and wander on the mountains and bewail my virginity, my friends and I." 娘はまた父に言った、「どうぞ、この事をわたしにさせてください。すなわち二か月の間わたしをゆるし、友だちと一緒に行って、山々をゆきめぐり、わたしの処女であることを嘆かせてください」。
11 38 So he said, "Go." And he sent her away for two months; and she went with her friends, and bewailed her virginity on the mountains. エフタは「行きなさい」と言って、彼女を二か月の間、出してやった。彼女は友だちと一緒に行って、山の上で自分の処女であることを嘆いたが、
11 39 And it was so at the end of two months that she returned to her father, and he carried out his vow with her which he had vowed. She knew no man. And it became a custom in Israel 二か月の後、父のもとに帰ってきたので、父は誓った誓願のとおりに彼女におこなった。彼女はついに男を知らなかった。

12 1 Then the men of Ephraim gathered together, crossed over toward Zaphon, and said to Jephthah, "Why did you cross over to fight against the people of Ammon, and did not call us to go with you? We will burn your house down on you with fire!" エフライムの人々は集まってザポンに行き、エフタに言った、「なぜあなたは進んで行ってアンモンの人々と戦いながら、われわれを招いて一緒に行かせませんでしたか。われわれはあなたの家に火をつけてあなたを一緒に焼いてしまいます」。
12 2 And Jephthah said to them, "My people and I were in a great struggle with the people of Ammon; and when I called you, you did not deliver me out of their hands. エフタは彼らに言った、「かつてわたしとわたしの民がアンモンの人々と大いに争ったとき、あなたがたを呼んだが、あなたがたはわたしを彼らの手から救ってくれませんでした。
12 3 So when I saw that you would not deliver me, I took my life in my hands and crossed over against the people of Ammon; and the Lord delivered them into my hand. Why then have you come up to me this day to fight against me?" あなたがたが救ってくれないのを見たから、わたしは命がけでアンモンの人々のところへ攻めて行きますと、主は彼らをわたしの手にわたされたのです。どうしてあなたがたは、きょう、わたしのところに上ってきて、わたしと戦おうとするのですか」。
12 4 Now Jephthah gathered together all the men of Gilead and fought against Ephraim. And the men of Gilead defeated Ephraim, because they said, "You Gileadites are fugitives of Ephraim among the Ephraimites and among the Manassites." そこでエフタはギレアデの人々をことごとく集めてエフライムと戦い、ギレアデの人々はエフライムを撃ち破った。これはエフライムが「ギレアデびとよ、あなたがたはエフライムとマナセのうちにいるエフライムの落人だ」と言ったからである。
12 5 The Gileadites seized the fords of the Jordan before the Ephraimites arrived. And when any Ephraimite who escaped said, "Let me cross over," the men of Gilead would say to him, "Are you an Ephraimite?" If he said, "No," そしてギレアデびとはエフライムに渡るヨルダンの渡し場を押えたので、エフライムの落人が「渡らせてください」と言うとき、ギレアデの人々は「あなたはエフライムびとですか」と問い、その人がもし「そうではありません」と言うならば、
12 6 then they would say to him, "Then say, 'Shibboleth'!" And he would say, "Sibboleth," for he could not pronounce it right. Then they would take him and kill him at the fords of the Jordan. 12 7 And Jephthah judged Israel six years. Then Jephthah the Gileadite died and was buried in among the cities of Gilead. エフタは六年の間イスラエルをさばいた。ギレアデびとエフタはついに死んで、ギレアデの自分の町に葬られた。
12 8 After him, Ibzan of Bethlehem judged Israel. 彼の後にベツレヘムのイブザンがイスラエルをさばいた。
12 9 He had thirty sons. And he gave away thirty daughters in marriage, and brought in thirty daughters from elsewhere for his sons. He judged Israel seven years. 彼に三十人のむすこがあった。また三十人の娘があったが、それを自分の氏族以外の者にとつがせ、むすこたちのためには三十人の娘をほかからめとった。彼は七年の間イスラエルをさばいた。

12 11 After him, Elon the Zebulunite judged Israel. He judged Israel ten years. 彼の後にゼブルンびとエロンがイスラエルをさばいた。彼は十年の間イスラエルをさばいた。
12 12 And Elon the Zebulunite died and was buried at Aijalon in the country of Zebulun. ゼブルンびとエロンはついに死んで、ゼブルンの地のアヤロンに葬られた。

13 1 Again the children of Israel did evil in the sight of the Lord, and the Lord delivered them into the hand of the Philistines for forty years. イスラエルの人々がまた主の前に悪を行ったので、主は彼らを四十年の間ペリシテびとの手にわたされた。
13 2 Now there was a certain man from Zorah, of the family of the Danites, whose name was Manoah; and his wife was barren and had no children. ここにダンびとの氏族の者で、名をマノアというゾラの人があった。その妻はうまずめで、子を産んだことがなかった。
13 3 And the Angel of the Lord appeared to the woman and said to her, "Indeed now, you are barren and have borne no children, but you shall conceive and bear a son. 主の使がその女に現れて言った、「あなたはうまずめで、子を産んだことがありません。しかし、あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。
13 4 Now therefore, please be careful not to drink wine or similar drink, and not to eat anything unclean. それであなたは気をつけて、ぶどう酒または濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。
13 5 For behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. And no razor shall come upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to deliver Israel out of the hand of the Philistines." あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。その頭にかみそりをあててはなりません。その子は生れた時から神にささげられたナジルびとです。彼はペリシテびとの手からイスラエルを救い始めるでしょう」。
13 6 So the woman came and told her husband, saying, "A Man of God came to me, and His countenance was like the countenance of the Angel of God, very awesome; but I did not ask Him where He was from, and He did not tell me His name. そこでその女はきて夫に言った、「神の人がわたしのところにきました。その顔かたちは神の使の顔かたちのようで、たいそう恐ろしゅうございました。わたしはその人が、どこからきたのか尋ねませんでしたが、その人もわたしに名を告げませんでした。
13 7 And He said to me, 'Behold, you shall conceive and bear a son. Now drink no wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean, for the child shall be a Nazirite to God from the womb to the day of his death.' " しかしその人はわたしに『あなたは身ごもって男の子を産むでしょう。それであなたはぶどう酒または濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。その子は生れた時から死ぬ日まで神にささげられたナジルびとです』と申しました」。
13 8 Then Manoah prayed to the Lord, and said, "O my Lord, please let the Man of God whom You sent come to us again and teach us what we shall do for the child who will be born." そこでマノアは主に願い求めて言った、「ああ、主よ、どうぞ、あなたがさきにつかわされた神の人をもう一度わたしたちに臨ませて、わたしたちがその生れる子になすべきことを教えさせてください」。
13 9 And God listened to the voice of Manoah, and the Angel of God came to the woman again as she was sitting in the field; but Manoah her husband was not with her. 神がマノアの願いを聞かれたので、神の使は女が畑に座していた時、ふたたび彼女に臨んだ。しかし夫マノアは一緒にいなかった。
13 10 Then the woman ran in haste and told her husband, and said to him, "Look, the Man who came to me the other day has just now appeared to me!" 女は急ぎ走って行って夫に言った、「さきごろ、わたしに臨まれた人がまたわたしに現れました」。
13 11 So Manoah arose and followed his wife. When he came to the Man, he said to Him, "Are You the Man who spoke to this woman?" And He said, "I am." マノアは立って妻のあとについて行き、その人のもとに行って言った、「あなたはかつてこの女にお告げになったおかたですか」。その人は言った、「そうです」。
13 12 Manoah said, "Now let Your words come to pass! What will be the boy's rule of life, and his work?" マノアは言った、「あなたの言われたことが事実となったとき、その子の育て方およびこれになすべき事はなんでしょうか」。
13 13 So the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "Of all that I said to the woman let her be careful. 主の使はマノアに言った、「わたしがさきに女に言ったことは皆、守らせなければなりません。
13 14 She may not eat anything that comes from the vine, nor may she drink wine or similar drink, nor eat anything unclean. All that I commanded her let her observe." すなわちぶどうの木から産するものはすべて食べてはなりません。またぶどう酒と濃い酒を飲んではなりません。またすべて汚れたものを食べてはなりません。わたしが彼女に命じたことは皆、守らせなければなりません」。
13 15 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, "Please let us detain You, and we will prepare a young goat for You." マノアは主の使に言った、「どうぞ、わたしたちに、あなたを引き留めさせ、あなたのために子やぎを備えさせてください」。
13 16 And the Angel of the Lord said to Manoah, "Though you detain Me, I will not eat your food. But if you offer a burnt offering, you must offer it to the Lord." (For Manoah did not know He was the Angel of the Lord.) 主の使はマノアに言った、「あなたがわたしを引き留めても、わたしはあなたの食物をたべません。しかしあなたが燔祭を備えようとなさるのであれば、主にそれをささげなさい」。マノアは彼が主の使であるのを知らなかったからである。
13 17 Then Manoah said to the Angel of the Lord, "What is Your name, that when Your words come to pass we may honor You?" マノアは主の使に言った、「あなたの名はなんといいますか。あなたの言われたことが事実となったとき、わたしたちはあなたをあがめましょう」。
13 18 And the Angel of the Lord said to him, "Why do you ask My name, seeing it is wonderful?" 主の使は彼に言った、「わたしの名は不思議です。どうしてあなたはそれをたずねるのですか」。
13 19 So Manoah took the young goat with the grain offering, and offered it upon the rock to the Lord. And He did a wondrous thing while Manoah and his wife looked on-- そこでマノアは子やぎと素祭とをとり、岩の上でそれを主にささげた。主は不思議なことをされ、マノアとその妻はそれを見た。
13 20 it happened as the flame went up toward heaven from the altar--the Angel of the Lord ascended in the flame of the altar! When Manoah and his wife saw this, they fell on their faces to the ground. すなわち炎が祭壇から天にあがったとき、主の使は祭壇の炎のうちにあってのぼった。マノアとその妻は見て、地にひれ伏した。
13 21 When the Angel of the Lord appeared no more to Manoah and his wife, then Manoah knew that He was the Angel of the Lord. 主の使はふたたびマノアとその妻に現れなかった。その時マノアは彼が主の使であることを知った。
13 22 And Manoah said to his wife, "We shall surely die, because we have seen God!" マノアは妻に向かって言った、「わたしたちは神を見たから、きっと死ぬであろう」。
13 23 But his wife said to him, "If the Lord had desired to kill us, He would not have accepted a burnt offering and a grain offering from our hands, nor would He have shown us all these things, nor would He have told us such things as these at this time." 妻は彼に言った、「主がもし、わたしたちを殺そうと思われたのならば、わたしたちの手から燔祭と素祭をおうけにならなかったでしょう。またこれらのすべての事をわたしたちにお示しになるはずはなく、また今わたしたちにこのような事をお告げにならなかったでしょう」。
13 24 So the woman bore a son and called his name Samson; and the child grew, and the Lord blessed him. やがて女は男の子を産んで、その名をサムソンと呼んだ。その子は成長し、主は彼を恵まれた。
13 25 And the Spirit of the Lord began to move upon him at Mahaneh Dan between Zorah and Eshtaol. 主の霊はゾラとエシタオルの間のマハネダンにおいて初めて彼を感動させた。
士師記 Judges 14 14
14 1 Now Samson went down to Timnah, and saw a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines. サムソンはテムナに下って行き、ペリシテびとの娘で、テムナに住むひとりの女を見た。
14 2 So he went up and told his father and mother, saying, "I have seen a woman in Timnah of the daughters of the Philistines; now therefore, get her for me as a wife." 彼は帰ってきて父母に言った、「わたしはペリシテびとの娘で、テムナに住むひとりの女を見ました。彼女をめとってわたしの妻にしてください」。
14 3 Then his father and mother said to him, "Is there no woman among the daughters of your brethren, or among all my people, that you must go and get a wife from the uncircumcised Philistines?" And Samson said to his father, "Get her for me, for she pleases me well." 父母は言った、「あなたが行って、割礼をうけないペリシテびとのうちから妻を迎えようとするのは、身内の娘たちのうちに、あるいはわたしたちのすべての民のうちに女がないためなのですか」。しかしサムソンは父に言った、「彼女をわたしにめとってください。彼女はわたしの心にかないますから」。
14 4 But his father and mother did not know that it was of the Lord--that He was seeking an occasion to move against the Philistines. For at that time the Philistines had dominion over Israel. 父母はこの事が主から出たものであることを知らなかった。サムソンはペリシテびとを攻めようと、おりをうかがっていたからである。そのころペリシテびとはイスラエルを治めていた。
14 5 So Samson went down to Timnah with his father and mother, and came to the vineyards of Timnah.Now to his surprise, a young lion came roaring against him. かくてサムソンは父母と共にテムナに下って行った。彼がテムナのぶどう畑に着くと、一頭の若いししがほえたけって彼に向かってきた。
14 6 And the Spirit of the Lord came mightily upon him, and he tore the lion apart as one would have torn apart a young goat, though he had nothing in his hand. But he did not tell his father or his mother what he had done. 時に主の霊が激しく彼に臨んだので、彼はあたかも子やぎを裂くようにそのししを裂いたが、手にはなんの武器も持っていなかった。しかしサムソンはそのしたことを父にも母にも告げなかった。
14 7 Then he went down and talked with the woman; and she pleased Samson well. サムソンは下って行って女と話し合ったが、女はサムソンの心にかなった。
14 8 After some time, when he returned to get her, he turned aside to see the carcass of the lion. And behold, a swarm of bees and honey were in the carcass of the lion. 日がたって後、サムソンは彼女をめとろうとして帰ったが、道を転じて、かのししのしかばねを見ると、ししのからだに、はちの群れと、蜜があった。
14 9 He took some of it in his hands and went along, eating. When he came to his father and mother, he gave some to them, and they also ate. 14 15 But it came to pass on the seventh day that they said to Samson's wife, "Entice your husband, that he may explain the riddle to us, or else we will burn you and your father's house with fire. 14 16 Then Samson's wife wept on him, and said, "You only hate me! You do not love me! You have posed a riddle to the sons of my people, but you have not explained it to me." And he said to her, "Look, I have not explained it to my father or my mother; so should I explain it to you?" そこでサムソンの妻はサムソンの前に泣いて言った、「あなたはただわたしを憎むだけで、愛してくれません。あなたはわたしの国の人々になぞを出して、それをわたしに解き明かしませんでした」。サムソンは彼女に言った、「わたしは自分の父にも母にも解き明かさなかった。どうしてあなたに解き明かせよう」。
14 17 Now she had wept on him the seven days while their feast lasted. And it happened on the seventh day that he told her, because she pressed him so much. 14 18 So the men of the city said to him on the seventh day before the sun went down: "What is sweeter than honey? And what is stronger than a lion?" And he said to them: "If you had not plowed with my heifer, You would not have solved my riddle!" 七日目になって、日の没する前に町の人々はサムソンに言った、／「蜜より甘いものに何があろう。ししより強いものに何があろう」。サムソンは彼らに言った、／「わたしの若い雌牛で耕さなかったなら、／わたしのなぞは解けなかった」。
14 19 Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon him mightily, and he went down to Ashkelon and killed thirty of their men, took their apparel, and gave the changes of clothing to those who had explained the riddle. 15 1 After a while, in the time of wheat harvest, it happened that Samson visited his wife with a young goat. And he said, "Let me go in to my wife, into her room." But her father would not permit him to go in. 日がたって後、麦刈の時にサムソンは子やぎを携えて妻をおとずれ、「へやにはいって、妻に会いましょう」と言ったが、妻の父ははいることを許さなかった。
15 2 Her father said, "I really thought that you thoroughly hated her; therefore I gave her to your companion. Is not her younger sister better than she? Please, take her instead." そして父は言った、「あなたが確かに彼女をきらったに相違ないと思ったので、わたしは彼女をあなたの客であった者にやりました。彼女の妹は彼女よりもきれいではありませんか。どうぞ、彼女の代りに妹をめとってください」。

15 9 Now the Philistines went up, encamped in Judah, and deployed themselves against Lehi. そこでペリシテびとは上ってきて、ユダに陣を取り、レヒを攻めたので、
15 10 And the men of Judah said, "Why have you come up against us?" So they answered, "We have come up to arrest Samson, to do to him as he has done to us." ユダの人々は言った、「あなたがたはどうしてわれわれのところに攻めのぼってきたのですか」。彼らは言った、「われわれはサムソンを縛り、彼がわれわれにしたように、彼にするために上ってきたのです」。
15 11 Then three thousand men of Judah went down to the cleft of the rock of Etam, and said to Samson, "Do you not know that the Philistines rule over us? What is this you have done to us?" 15 14 When he came to Lehi, the Philistines came shouting against him. 15 17 And so it was, when he had finished speaking, that he threw the jawbone from his hand, and called that place Ramath Lehi. 彼は言い終ると、その手からあご骨を投げすてた。これがためにその所は「あご骨の丘」と呼ばれた。

16 1 Now Samson went to Gaza and saw a harlot there, and went in to her. サムソンはガザへ行って、そこでひとりの遊女を見、その女のところにはいった。
16 2 When the Gazites were told, "Samson has come here!" they surrounded the place and lay in wait for him all night at the gate of the city. They were quiet all night, saying, "In the morning, when it is daylight, we will kill him." 「サムソンがここにきた」と、ガザの人々に告げるものがあったので、ガザの人々はその所を取り囲み、夜通し町の門で待ち伏せし、「われわれは朝まで待って彼を殺そう」と言って、夜通し静かにしていた。

16 7 And Samson said to her, "If they bind me with seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, then I shall become weak, and be like any other man." サムソンは女に言った、「人々がもし、かわいたことのない七本の新しい弓弦をもってわたしを縛るなら、わたしは弱くなってほかの人のようになるでしょう」。
16 8 So the lords of the Philistines brought up to her seven fresh bowstrings, not yet dried, and she bound him with them. そこでペリシテびとの君たちが、かわいたことのない七本の新しい弓弦を女に持ってきたので、女はそれをもってサムソンを縛った。
16 9 Now men were lying in wait, staying with her in the room. And she said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" But he broke the bowstrings as a strand of yarn breaks when it touches fire. 16 12 Therefore Delilah took new ropes and bound him with them, and said to him, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" And men were lying in wait, staying in the room. 16 17 that he told her all his heart, and said to her, "No razor has ever come upon my head, for I have been a Nazirite to God from my mother's womb. 16 18 When Delilah saw that he had told her all his heart, she sent and called for the lords of the Philistines, saying, "Come up once more, for he has told me all his heart." So the lords of the Philistines came up to her and brought the money in their hand. デリラはサムソンがその心をことごとく打ち明けたのを見、人をつかわしてペリシテびとの君たちを呼んで言った、「サムソンはその心をことごとくわたしに打ち明けましたから、今度こそ上っておいでなさい」。そこでペリシテびとの君たちは、銀を携えて女のもとに上ってきた。
16 19 Then she lulled him to sleep on her knees, and called for a man and had him shave off the seven locks of his head. Then she began to torment him, and his strength left him. 女は自分のひざの上にサムソンを眠らせ、人を呼んで髪の毛、七ふさをそり落させ、彼を苦しめ始めたが、その力は彼を去っていた。
16 20 And she said, "The Philistines are upon you, Samson!" So he awoke from his sleep, and said, "I will go out as before, at other times, and shake myself free!" 16 23 Now the lords of the Philistines gathered together to offer a great sacrifice to Dagon their god, and to rejoice. And they said: "Our god has delivered into our hands Samson our enemy!" さてペリシテびとの君たちは、彼らの神ダゴンに大いなる犠牲をささげて祝をしようと、共に集まって言った、「われわれの神は、敵サムソンをわれわれの手にわたされた」。
16 24 When the people saw him, they praised their god; for they said: "Our god has delivered into our hands our enemy, The destroyer of our land, And the one who multiplied our dead." 民はサムソンを見て、自分たちの神をほめたたえて言った、「われわれの神は、われわれの国を荒し、われわれを多く殺した敵をわれわれの手にわたされた」。
16 25 So it happened, when their hearts were merry, that they said, "Call for Samson, that he may perform for us." So they called for Samson from the prison, and he performed for them. 16 28 Then Samson called to the Lord, saying, "O Lord God, remember me, I pray! Strengthen me, I pray, just this once, O God, that I may with one blow take vengeance on the Philistines for my two eyes!" サムソンは主に呼ばわって言った、「ああ、主なる神よ、どうぞ、わたしを覚えてください。ああ、神よ、どうぞもう一度、わたしを強くして、わたしの二つの目の一つのためにでもペリシテびとにあだを報いさせてください」。
16 29 And Samson took hold of the two middle pillars which supported the temple, and he braced himself against them, one on his right and the other on his left. そしてサムソンは、その家をささえている二つの中柱の一つを右の手に、一つを左の手にかかえて、身をそれに寄せ、
16 30 Then Samson said, "Let me die with the Philistines!" And he pushed with all his might, and the temple fell on the lords and all the people who were in it. 17 1 Now there was a man from the mountains of Ephraim, whose name was Micah. ここにエフライムの山地の人で、名をミカと呼ぶものがあった。
17 2And he said to his mother, "The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from you, and on which you put a curse, even saying it in my ears--here is the silver with me; I took it." And his mother said, "May you be blessed by the Lord, my son!" 彼は母に言った、「あなたはかつて銀千百枚を取られたので、それをのろい、わたしにも話されましたが、その銀はわたしが持っています。わたしがそれを取ったのです」。母は言った、「どうぞ主がわが子を祝福されますように」。
17 3 So when he had returned the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, "I had wholly dedicated the silver from my hand to the Lord for my son, to make a carved image and a molded image; now therefore, I will return it to you." そして彼が銀千百枚を母に返したので、母は言った、「わたしはわたしの子のために一つの刻んだ像と、一つの鋳た像を造るためにその銀をわたしの手から主に献納します。それで今それをあなたに返しましょう」。

17 6 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. そのころイスラエルには王がなかったので、人々はおのおの自分たちの目に正しいと思うことを行った。
17 7 Now there was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah, of the family of Judah; he was a Levite, and was staying there. さてここにユダの氏族のもので、ユダのベツレヘムからきたひとりの若者があった。彼はレビびとであって、そこに寄留していたのである。
17 8 The man departed from the city of Bethlehem in Judah to stay wherever he could find a place. Then he came to the mountains of Ephraim, to the house of Micah, as he journeyed. この人は自分の住むべきところを尋ねて、ユダのベツレヘムの町を去り、旅してエフライムの山地のミカの家にきた。
17 9 And Micah said to him, "Where do you come from?" So he said to him, "I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah, and I am on my way to find a place to stay." ミカは彼に言った、「あなたはどこからおいでになりましたか」。彼は言った、「わたしはユダのベツレヘムのレビびとですが、住むべきところを尋ねて旅をしているのです」。
17 10Micah said to him, "Dwell with me, and be a father and a priest to me, and I will give you ten shekels of silver per year, a suit of clothes, and your sustenance." So the Levite went in. ミカは言った、「わたしと一緒にいて、わたしのために父とも祭司ともなってください。そうすれば年に銀十枚と衣服ひとそろいと食物とをさしあげましょう」。
17 11 Then the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man became like one of his sons to him. レビびとはついにその人と一緒に住むことを承諾した。そしてその若者は彼の子のひとりのようになった。
17 12 So Micah consecrated the Levite, and the young man became his priest, and lived in the house of Micah. ミカはレビびとであるこの若者を立てて自分の祭司としたので、彼はミカの家にいた。

18 1 In those days there was no king in Israel. And in those days the tribe of the Danites was seeking an inheritance for itself to dwell in; for until that day their inheritance among the tribes of Israel had not fallen to them. そのころイスラエルには王がなかった。そのころダンびとの部族はイスラエルの部族のうちにあって、その日までまだ嗣業の地を得なかったので自分たちの住むべき嗣業の地を求めていた。
18 2 So the children of Dan sent five men of their family from their territory, men of valor from Zorah and Eshtaol, to spy out the land and search it. They said to them, "Go, search the land." 18 3 While they were at the house of Micah, they recognized the voice of the young Levite. They turned aside and said to him, "Who brought you here? What are you doing in this place? 18 7 So the five men departed and went to Laish. They saw the people who were there, how they dwelt safely, in the manner of the Sidonians, quiet and secure. There were no rulers in the land who might put them to shame for anything. 18 8 Then the spies came back to their brethren at Zorah and Eshtaol, and their brethren said to them, "What is your report?" かくて彼らがゾラとエシタオルにおる兄弟たちのもとに帰ってくると、兄弟たちは彼らに言った、「いかがでしたか」。
18 9 So they said, "Arise, let us go up against them. For we have seen the land, and indeed it is very good. Would you do nothing? Do not hesitate to go, and enter to possess the land. 彼らは言った、「立って彼らのところに攻め上りましょう。われわれはかの地を見たが、非常に豊かです。あなたがたはなぜじっとしているのですか。ためらわずに進んで行って、かの地を取りなさい。
18 10 When you go, you will come to a secure people and a large land. For God has given it into your hands, a place where there is no lack of anything that is on the earth." あなたがたが行けば、安らかにおる民の所に行くでしょう。その地は広く、神はそれをあなたがたの手に賜わるのです。そこには地にあるもの一つとして欠けているものはありません」。
18 11 And six hundred men of the family of the Danites went from there, from Zorah and Eshtaol, armed with weapons of war. そこでダンの氏族のもの六百人が武器を帯びて、ゾラとエシタオルを出発し、
18 12 Then they went up and encamped in Kirjath Jearim in Judah. (Therefore they call that place Mahaneh Dan to this day. There it is, west of Kirjath Jearim.) 上って行ってユダのキリアテ・ヤリムに陣を張った。このゆえに、その所は今日までマハネダンと呼ばれる。それはキリアテ・ヤリムの西にある。
18 13 And they passed from there to the mountains of Ephraim, and came to the house of Micah. 彼らはそこからエフライムの山地に進み、ミカの家に着いた。
18 14 Then the five men who had gone to spy out the country of Laish answered and said to their brethren, "Do you know that there are in these houses an ephod, household idols, a carved image, and a molded image? Now therefore, consider what you should do." かのライシの国をうかがいに行った五人の者はその兄弟たちに言った、「あなたがたはこれらの家にエポデとテラピムと刻んだ像と鋳た像のあるのを知っていますか。それであなたがたは今、なすべきことを決めなさい」。
18 15 So they turned aside there, and came to the house of the young Levite man--to the house of Micah--and greeted him. そこで彼らはその方へ身をめぐらして、かのレビびとの若者の家すなわちミカの家に行って、彼に安否を問うた。
18 16 The six hundred men armed with their weapons of war, who were of the children of Dan, stood by the entrance of the gate. しかし武器を帯びた六百人のダンの人々は門の入口に立っていた。
18 17 Then the five men who had gone to spy out the land went up. Entering there, they took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molded image. The priest stood at the entrance of the gate with the six hundred men who were armed with weapons of war. かの土地をうかがいに行った五人の者は上って行って、そこにはいり、刻んだ像とエポデとテラピムと鋳た像とを取ったが、祭司は武器を帯びた六百人の者と共に門の入口に立っていた。
18 18 When these went into Micah's house and took the carved image, the ephod, the household idols, and the molded image, the priest said to them, "What are you doing?" 彼らがミカの家にはいって刻んだ像とエポデとテラピムと鋳た像とを取った時、祭司は彼らに言った、「あなたがたは何をなさいますか」。
18 19 And they said to him, "Be quiet, put your hand over your mouth, and come with us; be a father and a priest to us. Is it better for you to be a priest to the household of one man, or that you be a priest to a tribe and a family in Israel?" 彼らは言った、「黙りなさい。あなたの手を口にあてて、われわれと一緒にきて、われわれのために父とも祭司ともなりなさい。ひとりの家の祭司であるのと、イスラエルの一部族、一氏族の祭司であるのと、どちらがよいですか」。
18 20 So the priest's heart was glad; and he took the ephod, the household idols, and the carved image, and took his place among the people. 祭司は喜んで、エポデとテラピムと刻んだ像とを取り、民のなかに加わった。
18 21 Then they turned and departed, and put the little ones, the livestock, and the goods in front of them. かくて彼らは身をめぐらして去り、その子供たちと家畜と貨財をさきにたてて進んだが、
18 22 When they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men who were in the houses near Micah's house gathered together and overtook the children of Dan. ミカの家をはるかに離れたとき、ミカは家に近い家の人々を集め、ダンの人々に追いつき、
18 23 And they called out to the children of Dan. So they turned around and said to Micah, "What ails you, that you have gathered such a company?" ダンの人々を呼んだので、彼らはふり向いてミカに言った、「あなたがそのように仲間を連れてきたのは、どうしたのですか」。
18 24 So he said, "You have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and you have gone away. Now what more do I have? How can you say to me, 'What ails you?' " 彼は言った、「あなたがたが、わたしの造った神々および祭司を奪い去ったので、わたしに何が残っていますか。しかるにあなたがたがわたしに向かって『どうしたのですか』と言われるとは何事ですか」。
18 25 And the children of Dan said to him, "Do not let your voice be heard among us, lest angry men fall upon you, and you lose your life, with the lives of your household!" ダンの人々は彼に言った、「あなたは大きな声を出さないがよい。気の荒い連中があなたに撃ちかかって、あなたは自分の命と家族の命を失うようになるでしょう」。
18 26Then the children of Dan went their way. And when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back to his house. こうしてダンの人々は去って行ったが、ミカは彼らの強いのを見て、くびすをかえして自分の家に帰った。
18 27 So they took the things Micah had made, and the priest who had belonged to him, and went to Laish, to a people quiet and secure; and they struck them with the edge of the sword and burned the city with fire. さて彼らはミカが造った物と、ミカと共にいた祭司とを奪ってライシにおもむき、穏やかで、安らかな民のところへ行って、つるぎをもって彼らを撃ち、火をつけてその町を焼いたが、
18 28 There was no deliverer, because it was far from Sidon, and they had no ties with anyone. It was in the valley that belongs to Beth Rehob. So they rebuilt the city and dwelt there. シドンを遠く離れており、ほかの民との交わりがなかったので、それを救うものがなかった。その町はベテレホブに属する谷にあった。彼らは町を建てなおしてそこに住み、
18 29 And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born to Israel. However, the name of the city formerly was Laish. イスラエルに生れた先祖ダンの名にしたがって、その町の名をダンと名づけた。その町の名はもとはライシであった。
18 30 Then the children of Dan set up for themselves the carved image; and Jonathan the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land. そしてダンの人々は刻んだ像を自分たちのために安置し、モーセの孫すなわちゲルショムの子ヨナタンとその子孫がダンびとの部族の祭司となって、国が捕囚となる日にまで及んだ。
18 31 So they set up for themselves Micah's carved image which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh. 神の家がシロにあったあいだ、常に彼らはミカが造ったその刻んだ像を飾って置いた。

19 1 And it came to pass in those days, when there was no king in Israel, that there was a certain Levite staying in the remote mountains of Ephraim. He took for himself a concubine from Bethlehem in Judah. そのころ、イスラエルに王がなかった時、エフライムの山地の奥にひとりのレビびとが寄留していた。彼はユダのベツレヘムからひとりの女を迎えて、めかけとしていたが、
19 2 But his concubine played the harlot against him, and went away from him to her father's house at Bethlehem in Judah, and was there four whole months. そのめかけは怒って、彼のところを去り、ユダのベツレヘムの父の家に帰って、そこに四か月ばかり過ごした。
19 3 Then her husband arose and went after her, to speak kindly to her and bring her back, having his servant and a couple of donkeys with him. So she brought him into her father's house; and when the father of the young woman saw him, he was glad to meet him. そこで夫は彼女をなだめて連れ帰ろうと、しもべと二頭のろばを従え、立って彼女のあとを追って行った。彼が女の父の家に着いた時、娘の父は彼を見て、喜んで迎えた。
19 4 Now his father-in-law, the young woman's father, detained him; and he stayed with him three days. So they ate and drank and lodged there. 娘の父であるしゅうとが引き留めたので、彼は三日共におり、みな飲み食いしてそこに宿った。
19 5 Then it came to pass on the fourth day that they arose early in the morning, and he stood to depart; but the young woman's father said to his son-in-law, "Refresh your heart with a morsel of bread, and afterward go your way." 四日目に彼らは朝はやく起き、彼が立ち去ろうとしたので、娘の父は婿に言った、「少し食事をして元気をつけ、それから出かけなさい」。
19 6 So they sat down, and the two of them ate and drank together. Then the young woman's father said to the man, "Please be content to stay all night, and let your heart be merry." そこでふたりは座して共に飲み食いしたが、娘の父はその人に言った、「どうぞもう一晩泊まって楽しく過ごしなさい」。
19 7 And when the man stood to depart, his father-in-law urged him; so he lodged there again. その人は立って去ろうとしたが、しゅうとがしいたので、ついにまたそこに宿った。
19 8 Then he arose early in the morning on the fifth day to depart, but the young woman's father said, "Please refresh your heart." So they delayed until afternoon; and both of them ate. 五日目になって、朝はやく起きて去ろうとしたが、娘の父は言った、「どうぞ、元気をつけて、日が傾くまでとどまりなさい」。そこで彼らふたりは食事をした。
19 9 And when the man stood to depart--he and his concubine and his servant--his father-in-law, the young woman's father, said to him, "Look, the day is now drawing toward evening; please spend the night. See, the day is coming to an end; lodge here, that your heart may be merry. Tomorrow go your way early, so that you may get home." その人がついにめかけおよびしもべと共に去ろうとして立ちあがったとき、娘の父であるしゅうとは彼に言った、「日も暮れようとしている。どうぞもう一晩泊まりなさい。日は傾いた。ここに宿って楽しく過ごしなさい。そしてあしたの朝はやく起きて出立し、家に帰りなさい」。
19 10 However, the man was not willing to spend that night; so he rose and departed, and came to opposite Jebus (that is, Jerusalem). With him were the two saddled donkeys; his concubine was also with him. しかし、その人は泊まることを好まないので、立って去り、エブスすなわちエルサレムの向かいに着いた。くらをおいた二頭のろばと彼のめかけも一緒であった。
19 11 They were near Jebus, and the day was far spent; and the servant said to his master, "Come, please, and let us turn aside into this city of the Jebusites and lodge in it." 彼らがエブスに近づいたとき、日はすでに没したので、しもべは主人に言った、「さあ、われわれは道を転じてエブスびとのこの町にはいって、そこに宿りましょう」。
19 12 But his master said to him, "We will not turn aside here into a city of foreigners, who are not of the children of Israel; we will go on to Gibeah." 主人は彼に言った、「われわれは道を転じて、イスラエルの人々の町でない外国人の町に、はいってはならない。ギベアまで行こう」。
19 13 So he said to his servant, "Come, let us draw near to one of these places, and spend the night in Gibeah or in Ramah." 彼はまたしもべに言った、「さあ、われわれはギベアかラマか、そのうちの一つに着いてそこに宿ろう」。
19 14 And they passed by and went their way; and the sun went down on them near Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin. 彼らは進んで行ったが、ベニヤミンに属するギベアの近くで日が暮れたので、
19 15 They turned aside there to go in to lodge in Gibeah. And when he went in, he sat down in the open square of the city, for no one would take them into his house to spend the night. ギベアへ行って宿ろうと、そこに道を転じ、町にはいって、その広場に座した。だれも彼らを家に迎えて泊めてくれる者がなかったからである。
19 16 Just then an old man came in from his work in the field at evening, who also was from the mountains of Ephraim; he was staying in Gibeah, whereas the men of the place were Benjamites. 時にひとりの老人が夕暮に畑の仕事から帰ってきた。この人はエフライムの山地の者で、ギベアに寄留していたのである。ただしこの所の人々はベニヤミンびとであった。
19 17And when he raised his eyes, he saw the traveler in the open square of the city; and the old man said, "Where are you going, and where do you come from?" 彼は目をあげて、町の広場に旅人のおるのを見た。老人は言った、「あなたはどこへ行かれるのですか。どこからおいでになりましたか」。
19 18 So he said to him, "We are passing from Bethlehem in Judah toward the remote mountains of Ephraim; I am from there. I went to Bethlehem in Judah; now I am going to the house of the Lord. But there is no one who will take me into his house, その人は言った、「われわれはユダのベツレヘムから、エフライムの山地の奥へ行くものです。わたしはあそこの者で、ユダのベツレヘムへ行き、今わたしの家に帰るところですが、だれもわたしを家に泊めてくれる者がありません。
19 19 although we have both straw and fodder for our donkeys, and bread and wine for myself, for your female servant, and for the young man who is with your servant; there is no lack of anything." われわれには、ろばのわらも飼葉もあり、またわたしと、はしためと、しもべと共にいる若者との食物も酒もあって、何も欠けているものはありません」。
19 20 And the old man said, "Peace be with you! However, let all your needs be my responsibility; only do not spend the night in the open square." 老人は言った、「安心しなさい。あなたの必要なものはなんでも備えましょう。ただ広場で夜を過ごしてはなりません」。
19 21 So he brought him into his house, and gave fodder to the donkeys. And they washed their feet, and ate and drank. そして彼を家に連れていって、ろばに飼葉を与えた。彼らは足を洗って飲み食いした。
19 22 As they were enjoying themselves, suddenly certain men of the city, perverted men, surrounded the house and beat on the door. They spoke to the master of the house, the old man, saying, "Bring out the man who came to your house, that we may know him carnally!" 彼らが楽しく過ごしていた時、町の人々の悪い者どもがその家を取り囲み、戸を打ちたたいて、家のあるじである老人に言った、「あなたの家にきた人を出しなさい。われわれはその者を知るであろう」。
19 23 But the man, the master of the house, went out to them and said to them, "No, my brethren! I beg you, do not act so wickedly! Seeing this man has come into my house, do not commit this outrage. しかし家のあるじは彼らのところに出ていって言った、「いいえ、兄弟たちよ、どうぞ、そんな悪いことをしないでください。この人はすでにわたしの家にはいったのだから、そんなつまらない事をしないでください。
19 24 Look, here is my virgin daughter and the man's concubine; let me bring them out now. Humble them, and do with them as you please; but to this man do not do such a vile thing!" ここに処女であるわたしの娘と、この人のめかけがいます。今それを出しますから、それをはずかしめ、あなたがたの好きなようにしなさい。しかしこの人にはそのようなつまらない事をしないでください」。
19 25 But the men would not heed him. So the man took his concubine and brought her out to them. And they knew her and abused her all night until morning; and when the day began to break, they let her go. しかし人々が聞きいれなかったので、その人は自分のめかけをとって彼らのところに出した。彼らはその女を犯して朝まで終夜はずかしめ、日ののぼるころになって放し帰らせた。
19 26 Then the woman came as the day was dawning, and fell down at the door of the man's house where her master was, till it was light. 朝になって女は自分の主人を宿してくれた人の家の戸口にきて倒れ伏し、夜のあけるまでに及んだ。
19 27 When her master arose in the morning, and opened the doors of the house and went out to go his way, there was his concubine, fallen at the door of the house with her hands on the threshold. 彼女の主人は朝起きて家の戸を開き、出て旅立とうとすると、そのめかけである女が家の戸口に、手を敷居にかけて倒れていた。
19 28 And he said to her, "Get up and let us be going." But there was no answer. So the man lifted her onto the donkey; and the man got up and went to his place. 彼は女に向かって、「起きよ、行こう」と言ったけれども、なんの答もなかった。そこでその人は女をろばに乗せ、立って自分の家におもむいたが、
19 29 When he entered his house he took a knife, laid hold of his concubine, and divided her into twelve pieces, limb by limb, and sent her throughout all the territory of Israel. その家に着いたとき、刀を執り、めかけを捕えて、そのからだを十二切れに断ち切り、それをイスラエルの全領域にあまねく送った。
19 30 And so it was that all who saw it said, "No such deed has been done or seen from the day that the children of Israel came up from the land of Egypt until this day. Consider it, confer, and speak up!" それを見たものはみな言った、「イスラエルの人々がエジプトの地から上ってきた日から今日まで、このような事は起ったこともなく、また見たこともない。この事をよく考え、協議して言うことを決めよ」。
士師記 Judges 20 20
20 1 So all the children of Israel came out, from Dan to Beersheba, as well as from the land of Gilead, and the congregation gathered together as one man before the Lord at Mizpah. そこでイスラエルの人々は、ダンからベエルシバまで、またギレアデの地からもみな出てきて、その会衆はひとりのようにミヅパで主のもとに集まった。
20 2 And the leaders of all the people, all the tribes of Israel, presented themselves in the assembly of the people of God, four hundred thousand foot soldiers who drew the sword. 民の首領たち、すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族の首領たちは、みずから神の民の集合に出た。つるぎを帯びている歩兵が四十万人あった。
20 3 (Now the children of Benjamin heard that the children of Israel had gone up to Mizpah.) Then the children of Israel said, "Tell us, how did this wicked deed happen?" ベニヤミンの人々は、イスラエルの人々がミヅパに上ったことを聞いた。イスラエルの人々は言った、「どうして、この悪事が起ったのか、われわれに話してください」。
20 4 So the Levite, the husband of the woman who was murdered, answered and said, "My concubine and I went into Gibeah, which belongs to Benjamin, to spend the night. 殺された女の夫であるレビびとは答えて言った、「わたしは、めかけと一緒にベニヤミンに属するギベアへ行って宿りましたが、
20 5 And the men of Gibeah rose against me, and surrounded the house at night because of me. They intended to kill me, but instead they ravished my concubine so that she died. ギベアの人々は立ってわたしを攻め、夜の間に、わたしのおる家を取り囲んで、わたしを殺そうと企て、ついにわたしのめかけをはずかしめて、死なせました。
20 6 So I took hold of my concubine, cut her in pieces, and sent her throughout all the territory of the inheritance of Israel, because they committed lewdness and outrage in Israel. それでわたしはめかけを捕えて断ち切り、それをイスラエルの嗣業のすべての地方にあまねく送りました。彼らがイスラエルにおいて憎むべきみだらなことを行ったからです。
20 7 Look! All of you are children of Israel; give your advice and counsel here and now!" イスラエルの人々よ、あなたがたは皆自分の意見と考えをここに述べてください」。
20 8 So all the people arose as one man, saying, "None of us will go to his tent, nor will any turn back to his house; 民は皆ひとりのように立って言った、「われわれはだれも自分の天幕に行きません。まただれも自分の家に帰りません。
20 9but now this is the thing which we will do to Gibeah: We will go up against it by lot. われわれが今ギベアに対してしようとする事はこれです。われわれはくじを引いて、ギベアに攻めのぼりましょう。
20 10 We will take ten men out of every hundred throughout all the tribes of Israel, a hundred out of every thousand, and a thousand out of every ten thousand, to make provisions for the people, that when they come to Gibeah in Benjamin, they may repay all the vileness that they have done in Israel." すなわちイスラエルのすべての部族から百人について十人、千人について百人、万人について千人を選んで、民の糧食をとらせ、民はベニヤミンのギベアに行って、ベニヤミンびとがイスラエルにおいておこなったすべてのみだらな事に対して、報復しましょう」。
20 11 So all the men of Israel were gathered against the city, united together as one man. こうしてイスラエルの人々は皆集まり、一致結束して町を攻めようとした。
20 12 Then the tribes of Israel sent men through all the tribe of Benjamin, saying, "What is this wickedness that has occurred among you? イスラエルのもろもろの部族は人々をあまねくベニヤミンの部族のうちにつかわして言わせた、「あなたがたのうちに起ったこの事は、なんたる悪事でしょうか。
20 13 Now therefore, deliver up the men, the perverted men who are in Gibeah, that we may put them to death and remove the evil from Israel!" But the children of Benjamin would not listen to the voice of their brethren, the children of Israel. それで今ギベアにいるあの悪い人々をわたしなさい。われわれは彼らを殺して、イスラエルから悪を除き去りましょう」。しかしベニヤミンの人々はその兄弟であるイスラエルの人々の言葉を聞きいれなかった。
20 14 Instead, the children of Benjamin gathered together from their cities to Gibeah, to go to battle against the children of Israel. かえってベニヤミンの人々は町々からギベアに集まり、出てイスラエルの人々と戦おうとした。
20 15 And from their cities at that time the children of Benjamin numbered twenty-six thousand men who drew the sword, besides the inhabitants of Gibeah, who numbered seven hundred select men. その日、町々から集まったベニヤミンの人々はつるぎを帯びている者二万六千人あり、ほかにギベアの住民で集まった精兵が七百人あった。
20 16 Among all this people were seven hundred select men who were left-handed; every one could sling a stone at a hair's breadth and not miss. このすべての民のうちに左ききの精兵が七百人あって、いずれも一本の毛すじをねらって石を投げても、はずれることがなかった。
20 17Now besides Benjamin, the men of Israel numbered four hundred thousand men who drew the sword; all of these were men of war. イスラエルの人々の集まった者はベニヤミンを除いて、つるぎを帯びている者四十万人あり、いずれも軍人であった。
20 18 Then the children of Israel arose and went up to the house of God to inquire of God. They said, "Which of us shall go up first to battle against the children of Benjamin?" The Lord said, "Judah first!" イスラエルの人々は立ちあがってベテルにのぼり、神に尋ねた、「われわれのうち、いずれがさきにのぼって、ベニヤミンの人々と戦いましょうか」。主は言われた、「ユダがさきに」。
20 19 So the children of Israel rose in the morning and encamped against Gibeah. そこでイスラエルの人々は、朝起きて、ギベアに対し陣を取った。
20 20 And the men of Israel went out to battle against Benjamin, and the men of Israel put themselves in battle array to fight against them at Gibeah. すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンと戦うために出て行って、ギベアで彼らに対して戦いの備えをしたが、
20 21 Then the children of Benjamin came out of Gibeah, and on that day cut down to the ground twenty-two thousand men of the Israelites. ベニヤミンの人々はギベアから出てきて、その日イスラエルの人々のうち二万二千人を地に撃ち倒した。
20 22 And the people, that is, the men of Israel, encouraged themselves and again formed the battle line at the place where they had put themselves in array on the first day. しかしイスラエルの民の人々は奮いたって初めの日に備えをした所にふたたび戦いの備えをした。
20 23 Then the children of Israel went up and wept before the Lord until evening, and asked counsel of the Lord, saying, "Shall I again draw near for battle against the children of my brother Benjamin?" And the Lord said, "Go up against him." そしてイスラエルの人々は上って行って主の前に夕暮まで泣き、主に尋ねた、「われわれは再びわれわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦いを交えるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「攻めのぼれ」。
20 24 So the children of Israel approached the children of Benjamin on the second day. そこでイスラエルの人々は、次の日またベニヤミンの人々の所に攻めよせたが、
20 25 And Benjamin went out against them from Gibeah on the second day, and cut down to the ground eighteen thousand more of the children of Israel; all these drew the sword. ベニヤミンは次の日またギベアから出て、これを迎え、ふたたびイスラエルの人々のうち一万八千人を地に撃ち倒した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。
20 26 Then all the children of Israel, that is, all the people, went up and came to the house of God and wept. They sat there before the Lord and fasted that day until evening; and they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before the Lord. これがためにイスラエルのすべての人々すなわち全軍はベテルに上って行って泣き、その所で主の前に座して、その日夕暮まで断食し、燔祭と酬恩祭を主の前にささげた。
20 27 So the children of Israel inquired of the Lord (the ark of the covenant of God was there in those days, そしてイスラエルの人々は主に尋ね、――そのころ神の契約の箱はそこにあって、
20 28 and Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron, stood before it in those days), saying, "Shall I yet again go out to battle against the children of my brother Benjamin, or shall I cease?" And the Lord said, "Go up, for tomorrow I will deliver them into your hand." アロンの子エレアザルの子であるピネハスが、それに仕えていた――そして言った、「われわれはなおふたたび出て、われわれの兄弟であるベニヤミンの人々と戦うべきでしょうか。あるいはやめるべきでしょうか」。主は言われた、「のぼれ。わたしはあす彼らをあなたがたの手にわたすであろう」。
20 29 Then Israel set men in ambush all around Gibeah. そこでイスラエルはギベアの周囲に伏兵を置き、
20 30And the children of Israel went up against the children of Benjamin on the third day, and put themselves in battle array against Gibeah as at the other times. そしてイスラエルの人々は三日目にまたベニヤミンの人々のところに攻めのぼり、前のようにギベアに対して備えをした。
20 31 So the children of Benjamin went out against the people, and were drawn away from the city. They began to strike down and kill some of the people, as at the other times, in the highways (one of which goes up to Bethel and the other to Gibeah) and in the field, about thirty men of Israel. ベニヤミンの人々は出て、民を迎えたが、ついに町からおびき出されたので、彼らは前のように大路で民を撃ちはじめ、また野でイスラエルの人を三十人ばかり殺した。その大路は、一つはベテルに至り、一つはギベアに至るものであった。
20 32And the children of Benjamin said, "They are defeated before us, as at first." But the children of Israel said, "Let us flee and draw them away from the city to the highways." ベニヤミンの人々は言った、「彼らは初めのように、われわれの前に撃ち破られる」。しかしイスラエルの人々は言った、「われわれは逃げて、彼らを町から大路におびき出そう」。
20 33So all the men of Israel rose from their place and put themselves in battle array at Baal Tamar. Then Israel's men in ambush burst forth from their position in the plain of Geba. そしてイスラエルの人々は皆その所から立ってバアル・タマルに備えをした。その間に待ち伏せていたイスラエルの人々がその所から、すなわちゲバの西から現れ出た。
20 34 And ten thousand select men from all Israel came against Gibeah, and the battle was fierce. But the Benjamites did not know that disaster was upon them. すなわちイスラエルの全軍のうちから精兵一万人がきて、ギベアを襲い、その戦いは激しかった。しかしベニヤミンの人々は災の自分たちに迫っているのを知らなかった。
20 35 The Lord defeated Benjamin before Israel. And the children of Israel destroyed that day twenty-five thousand one hundred Benjamites; all these drew the sword. 主がイスラエルの前にベニヤミンを撃ち敗られたので、イスラエルの人々は、その日ベニヤミンびと二万五千一百人を殺した。これらは皆つるぎを帯びている者であった。
20 36 So the children of Benjamin saw that they were defeated. The men of Israel had given ground to the Benjamites, because they relied on the men in ambush whom they had set against Gibeah. こうしてベニヤミンの人々は自分たちの撃ち敗られたのを見た。そこでイスラエルの人々はギベアに対して設けた伏兵をたのんで、ベニヤミンびとを避けて退いた。
20 37 And the men in ambush quickly rushed upon Gibeah; the men in ambush spread out and struck the whole city with the edge of the sword. 伏兵は急いでギベアに突き入り、進んでつるぎをもって町をことごとく撃った。
20 38 Now the appointed signal between the men of Israel and the men in ambush was that they would make a great cloud of smoke rise up from the city, イスラエルの人々と伏兵の間に定めた合図は、町から大いなるのろしがあがるとき、
20 39 whereupon the men of Israel would turn in battle. Now Benjamin had begun to strike and kill about thirty of the men of Israel. For they said, "Surely they are defeated before us, as in the first battle." イスラエルの人々が戦いに転じることであった。さてベニヤミンは初めイスラエルの人々を撃って三十人ばかりを殺したので言った、「まことに彼らは最初の戦いのようにわれわれの前に撃ち敗られる」。
20 40 But when the cloud began to rise from the city in a column of smoke, the Benjamites looked behind them, and there was the whole city going up in smoke to heaven. しかし、のろしが煙の柱となって町からのぼりはじめたので、ベニヤミンの人々がうしろを見ると、町はみな煙となって天にのぼっていた。
20 41 And when the men of Israel turned back, the men of Benjamin panicked, for they saw that disaster had come upon them. その時イスラエルの人々が向きを変えたので、ベニヤミンの人々は災が自分たちに迫ったのを見て、うろたえ、
20 42 Therefore they turned their backs before the men of Israel in the direction of the wilderness; but the battle overtook them, and whoever came out of the cities they destroyed in their midst. イスラエルの人々の前から身をめぐらして荒野の方に向かったが、戦いが彼らに追い迫り、町から出てきた者どもは、彼らを中にはさんで殺した。
20 43They surrounded the Benjamites, chased them, and easily trampled them down as far as the front of Gibeah toward the east. すなわちイスラエルの人々はベニヤミンの人々を切り倒し、追い撃ち、踏みにじって、ノハから東の方ギベアの向かいにまで及んだ。
20 44 And eighteen thousand men of Benjamin fell; all these were men of valor. ベニヤミンの倒れた者は一万八千人で、みな勇士であった。
20 45 Then they turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon; and they cut down five thousand of them on the highways. Then they pursued them relentlessly up to Gidom, and killed two thousand of them. 彼らは身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げたが、イスラエルの人々は大路でそのうち五千人を切り倒し、なおも追撃してギドムに至り、そのうちの二千人を殺した。
20 46 So all who fell of Benjamin that day were twenty-five thousand men who drew the sword; all these were men of valor. こうしてその日ベニヤミンの倒れた者はつるぎを帯びている者合わせて二万五千人で、みな勇士であった。
20 47 But six hundred men turned and fled toward the wilderness to the rock of Rimmon, and they stayed at the rock of Rimmon for four months. しかし六百人の者は身をめぐらして荒野の方、リンモンの岩まで逃げて、四か月の間リンモンの岩に住んだ。
20 48 And the men of Israel turned back against the children of Benjamin, and struck them down with the edge of the sword--from every city, men and beasts, all who were found. They also set fire to all the cities they came to. そこでイスラエルの人々はまた身をかえしてベニヤミンの人々を攻め、つるぎをもって人も獣もすべて見つけたものを撃ち殺し、また見つけたすべての町に火をかけた。

21 1 Now the men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah, saying, "None of us shall give his daughter to Benjamin as a wife." かつてイスラエルの人々はミヅパで、「われわれのうちひとりもその娘をベニヤミンびとの妻として与える者があってはならない」と言って誓ったので、
21 2 Then the people came to the house of God, and remained there before God till evening. They lifted up their voices and wept bitterly, 民はベテルに行って、そこで夕暮まで神の前に座し、声をあげて激しく泣いて、
21 3 and said, "O Lord God of Israel, why has this come to pass in Israel, that today there should be one tribe missing in Israel?" 言った、「イスラエルの神、主よ、どうしてイスラエルにこのような事が起って、今日イスラエルに一つの部族が欠けるようになったのですか」。
21 4 So it was, on the next morning, that the people rose early and built an altar there, and offered burnt offerings and peace offerings. 翌日、民は早く起きて、そこに祭壇を築き、燔祭と酬恩祭をささげた。
21 5 The children of Israel said, "Who is there among all the tribes of Israel who did not come up with the assembly to the Lord?" For they had made a great oath concerning anyone who had not come up to the Lord at Mizpah, saying, "He shall surely be put to death." そしてイスラエルの人々は言った、「イスラエルのすべての部族のうちで集会に上って、主のもとに行かなかった者はだれか」。これは彼らがミヅパにのぼって、主のもとに行かない者のことについて大いなる誓いを立てて、「その人は必ず殺されなければならない」と言ったからである。
21 6 And the children of Israel grieved for Benjamin their brother, and said, "One tribe is cut off from Israel today. しかしイスラエルの人々は兄弟ベニヤミンをあわれんで言った、「今日イスラエルに一つの部族が絶えた。
21 7 What shall we do for wives for those who remain, seeing we have sworn by the Lord that we will not give them our daughters as wives?" われわれは主をさして、われわれの娘を彼らに妻として与えないと誓ったので、かの残った者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいであろうか」。
21 8 And they said, "What one is there from the tribes of Israel who did not come up to Mizpah to the Lord?" And, in fact, no one had come to the camp from Jabesh Gilead to the assembly. 彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルの部族のうちで、ミヅパにのぼって主のもとに行かなかったのはどの部族か」。ところがヤベシ・ギレアデからはひとりも陣営にきて集会に臨んだ者がなかった。
21 9 For when the people were counted, indeed, not one of the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead was there. すなわち民を集めて見ると、ヤベシ・ギレアデの住民はひとりもそこにいなかった。
21 10So the congregation sent out there twelve thousand of their most valiant men, and commanded them, saying, "Go and strike the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead with the edge of the sword, including the women and children. そこで会衆は勇士一万二千人をかしこにつかわし、これに命じて言った、「ヤベシ・ギレアデに行って、その住民を、女、子供もろともつるぎをもって撃て。
21 11 And this is the thing that you shall do: You shall utterly destroy every male, and every woman who has known a man intimately." そしてこのようにしなければならない。すなわち男および男と寝た女はことごとく滅ぼさなければならない」。
21 12 So they found among the inhabitants of Jabesh Gilead four hundred young virgins who had not known a man intimately; and they brought them to the camp at Shiloh, which is in the land of Canaan. こうして彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの住民のうちで四百人の若い処女を獲た。これはまだ男と寝たことがなく、男を知らない者である。彼らはこれをカナンの地にあるシロの陣営に連れてきた。
21 13 Then the whole congregation sent word to the children of Benjamin who were at the rock of Rimmon, and announced peace to them. そこで全会衆は人をつかわして、リンモンの岩におるベニヤミンの人々に平和を告げた。
21 14 So Benjamin came back at that time, and they gave them the women whom they had saved alive of the women of Jabesh Gilead; and yet they had not found enough for them. ベニヤミンの人々がその時、帰ってきたので、彼らはヤベシ・ギレアデの女のうちから生かしておいた女をこれに与えたが、なお足りなかった。
21 15And the people grieved for Benjamin, because the Lord had made a void in the tribes of Israel. こうして民は、主がイスラエルの部族のうちに欠陥をつくられたことのために、ベニヤミンをあわれんだ。
21 16 Then the elders of the congregation said, "What shall we do for wives for those who remain, since the women of Benjamin have been destroyed?" 会衆の長老たちは言った、「ベニヤミンの女が絶えたので、かの残りの者どもに妻をめとらせるにはどうしたらよいでしょうか」。
21 17 And they said, "There must be an inheritance for the survivors of Benjamin, that a tribe may not be destroyed from Israel. 彼らはまた言った、「イスラエルから一つの部族が消えうせないためにベニヤミンのうちの残りの者どもに、あとつぎがなければならない。
21 18 However, we cannot give them wives from our daughters, for the children of Israel have sworn an oath, saying, 'Cursed be the one who gives a wife to Benjamin.' " しかし、われわれの娘を彼らの妻に与えることはできない。イスラエルの人々が『ベニヤミンに妻を与える者はのろわれる』と言って誓ったからである」。
21 19 Then they said, "In fact, there is a yearly feast of the Lord in Shiloh, which is north of Bethel, on the east side of the highway that goes up from Bethel to Shechem, and south of Lebonah." それで彼らは言った、「年々シロに主の祭がある」。シロはベテルの北にあって、ベテルからシケムにのぼる大路の東、レバナの南にある。
21 20 Therefore they instructed the children of Benjamin, saying, "Go, lie in wait in the vineyards, そして彼らはベニヤミンの人々に命じて言った、「あなたがたは行って、ぶどう畑に待ち伏せして、
21 21 and watch; and just when the daughters of Shiloh come out to perform their dances, then come out from the vineyards, and every man catch a wife for himself from the daughters of Shiloh; then go to the land of Benjamin. うかがいなさい。もしシロの娘たちが踊りを踊りに出てきたならば、ぶどう畑から出て、シロの娘たちのうちから、めいめい自分の妻をとって、ベニヤミンの地に連れて行きなさい。
21 22 Then it shall be, when their fathers or their brothers come to us to complain, that we will say to them, 'Be kind to them for our sakes, because we did not take a wife for any of them in the war; for it is not as though you have given the women to them at this time, making yourselves guilty of your oath.' " もしその父あるいは兄弟がきて、われわれに訴えるならば、われわれは彼らに、『われわれのために彼らをゆるしてください。戦争のときにわれわれは、彼らおのおのに妻をとってやらなかったし、またあなたがたも彼らに与えなかったからです。もし与えたならば、あなたがたは罪を犯したことになるからでした』と言いましょう」。
21 23 And the children of Benjamin did so; they took enough wives for their number from those who danced, whom they caught. Then they went and returned to their inheritance, and they rebuilt the cities and dwelt in them. ベニヤミンの人々はそのように行い、踊っている者どものうちから自分たちの数にしたがって妻を取り、それを連れて領地に帰り、町々を建てなおして、そこに住んだ。
21 24 So the children of Israel departed from there at that time, every man to his tribe and family; they went out from there, every man to his inheritance. こうしてイスラエルの人々は、その時そこを去って、おのおのその部族および氏族に帰った。すなわちそこを立って、おのおのその嗣業の地に帰った。
21 25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did what was right in his own eyes. そのころ、イスラエルには王がなかったので、おのおの自分の目に正しいと見るところをおこなった。
