伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 1	1
1	1 The words of the Preacher, the son of David, king in Jerusalem.	ダビデの子、エルサレムの王である伝道者の言葉。
1	2"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher; "Vanity of vanities, all is vanity."	伝道者は言う、空の空、空の空、いっさいは空である。
1	3 What profit has a man from all his labor In which he toils under the sun?	日の下で人が労するすべての労苦は、その身になんの益があるか。
1	4 One generation passes away, and another generation comes; But the earth abides forever.	世は去り、世はきたる。しかし地は永遠に変らない。
1	5 The sun also rises, and the sun goes down, And hastens to the place where it arose.	日はいで、日は没し、その出た所に急ぎ行く。
1	6 The wind goes toward the south, And turns around to the north; The wind whirls about continually, And comes again on its circuit.	風は南に吹き、また転じて、北に向かい、めぐりにめぐって、またそのめぐる所に帰る。
1	7 All the rivers run into the sea, Yet the sea is not full; To the place from which the rivers come, There they return again.	川はみな、海に流れ入る、しかし海は満ちることがない。川はその出てきた所にまた帰って行く。
1	8 All things are full of labor; Man cannot express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, Nor the ear filled with hearing.	すべての事は人をうみ疲れさせる、人はこれを言いつくすことができない。目は見ることに飽きることがなく、耳は聞くことに満足することがない。
1	9 That which has been is what will be, That which is done is what will be done, And there is nothing new under the sun.	先にあったことは、また後にもある、先になされた事は、また後にもなされる。日の下には新しいものはない。
1	10 Is there anything of which it may be said, "See, this is new"? It has already been in ancient times before us.	「見よ、これは新しいものだ」と／言われるものがあるか、それはわれわれの前にあった世々に、すでにあったものである。
1	11 There is no remembrance of former things, Nor will there be any remembrance of things that are to come By those who will come after.	前の者のことは覚えられることがない、また、きたるべき後の者のことも、後に起る者はこれを覚えることがない。
1	12 I, the Preacher, was king over Israel in Jerusalem.	伝道者であるわたしはエルサレムで、イスラエルの王であった。
1	13 And I set my heart to seek and search out by wisdom concerning all that is done under heaven; this burdensome task God has given to the sons of man, by which they may be exercised.	わたしは心をつくし、知恵を用いて、天が下に行われるすべてのことを尋ね、また調べた。これは神が、人の子らに与えて、ほねおらせられる苦しい仕事である。
1	14 I have seen all the works that are done under the sun; and indeed, all is vanity and grasping for the wind.	わたしは日の下で人が行うすべてのわざを見たが、みな空であって風を捕えるようである。
1	15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, And what is lacking cannot be numbered.	曲ったものは、まっすぐにすることができない、欠けたものは数えることができない。
1	16 I communed with my heart, saying, "Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge."	わたしは心の中に語って言った、「わたしは、わたしより先にエルサレムを治めたすべての者にまさって、多くの知恵を得た。わたしの心は知恵と知識を多く得た」。
1	17 And I set my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is grasping for the wind.	わたしは心をつくして知恵を知り、また狂気と愚痴とを知ろうとしたが、これもまた風を捕えるようなものであると悟った。
1	18 For in much wisdom is much grief, And he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.	それは知恵が多ければ悩みが多く、知識を増す者は憂いを増すからである。

2	1 I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with mirth; therefore enjoy pleasure"; but surely, this also was vanity.	わたしは自分の心に言った、「さあ、快楽をもって、おまえを試みよう。おまえは愉快に過ごすがよい」と。しかし、これもまた空であった。
2	2 I said of laughter--"Madness!"; and of mirth, "What does it accomplish?"	わたしは笑いについて言った、「これは狂気である」と。また快楽について言った、「これは何をするのか」と。
2	3 I searched in my heart how to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.	わたしの心は知恵をもってわたしを導いているが、わたしは酒をもって自分の肉体を元気づけようと試みた。また、人の子は天が下でその短い一生の間、どんな事をしたら良いかを、見きわめるまでは、愚かな事をしようと試みた。
2	4 I made my works great, I built myself houses, and planted myself vineyards.	わたしは大きな事業をした。わたしは自分のために家を建て、ぶどう畑を設け、
2	5 I made myself gardens and orchards, and I planted all kinds of fruit trees in them.	園と庭をつくり、またすべて実のなる木をそこに植え、
2	6 I made myself water pools from which to water the growing trees of the grove.	池をつくって、木のおい茂る林に、そこから水を注がせた。
2	7 I acquired male and female servants, and had servants born in my house. Yes, I had greater possessions of herds and flocks than all who were in Jerusalem before me.	わたしは男女の奴隷を買った。またわたしの家で生れた奴隷を持っていた。わたしはまた、わたしより先にエルサレムにいただれよりも多くの牛や羊の財産を持っていた。
2	8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the special treasures of kings and of the provinces. I acquired male and female singers, the delights of the sons of men, and musical instruments of all kinds.	わたしはまた銀と金を集め、王たちと国々の財宝を集めた。またわたしは歌うたう男、歌うたう女を得た。また人の子の楽しみとするそばめを多く得た。
2	9 So I became great and excelled more than all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.	こうして、わたしは大いなる者となり、わたしより先にエルサレムにいたすべての者よりも、大いなる者となった。わたしの知恵もまた、わたしを離れなかった。
2	10Whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I did not withhold my heart from any pleasure, For my heart rejoiced in all my labor; And this was my reward from all my labor.	なんでもわたしの目の好むものは遠慮せず、わたしの心の喜ぶものは拒まなかった。わたしの心がわたしのすべての労苦によって、快楽を得たからである。そしてこれはわたしのすべての労苦によって得た報いであった。
2	11 Then I looked on all the works that my hands had done And on the labor in which I had toiled; And indeed all was vanity and grasping for the wind. There was no profit under the sun.	そこで、わたしはわが手のなしたすべての事、およびそれをなすに要した労苦を顧みたとき、見よ、皆、空であって、風を捕えるようなものであった。日の下には益となるものはないのである。
2	12 Then I turned myself to consider wisdom and madness and folly; For what can the man do who succeeds the king?-- Only what he has already done.	わたしはまた、身をめぐらして、知恵と、狂気と、愚痴とを見た。そもそも、王の後に来る人は何をなし得ようか。すでに彼がなした事にすぎないのだ。
2	13 Then I saw that wisdom excels folly As light excels darkness.	光が暗きにまさるように、知恵が愚痴にまさるのを、わたしは見た。
2	14 The wise man's eyes are in his head, But the fool walks in darkness. Yet I myself perceived That the same event happens to them all.	知者の目は、その頭にある。しかし愚者は暗やみを歩む。けれどもわたしはなお同一の運命が彼らのすべてに臨むことを知っている。
2	15 So I said in my heart, "As it happens to the fool, It also happens to me, And why was I then more wise?" Then I said in my heart, "This also is vanity."	わたしは心に言った、「愚者に臨む事はわたしにも臨むのだ。それでどうしてわたしは賢いことがあろう」。わたしはまた心に言った、「これもまた空である」と。
2	16 For there is no more remembrance of the wise than of the fool forever, Since all that now is will be forgotten in the days to come. And how does a wise man die? As the fool!	そもそも、知者も愚者も同様に長く覚えられるものではない。きたるべき日には皆忘れられてしまうのである。知者が愚者と同じように死ぬのは、どうしたことであろう。
2	17 Therefore I hated life because the work that was done under the sun was distressing to me, for all is vanity and grasping for the wind.	そこで、わたしは生きることをいとった。日の下に行われるわざは、わたしに悪しく見えたからである。皆空であって、風を捕えるようである。
2	18 Then I hated all my labor in which I had toiled under the sun, because I must leave it to the man who will come after me.	わたしは日の下で労したすべての労苦を憎んだ。わたしの後に来る人にこれを残さなければならないからである。
2	19 And who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will rule over all my labor in which I toiled and in which I have shown myself wise under the sun. This also is vanity.	そして、その人が知者であるか、または愚者であるかは、だれが知り得よう。そうであるのに、その人が、日の下でわたしが労し、かつ知恵を働かしてなしたすべての労苦をつかさどることになるのだ。これもまた空である。
2	20 Therefore I turned my heart and despaired of all the labor in which I had toiled under the sun.	それでわたしはふり返ってみて、日の下でわたしが労したすべての労苦について、望みを失った。
2	21 For there is a man whose labor is with wisdom, knowledge, and skill; yet he must leave his heritage to a man who has not labored for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.	今ここに人があって、知恵と知識と才能をもって労しても、これがために労しない人に、すべてを残して、その所有とさせなければならないのだ。これもまた空であって、大いに悪い。
2	22 For what has man for all his labor, and for the striving of his heart with which he has toiled under the sun?	そもそも、人は日の下で労するすべての労苦と、その心づかいによってなんの得るところがあるか。
2	23For all his days are sorrowful, and his work burdensome; even in the night his heart takes no rest. This also is vanity.	そのすべての日はただ憂いのみであって、そのわざは苦しく、その心は夜の間も休まることがない。これもまた空である。
2	24 Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.	人は食い飲みし、その労苦によって得たもので心を楽しませるより良い事はない。これもまた神の手から出ることを、わたしは見た。
2	25 For who can eat, or who can have enjoyment, more than I?	だれが神を離れて、食い、かつ楽しむことのできる者があろう。
2	26For God gives wisdom and knowledge and joy to a man who is good in His sight; but to the sinner He gives the work of gathering and collecting, that he may give to him who is good before God. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.	神は、その心にかなう人に、知恵と知識と喜びとをくださる。しかし罪びとには仕事を与えて集めることと、積むことをさせられる。これは神の心にかなう者にそれを賜わるためである。これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようである。

3	1 To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven:	天が下のすべての事には季節があり、すべてのわざには時がある。
3	2 A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant, And a time to pluck what is planted;	生るるに時があり、死ぬるに時があり、植えるに時があり、植えたものを抜くに時があり、
3	3 A time to kill, And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up;	殺すに時があり、いやすに時があり、こわすに時があり、建てるに時があり、
3	4 A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance;	泣くに時があり、笑うに時があり、悲しむに時があり、踊るに時があり、
3	5 A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing;	石を投げるに時があり、石を集めるに時があり、抱くに時があり、抱くことをやめるに時があり、
3	6 A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away;	捜すに時があり、失うに時があり、保つに時があり、捨てるに時があり、
3	7 A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak;	裂くに時があり、縫うに時があり、黙るに時があり、語るに時があり、
3	8 A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace.	愛するに時があり、憎むに時があり、戦うに時があり、和らぐに時がある。
3	9 What profit has the worker from that in which he labors?	働く者はその労することにより、なんの益を得るか。
3	10 I have seen the God-given task with which the sons of men are to be occupied.	わたしは神が人の子らに与えて、ほねおらせられる仕事を見た。
3	11 He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also He has put eternity in their hearts, except that no one can find out the work that God does from beginning to end.	神のなされることは皆その時にかなって美しい。神はまた人の心に永遠を思う思いを授けられた。それでもなお、人は神のなされるわざを初めから終りまで見きわめることはできない。
3	12 I know that nothing is better for them than to rejoice, and to do good in their lives,	わたしは知っている。人にはその生きながらえている間、楽しく愉快に過ごすよりほかに良い事はない。
3	13 and also that every man should eat and drink and enjoy the good of all his labor--it is the gift of God.	またすべての人が食い飲みし、そのすべての労苦によって楽しみを得ることは神の賜物である。
3	14 I know that whatever God does, It shall be forever. Nothing can be added to it, And nothing taken from it. God does it, that men should fear before Him.	わたしは知っている。すべて神がなさる事は永遠に変ることがなく、これに加えることも、これから取ることもできない。神がこのようにされるのは、人々が神の前に恐れをもつようになるためである。
3	15 That which is has already been, And what is to be has already been; And God requires an account of what is past.	今あるものは、すでにあったものである。後にあるものも、すでにあったものである。神は追いやられたものを尋ね求められる。
3	16 Moreover I saw under the sun: In the place of judgment, Wickedness was there; And in the place of righteousness, Iniquity was there.	わたしはまた、日の下を見たが、さばきを行う所にも不正があり、公義を行う所にも不正がある。
3	17 I said in my heart, "God shall judge the righteous and the wicked, For there is a time there for every purpose and for every work."	わたしは心に言った、「神は正しい者と悪い者とをさばかれる。神はすべての事と、すべてのわざに、時を定められたからである」と。
3	18 I said in my heart, "Concerning the condition of the sons of men, God tests them, that they may see that they themselves are like animals."	わたしはまた、人の子らについて心に言った、「神は彼らをためして、彼らに自分たちが獣にすぎないことを悟らせられるのである」と。
3	19 For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one thing befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.	人の子らに臨むところは獣にも臨むからである。すなわち一様に彼らに臨み、これの死ぬように、彼も死ぬのである。彼らはみな同様の息をもっている。人は獣にまさるところがない。すべてのものは空だからである。
3	20 All go to one place: all are from the dust, and all return to dust.	みな一つ所に行く。皆ちりから出て、皆ちりに帰る。
3	21 Who knows the spirit of the sons of men, which goes upward, and the spirit of the animal, which goes down to the earth?	だれが知るか、人の子らの霊は上にのぼり、獣の霊は地にくだるかを。
3	22 So I perceived that nothing is better than that a man should rejoice in his own works, for that is his heritage. For who can bring him to see what will happen after him?	それで、わたしは見た、人はその働きによって楽しむにこした事はない。これが彼の分だからである。だれが彼をつれていって、その後の、どうなるかを見させることができようか。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 4	4
4	1 Then I returned and considered all the oppression that is done under the sun: And look! The tears of the oppressed, But they have no comforter-- On the side of their oppressors there is power, But they have no comforter.	わたしはまた、日の下に行われるすべてのしえたげを見た。見よ、しえたげられる者の涙を。彼らを慰める者はない。しえたげる者の手には権力がある。しかし彼らを慰める者はいない。
4	2 Therefore I praised the dead who were already dead, More than the living who are still alive.	それで、わたしはなお生きている生存者よりも、すでに死んだ死者を、さいわいな者と思った。
4	3 Yet, better than both is he who has never existed, Who has not seen the evil work that is done under the sun.	しかし、この両者よりもさいわいなのは、まだ生れない者で、日の下に行われる悪しきわざを見ない者である。
4	4 Again, I saw that for all toil and every skillful work a man is envied by his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.	また、わたしはすべての労苦と、すべての巧みなわざを見たが、これは人が互にねたみあってなすものである。これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようである。
4	5 The fool folds his hands And consumes his own flesh.	愚かなる者は手をつかねて、自分の肉を食う。
4	6Better a handful with quietness Than both hands full, together with toil and grasping for the wind.	片手に物を満たして平穏であるのは、両手に物を満たして労苦し、風を捕えるのにまさる。
4	7 Then I returned, and I saw vanity under the sun:	わたしはまた、日の下に空なる事のあるのを見た。
4	8 There is one alone, without companion: He has neither son nor brother. Yet there is no end to all his labors, Nor is his eye satisfied with riches. But he never asks, "For whom do I toil and deprive myself of good?" This also is vanity and a grave misfortune.	ここに人がある。ひとりであって、仲間もなく、子もなく、兄弟もない。それでも彼の労苦は窮まりなく、その目は富に飽くことがない。また彼は言わない、「わたしはだれのために労するのか、どうして自分を楽しませないのか」と。これもまた空であって、苦しいわざである。
4	9 Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.	ふたりはひとりにまさる。彼らはその労苦によって良い報いを得るからである。
4	10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, For he has no one to help him up.	すなわち彼らが倒れる時には、そのひとりがその友を助け起す。しかしひとりであって、その倒れる時、これを助け起す者のない者はわざわいである。
4	11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?	またふたりが一緒に寝れば暖かである。ひとりだけで、どうして暖かになり得ようか。
4	12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him. And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.	人がもし、そのひとりを攻め撃ったなら、ふたりで、それに当るであろう。三つよりの綱はたやすくは切れない。
4	13 Better a poor and wise youth Than an old and foolish king who will be admonished no more.	貧しくて賢いわらべは、老いて愚かで、もはや、いさめをいれることを知らない王にまさる。
4	14 For he comes out of prison to be king, Although he was born poor in his kingdom.	たとい、その王が獄屋から出て、王位についた者であっても、また自分の国に貧しく生れて王位についた者であっても、そうである。
4	15 I saw all the living who walk under the sun; They were with the second youth who stands in his place.	わたしは日の下に歩むすべての民が、かのわらべのように王に代って立つのを見た。
4	16There was no end of all the people over whom he was made king; Yet those who come afterward will not rejoice in him. Surely this also is vanity and grasping for the wind.	すべての民は果てしがない。彼はそのすべての民を導いた。しかし後に来る者は彼を喜ばない。たしかに、これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようである。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 5	5
5	1 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.	神の宮に行く時には、その足を慎むがよい。近よって聞くのは愚かな者の犠牲をささげるのにまさる。彼らは悪を行っていることを知らないからである。
5	2 Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God. For God is in heaven, and you on earth; Therefore let your words be few.	神の前で軽々しく口をひらき、また言葉を出そうと、心にあせってはならない。神は天にいまし、あなたは地におるからである。それゆえ、あなたは言葉を少なくせよ。
5	3 For a dream comes through much activity, And a fool's voice is known by his many words.	夢は仕事の多いことによってきたり、愚かなる者の声は言葉の多いことによって知られる。
5	4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it; For He has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you have vowed--	あなたは神に誓いをなすとき、それを果すことを延ばしてはならない。神は愚かな者を喜ばれないからである。あなたの誓ったことを必ず果せ。
5	5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.	あなたが誓いをして、それを果さないよりは、むしろ誓いをしないほうがよい。
5	6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?	あなたの口が、あなたに罪を犯させないようにせよ。また使者の前にそれは誤りであったと言ってはならない。どうして、神があなたの言葉を怒り、あなたの手のわざを滅ぼしてよかろうか。
5	7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.	夢が多ければ空なる言葉も多い。しかし、あなたは神を恐れよ。
5	8 If you see the oppression of the poor, and the violent perversion of justice and righteousness in a province, do not marvel at the matter; for high official watches over high official, and higher officials are over them.	あなたは国のうちに貧しい者をしえたげ、公道と正義を曲げることのあるのを見ても、その事を怪しんではならない。それは位の高い人よりも、さらに高い者があって、その人をうかがうからである。そしてそれらよりもなお高い者がある。
5	9 Moreover the profit of the land is for all; even the king is served from the field.	しかし、要するに耕作した田畑をもつ国には王は利益である。
5	10 He who loves silver will not be satisfied with silver; Nor he who loves abundance, with increase. This also is vanity.	金銭を好む者は金銭をもって満足しない。富を好む者は富を得て満足しない。これもまた空である。
5	11 When goods increase, They increase who eat them; So what profit have the owners Except to see them with their eyes?	財産が増せば、これを食う者も増す。その持ち主は目にそれを見るだけで、なんの益があるか。
5	12 The sleep of a laboring man is sweet, Whether he eats little or much; But the abundance of the rich will not permit him to sleep.	働く者は食べることが少なくても多くても、快く眠る。しかし飽き足りるほどの富は、彼に眠ることをゆるさない。
5	13There is a severe evil which I have seen under the sun: Riches kept for their owner to his hurt.	わたしは日の下に悲しむべき悪のあるのを見た。すなわち、富はこれをたくわえるその持ち主に害を及ぼすことである。
5	14 But those riches perish through misfortune; When he begets a son, there is nothing in his hand.	またその富は不幸な出来事によってうせ行くことである。それで、その人が子をもうけても、彼の手には何も残らない。
5	15 As he came from his mother's womb, naked shall he return, To go as he came; And he shall take nothing from his labor Which he may carry away in his hand.	彼は母の胎から出てきたように、すなわち裸で出てきたように帰って行く。彼はその労苦によって得た何物をもその手に携え行くことができない。
5	16 And this also is a severe evil-- Just exactly as he came, so shall he go. And what profit has he who has labored for the wind?	人は全くその来たように、また去って行かなければならない。これもまた悲しむべき悪である。風のために労する者になんの益があるか。
5	17All his days he also eats in darkness, And he has much sorrow and sickness and anger.	人は一生、暗やみと、悲しみと、多くの悩みと、病と、憤りの中にある。
5	18 Here is what I have seen: It is good and fitting for one to eat and drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labor in which he toils under the sun all the days of his life which God gives him; for it is his heritage.	見よ、わたしが見たところの善かつ美なる事は、神から賜わった短い一生の間、食い、飲み、かつ日の下で労するすべての労苦によって、楽しみを得る事である。これがその分だからである。
5	19 As for every man to whom God has given riches and wealth, and given him power to eat of it, to receive his heritage and rejoice in his labor--this is the gift of God.	また神はすべての人に富と宝と、それを楽しむ力を与え、またその分を取らせ、その労苦によって楽しみを得させられる。これが神の賜物である。
5	20 For he will not dwell unduly on the days of his life, because God keeps him busy with the joy of his heart.	このような人は自分の生きる日のことを多く思わない。神は喜びをもって彼の心を満たされるからである。

6	1 There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, and it is common among men:	わたしは日の下に一つの悪のあるのを見た。これは人々の上に重い。
6	2 A man to whom God has given riches and wealth and honor, so that he lacks nothing for himself of all he desires; yet God does not give him power to eat of it, but a foreigner consumes it. This is vanity, and it is an evil affliction.	すなわち神は富と、財産と、誉とを人に与えて、その心に慕うものを、一つも欠けることのないようにされる。しかし神は、その人にこれを持つことを許されないで、他人がこれを持つようになる。これは空である。悪しき病である。
6	3 If a man begets a hundred children and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but his soul is not satisfied with goodness, or indeed he has no burial, I say that a stillborn child is better than he--	たとい人は百人の子をもうけ、また命長く、そのよわいの日が多くても、その心が幸福に満足せず、また葬られることがなければ、わたしは言う、流産の子はその人にまさると。
6	4 for it comes in vanity and departs in darkness, and its name is covered with darkness.	これはむなしく来て、暗やみの中に去って行き、その名は暗やみにおおわれる。
6	5 Though it has not seen the sun or known anything, this has more rest than that man,	またこれは日を見ず、物を知らない。けれどもこれは彼よりも安らかである。
6	6 even if he lives a thousand years twice--but has not seen goodness. Do not all go to one place?	たとい彼は千年に倍するほど生きても幸福を見ない。みな一つ所に行くのではないか。
6	7 All the labor of man is for his mouth, And yet the soul is not satisfied.	人の労苦は皆、その口のためである。しかしその食欲は満たされない。
6	8 For what more has the wise man than the fool? What does the poor man have, Who knows how to walk before the living?	賢い者は愚かな者になんのまさるところがあるか。また生ける者の前に歩むことを知る貧しい者もなんのまさるところがあるか。
6	9 Better is the sight of the eyes than the wandering of desire. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.	目に見る事は欲望のさまよい歩くにまさる。これもまた空であって、風を捕えるようなものである。
6	10 Whatever one is, he has been named already, For it is known that he is man; And he cannot contend with Him who is mightier than he.	今あるものは、すでにその名がつけられた。そして人はいかなる者であるかは知られた。それで人は自分よりも力強い者と争うことはできない。
6	11 Since there are many things that increase vanity, How is man the better?	言葉が多ければむなしい事も多い。人になんの益があるか。
6	12 For who knows what is good for man in life, all the days of his vain life which he passes like a shadow? Who can tell a man what will happen after him under the sun?	人はその短く、むなしい命の日を影のように送るのに、何が人のために善であるかを知ることができよう。だれがその身の後に、日の下に何があるであろうかを人に告げることができるか。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 7	7
7	1 A good name is better than precious ointment, And the day of death than the day of one's birth;	良き名は良き油にまさり、死ぬる日は生るる日にまさる。
7	2 Better to go to the house of mourning Than to go to the house of feasting, For that is the end of all men; And the living will take it to heart.	悲しみの家にはいるのは、宴会の家にはいるのにまさる。死はすべての人の終りだからである。生きている者は、これを心にとめる。
7	3 Sorrow is better than laughter, For by a sad countenance the heart is made better.	悲しみは笑いにまさる。顔に憂いをもつことによって、心は良くなるからである。
7	4 The heart of the wise is in the house of mourning, But the heart of fools is in the house of mirth.	賢い者の心は悲しみの家にあり、愚かな者の心は楽しみの家にある。
7	5 It is better to hear the rebuke of the wise Than for a man to hear the song of fools.	賢い者の戒めを聞くのは、愚かな者の歌を聞くのにまさる。
7	6 For like the crackling of thorns under a pot, So is the laughter of the fool. This also is vanity.	愚かな者の笑いは／かまの下に燃えるいばらの音のようである。これもまた空である。
7	7 Surely oppression destroys a wise man's reason, And a bribe debases the heart.	たしかに、しえたげは賢い人を愚かにし、まいないは人の心をそこなう。
7	8 The end of a thing is better than its beginning; The patient in spirit is better than the proud in spirit.	事の終りはその初めよりも良い。耐え忍ぶ心は、おごり高ぶる心にまさる。
7	9 Do not hasten in your spirit to be angry, For anger rests in the bosom of fools.	気をせきたてて怒るな。怒りは愚かな者の胸に宿るからである。
7	10 Do not say, "Why were the former days better than these?" For you do not inquire wisely concerning this.	「昔が今よりもよかったのはなぜか」と言うな。あなたがこれを問うのは知恵から出るのではない。
7	11Wisdom is good with an inheritance, And profitable to those who see the sun.	知恵に財産が伴うのは良い。それは日を見る者どもに益がある。
7	12 For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense, But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.	知恵が身を守るのは、金銭が身を守るようである。しかし、知恵はこれを持つ者に生命を保たせる。これが知識のすぐれた所である。
7	13 Consider the work of God; For who can make straight what He has made crooked?	神のみわざを考えみよ。神の曲げられたものを、だれがまっすぐにすることができるか。
7	14 In the day of prosperity be joyful, But in the day of adversity consider: Surely God has appointed the one as well as the other, So that man can find out nothing that will come after him.	順境の日には楽しめ、逆境の日には考えよ。神は人に将来どういう事があるかを、知らせないために、彼とこれとを等しく造られたのである。
7	15 I have seen everything in my days of vanity: There is a just man who perishes in his righteousness, And there is a wicked man who prolongs life in his wickedness.	わたしはこのむなしい人生において、もろもろの事を見た。そこには義人がその義によって滅びることがあり、悪人がその悪によって長生きすることがある。
7	16 Do not be overly righteous, Nor be overly wise: Why should you destroy yourself?	あなたは義に過ぎてはならない。また賢きに過ぎてはならない。あなたはどうして自分を滅ぼしてよかろうか。
7	17 Do not be overly wicked, Nor be foolish: Why should you die before your time?	悪に過ぎてはならない。また愚かであってはならない。あなたはどうして、自分の時のこないのに、死んでよかろうか。
7	18 It is good that you grasp this, And also not remove your hand from the other; For he who fears God will escape them all.	あなたがこれを執るのはよい、また彼から手を引いてはならない。神をかしこむ者は、このすべてからのがれ出るのである。
7	19 Wisdom strengthens the wise More than ten rulers of the city.	知恵が知者を強くするのは、十人のつかさが町におるのにまさる。
7	20 For there is not a just man on earth who does good And does not sin.	善を行い、罪を犯さない正しい人は世にいない。
7	21 Also do not take to heart everything people say, Lest you hear your servant cursing you.	人の語るすべての事に心をとめてはならない。これはあなたが、自分のしもべのあなたをのろう言葉を聞かないためである。
7	22 For many times, also, your own heart has known That even you have cursed others.	あなたもまた、しばしば他人をのろったのを自分の心に知っているからである。
7	23 All this I have proved by wisdom. I said, "I will be wise"; But it was far from me.	わたしは知恵をもってこのすべての事を試みて、「わたしは知者となろう」と言ったが、遠く及ばなかった。
7	24 As for that which is far off and exceedingly deep, Who can find it out?	物事の理は遠く、また、はなはだ深い。だれがこれを見いだすことができよう。
7	25 I applied my heart to know, To search and seek out wisdom and the reason of things, To know the wickedness of folly, Even of foolishness and madness.	わたしは、心を転じて、物を知り、事を探り、知恵と道理を求めようとし、また悪の愚かなこと、愚痴の狂気であることを知ろうとした。
7	26 And I find more bitter than death The woman whose heart is snares and nets, Whose hands are fetters. He who pleases God shall escape from her, But the sinner shall be trapped by her.	わたしは、その心が、わなと網のような女、その手が、かせのような女は、死よりも苦い者であることを見いだした。神を喜ばす者は彼女からのがれる。しかし罪びとは彼女に捕えられる。
7	27 "Here is what I have found," says the Preacher, "Adding one thing to the other to find out the reason,	伝道者は言う、見よ、その数を知ろうとして、いちいち数えて、わたしが得たものはこれである。
7	28 Which my soul still seeks but I cannot find: One man among a thousand I have found, But a woman among all these I have not found.	わたしはなおこれを求めたけれども、得なかった。わたしは千人のうちにひとりの男子を得たけれども、そのすべてのうちに、ひとりの女子をも得なかった。
7	29 Truly, this only I have found: That God made man upright, But they have sought out many schemes."	見よ、わたしが得た事は、ただこれだけである。すなわち、神は人を正しい者に造られたけれども、人は多くの計略を考え出した事である。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 8	8
8	1 Who is like a wise man? And who knows the interpretation of a thing? A man's wisdom makes his face shine, And the sternness of his face is changed.	だれが知者のようになり得よう。だれが事の意義を知り得よう。人の知恵はその人の顔を輝かせ、またその粗暴な顔を変える。
8	2 I say, "Keep the king's commandment for the sake of your oath to God.	王の命を守れ。すでに神をさして誓ったことゆえ、驚くな。
8	3 Do not be hasty to go from his presence. Do not take your stand for an evil thing, for he does whatever pleases him."	事が悪い時は、王の前を去れ、ためらうな。彼はすべてその好むところをなすからである。
8	4 Where the word of a king is, there is power; And who may say to him, "What are you doing?"	王の言葉は決定的である。だれが彼に「あなたは何をするのか」と言うことができようか。
8	5 He who keeps his command will experience nothing harmful; And a wise man's heart discerns both time and judgment,	命令を守る者は災にあわない。知者の心は時と方法をわきまえている。
8	6 Because for every matter there is a time and judgment, Though the misery of man increases greatly.	人の悪が彼の上に重くても、すべてのわざには時と方法がある。
8	7 For he does not know what will happen; So who can tell him when it will occur?	後に起る事を知る者はない。どんな事が起るかをだれが彼に告げ得よう。
8	8No one has power over the spirit to retain the spirit, And no one has power in the day of death. There is no release from that war, And wickedness will not deliver those who are given to it.	風をとどめる力をもつ人はない。また死の日をつかさどるものはない。戦いには免除はない。また悪はこれを行う者を救うことができない。
8	9 All this I have seen, and applied my heart to every work that is done under the sun: There is a time in which one man rules over another to his own hurt.	わたしはこのすべての事を見た。また日の下に行われるもろもろのわざに心を用いた。時としてはこの人が、かの人を治めて、これに害をこうむらせることがある。
8	10 Then I saw the wicked buried, who had come and gone from the place of holiness, and they were forgotten in the city where they had so done. This also is vanity.	またわたしは悪人の葬られるのを見た。彼らはいつも聖所に出入りし、それを行ったその町でほめられた。これもまた空である。
8	11 Because the sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil.	悪しきわざに対する判決がすみやかに行われないために、人の子らの心はもっぱら悪を行うことに傾いている。
8	12 Though a sinner does evil a hundred times, and his days are prolonged, yet I surely know that it will be well with those who fear God, who fear before Him.	罪びとで百度悪をなして、なお長生きするものがあるけれども、神をかしこみ、み前に恐れをいだく者には幸福があることを、わたしは知っている。
8	13 But it will not be well with the wicked; nor will he prolong his days, which are as a shadow, because he does not fear before God.	しかし悪人には幸福がない。またその命は影のようであって長くは続かない。彼は神の前に恐れをいだかないからである。
8	14 There is a vanity which occurs on earth, that there are just men to whom it happens according to the work of the wicked; again, there are wicked men to whom it happens according to the work of the righteous. I said that this also is vanity.	地の上に空な事が行われている。すなわち、義人であって、悪人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。また、悪人であって、義人に臨むべき事が、その身に臨む者がある。わたしは言った、これもまた空であると。
8	15 So I commended enjoyment, because a man has nothing better under the sun than to eat, drink, and be merry; for this will remain with him in his labor all the days of his life which God gives him under the sun.	そこで、わたしは歓楽をたたえる。それは日の下では、人にとって、食い、飲み、楽しむよりほかに良い事はないからである。これこそは日の下で、神が賜わった命の日の間、その勤労によってその身に伴うものである。
8	16 When I applied my heart to know wisdom and to see the business that is done on earth, even though one sees no sleep day or night,	わたしは心をつくして知恵を知ろうとし、また地上に行われるわざを昼も夜も眠らずに窮めようとしたとき、
8	17 then I saw all the work of God, that a man cannot find out the work that is done under the sun. For though a man labors to discover it, yet he will not find it; moreover, though a wise man attempts to know it, he will not be able to find it.	わたしは神のもろもろのわざを見たが、人は日の下に行われるわざを窮めることはできない。人はこれを尋ねようと労しても、これを窮めることはできない。また、たとい知者があって、これを知ろうと思っても、これを窮めることはできないのである。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 9	9
9	1 For I considered all this in my heart, so that I could declare it all: that the righteous and the wise and their works are in the hand of God. People know neither love nor hatred by anything they see before them.	わたしはこのすべての事に心を用いて、このすべての事を明らかにしようとした。すなわち正しい者と賢い者、および彼らのわざが、神の手にあることを明らかにしようとした。愛するか憎むかは人にはわからない。彼らの前にあるすべてのことは空である。
9	2 All things come alike to all: One event happens to the righteous and the wicked; To the good, the clean, and the unclean; To him who sacrifices and him who does not sacrifice. As is the good, so is the sinner; He who takes an oath as he who fears an oath.	すべての人に臨むところは、みな同様である。正しい者にも正しくない者にも、善良な者にも悪い者にも、清い者にも汚れた者にも、犠牲をささげる者にも、犠牲をささげない者にも、その臨むところは同様である。善良な人も罪びとも異なることはない。誓いをなす者も、誓いをなすことを恐れる者も異なることはない。
9	3 This is an evil in all that is done under the sun: that one thing happens to all. Truly the hearts of the sons of men are full of evil; madness is in their hearts while they live, and after that they go to the dead.	すべての人に同一に臨むのは、日の下に行われるすべての事のうちの悪事である。また人の心は悪に満ち、その生きている間は、狂気がその心のうちにあり、その後は死者のもとに行くのである。
9	4 But for him who is joined to all the living there is hope, for a living dog is better than a dead lion.	すべて生ける者に連なる者には望みがある。生ける犬は、死せるししにまさるからである。
9	5 For the living know that they will die; But the dead know nothing, And they have no more reward, For the memory of them is forgotten.	生きている者は死ぬべき事を知っている。しかし死者は何事をも知らない、また、もはや報いを受けることもない。その記憶に残る事がらさえも、ついに忘れられる。
9	6 Also their love, their hatred, and their envy have now perished; Nevermore will they have a share In anything done under the sun.	その愛も、憎しみも、ねたみも、すでに消えうせて、彼らはもはや日の下に行われるすべての事に、永久にかかわることがない。
9	7 Go, eat your bread with joy, And drink your wine with a merry heart; For God has already accepted your works.	あなたは行って、喜びをもってあなたのパンを食べ、楽しい心をもってあなたの酒を飲むがよい。神はすでに、あなたのわざをよみせられたからである。
9	8 Let your garments always be white, And let your head lack no oil.	あなたの衣を常に白くせよ。あなたの頭に油を絶やすな。
9	9 Live joyfully with the wife whom you love all the days of your vain life which He has given you under the sun, all your days of vanity; for that is your portion in life, and in the labor which you perform under the sun.	日の下で神から賜わったあなたの空なる命の日の間、あなたはその愛する妻と共に楽しく暮すがよい。これはあなたが世にあってうける分、あなたが日の下で労する労苦によって得るものだからである。
9	10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with your might; for there is no work or device or knowledge or wisdom in the grave where you are going.	すべてあなたの手のなしうる事は、力をつくしてなせ。あなたの行く陰府には、わざも、計略も、知識も、知恵もないからである。
9	11 I returned and saw under the sun that-- The race is not to the swift, Nor the battle to the strong, Nor bread to the wise, Nor riches to men of understanding, Nor favor to men of skill; But time and chance happen to them all.	わたしはまた日の下を見たが、必ずしも速い者が競走に勝つのではなく、強い者が戦いに勝つのでもない。また賢い者がパンを得るのでもなく、さとき者が富を得るのでもない。また知識ある者が恵みを得るのでもない。しかし時と災難はすべての人に臨む。
9	12 For man also does not know his time: Like fish taken in a cruel net, Like birds caught in a snare, So the sons of men are snared in an evil time, When it falls suddenly upon them.	人はその時を知らない。魚がわざわいの網にかかり、鳥がわなにかかるように、人の子らもわざわいの時が突然彼らに臨む時、それにかかるのである。
9	13 This wisdom I have also seen under the sun, and it seemed great to me:	またわたしは日の下にこのような知恵の例を見た。これはわたしにとって大きな事である。
9	14 There was a little city with few men in it; and a great king came against it, besieged it, and built great snares around it.	ここに一つの小さい町があって、そこに住む人は少なかったが、大いなる王が攻めて来て、これを囲み、これに向かって大きな雲梯を建てた。
9	15 Now there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. Yet no one remembered that same poor man.	しかし、町のうちにひとりの貧しい知恵のある人がいて、その知恵をもって町を救った。ところがだれひとり、その貧しい人を記憶する者がなかった。
9	16 Then I said: "Wisdom is better than strength. Nevertheless the poor man's wisdom is despised, And his words are not heard.	そこでわたしは言う、「知恵は力にまさる。しかしかの貧しい人の知恵は軽んぜられ、その言葉は聞かれなかった」。
9	17 Words of the wise, spoken quietly, should be heard Rather than the shout of a ruler of fools.	静かに聞かれる知者の言葉は、愚かな者の中のつかさたる者の叫びにまさる。
9	18 Wisdom is better than weapons of war; But one sinner destroys much good."	知恵は戦いの武器にまさる。しかし、ひとりの罪びとは多くの良きわざを滅ぼす。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 10	10
10	1 Dead flies putrefy the perfumer's ointment, And cause it to give off a foul odor; So does a little folly to one respected for wisdom and honor.	死んだはえは、香料を造る者の／あぶらを臭くし、少しの愚痴は知恵と誉よりも重い。
10	2 A wise man's heart is at his right hand, But a fool's heart at his left.	知者の心は彼を右に向けさせ、愚者の心は左に向けさせる。
10	3 Even when a fool walks along the way, He lacks wisdom, And he shows everyone that he is a fool.	愚者は道を行く時、思慮が足りない、自分の愚かなことをすべての人に告げる。
10	4 If the spirit of the ruler rises against you, Do not leave your post; For conciliation pacifies great offenses.	つかさたる者があなたに向かって立腹しても、あなたの所を離れてはならない。温順は大いなるとがを和らげるからである。
10	5 There is an evil I have seen under the sun, As an error proceeding from the ruler:	わたしは日の下に一つの悪のあるのを見た。それはつかさたる者から出るあやまちに似ている。
10	6 Folly is set in great dignity, While the rich sit in a lowly place.	すなわち愚かなる者が高い地位に置かれ、富める者が卑しい所に座している。
10	7 I have seen servants on horses, While princes walk on the ground like servants.	わたしはしもべたる者が馬に乗り、君たる者が奴隷のように徒歩であるくのを見た。
10	8 He who digs a pit will fall into it, And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent.	穴を掘る者はみずからこれに陥り、石がきをこわす者は、へびにかまれる。
10	9 He who quarries stones may be hurt by them, And he who splits wood may be endangered by it.	石を切り出す者はそれがために傷をうけ、木を割る者はそれがために危険にさらされる。
10	10 If the ax is dull, And one does not sharpen the edge, Then he must use more strength; But wisdom brings success.	鉄が鈍くなったとき、人がその刃をみがかなければ、力を多くこれに用いねばならない。しかし、知恵は人を助けてなし遂げさせる。
10	11 A serpent may bite when it is not charmed; The babbler is no different.	へびがもし呪文をかけられる前に、かみつけば、へび使は益がない。
10	12 The words of a wise man's mouth are gracious, But the lips of a fool shall swallow him up;	知者の口の言葉は恵みがある、しかし愚者のくちびるはその身を滅ぼす。
10	13 The words of his mouth begin with foolishness, And the end of his talk is raving madness.	愚者の口の言葉の初めは愚痴である、またその言葉の終りは悪い狂気である。
10	14 A fool also multiplies words. No man knows what is to be; Who can tell him what will be after him?	愚者は言葉を多くする、しかし人はだれも後に起ることを知らない。だれがその身の後に起る事を／告げることができようか。
10	15 The labor of fools wearies them, For they do not even know how to go to the city!	愚者の労苦はその身を疲れさせる、彼は町にはいる道をさえ知らない。
10	16 Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, And your princes feast in the morning!	あなたの王はわらべであって、その君たちが朝から、ごちそうを食べる国よ、あなたはわざわいだ。
10	17 Blessed are you, O land, when your king is the son of nobles, And your princes feast at the proper time-- For strength and not for drunkenness!	あなたの王は自主の子であって、その君たちが酔うためでなく、力を得るために、適当な時にごちそうを食べる国よ、あなたはさいわいだ。
10	18Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks.	怠惰によって屋根は落ち、無精によって家は漏る。
10	19 A feast is made for laughter, And wine makes merry; But money answers everything.	食事は笑いのためになされ、酒は命を楽しませる。金銭はすべての事に応じる。
10	20 Do not curse the king, even in your thought; Do not curse the rich, even in your bedroom; For a bird of the air may carry your voice, And a bird in flight may tell the matter.	あなたは心のうちでも王をのろってはならない、また寝室でも富める者をのろってはならない。空の鳥はあなたの声を伝え、翼のあるものは事を告げるからである。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 11	11
11	1 Cast your bread upon the waters, For you will find it after many days.	あなたのパンを水の上に投げよ、多くの日の後、あなたはそれを得るからである。
11	2 Give a serving to seven, and also to eight, For you do not know what evil will be on the earth.	あなたは一つの分を七つまた八つに分けよ、あなたは、どんな災が地に起るかを知らないからだ。
11	3 If the clouds are full of rain, They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north, In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.	雲がもし雨で満ちるならば、地にそれを注ぐ、また木がもし南か北に倒れるならば、その木は倒れた所に横たわる。
11	4 He who observes the wind will not sow, And he who regards the clouds will not reap.	風を警戒する者は種をまかない、雲を観測する者は刈ることをしない。
11	5 As you do not know what is the way of the wind, Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child, So you do not know the works of God who makes everything.	あなたは、身ごもった女の胎の中で、どうして霊が骨にはいるかを知らない。そのようにあなたは、すべての事をなされる神のわざを知らない。
11	6 In the morning sow your seed, And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper, Either this or that, Or whether both alike will be good.	朝のうちに種をまけ、夕まで手を休めてはならない。実るのは、これであるか、あれであるか、あるいは二つともに良いのであるか、あなたは知らないからである。
11	7 Truly the light is sweet, And it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun;	光は快いものである。目に太陽を見るのは楽しいことである。
11	8 But if a man lives many years And rejoices in them all, Yet let him remember the days of darkness, For they will be many. All that is coming is vanity.	人が多くの年、生きながらえ、そのすべてにおいて自分を楽しませても、暗い日の多くあるべきことを忘れてはならない。すべて、きたらんとする事は皆空である。
11	9 Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, And let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; Walk in the ways of your heart, And in the sight of your eyes; But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment.	若い者よ、あなたの若い時に楽しめ。あなたの若い日にあなたの心を喜ばせよ。あなたの心の道に歩み、あなたの目の見るところに歩め。ただし、そのすべての事のために、神はあなたをさばかれることを知れ。
11	10 Therefore remove sorrow from your heart, And put away evil from your flesh, For childhood and youth are vanity.	あなたの心から悩みを去り、あなたのからだから痛みを除け。若い時と盛んな時はともに空だからである。
伝道の書	Ecclesiastes 12	12
12	1 Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, "I have no pleasure in them":	あなたの若い日に、あなたの造り主を覚えよ。悪しき日がきたり、年が寄って、「わたしにはなんの楽しみもない」と言うようにならない前に、
12	2 While the sun and the light, The moon and the stars, Are not darkened, And the clouds do not return after the rain;	また日や光や、月や星の暗くならない前に、雨の後にまた雲が帰らないうちに、そのようにせよ。
12	3In the day when the keepers of the house tremble, And the strong men bow down; When the grinders cease because they are few, And those that look through the windows grow dim;	その日になると、家を守る者は震え、力ある人はかがみ、ひきこなす女は少ないために休み、窓からのぞく者の目はかすみ、
12	4 When the doors are shut in the streets, And the sound of grinding is low; When one rises up at the sound of a bird, And all the daughters of music are brought low;	町の門は閉ざされる。その時ひきこなす音は低くなり、人は鳥の声によって起きあがり、歌の娘たちは皆、低くされる。
12	5Also they are afraid of height, And of terrors in the way; When the almond tree blossoms, The grasshopper is a burden, And desire fails. For man goes to his eternal home, And the mourners go about the streets.	彼らはまた高いものを恐れる。恐ろしいものが道にあり、あめんどうは花咲き、いなごはその身をひきずり歩き、その欲望は衰え、人が永遠の家に行こうとするので、泣く人が、ちまたを歩きまわる。
12	6 Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed, Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well.	その後、銀のひもは切れ、金の皿は砕け、水がめは泉のかたわらで破れ、車は井戸のかたわらで砕ける。
12	7 Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it.	ちりは、もとのように土に帰り、霊はこれを授けた神に帰る。
12	8 "Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "All is vanity."	伝道者は言う、「空の空、いっさいは空である」と。
12	9 And moreover, because the Preacher was wise, he still taught the people knowledge; yes, he pondered and sought out and set in order many proverbs.	さらに伝道者は知恵があるゆえに、知識を民に教えた。彼はよく考え、尋ねきわめ、あまたの箴言をまとめた。
12	10 The Preacher sought to find acceptable words; and what was written was upright--words of truth.	伝道者は麗しい言葉を得ようとつとめた。また彼は真実の言葉を正しく書きしるした。
12	11 The words of the wise are like goads, and the words of scholars are like well-driven nails, given by one Shepherd.	知者の言葉は突き棒のようであり、またよく打った釘のようなものであって、ひとりの牧者から出た言葉が集められたものである。
12	12 And further, my son, be admonished by these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is wearisome to the flesh.	わが子よ、これら以外の事にも心を用いよ。多くの書を作れば際限がない。多く学べばからだが疲れる。
12	13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all.	事の帰する所は、すべて言われた。すなわち、神を恐れ、その命令を守れ。これはすべての人の本分である。
12	14 For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.	神はすべてのわざ、ならびにすべての隠れた事を善悪ともにさばかれるからである。
