ヨナ書	Jonah 1	1
1	1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,	主の言葉がアミッタイの子ヨナに臨んで言った、
1	2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry out against it; for their wickedness has come up before Me."	「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、これに向かって呼ばわれ。彼らの悪がわたしの前に上ってきたからである」。
1	3 But Jonah arose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord. He went down to Joppa, and found a ship going to Tarshish; so he paid the fare, and went down into it, to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the Lord.	しかしヨナは主の前を離れてタルシシへのがれようと、立ってヨッパに下って行った。ところがちょうど、タルシシへ行く船があったので、船賃を払い、主の前を離れて、人々と共にタルシシへ行こうと船に乗った。
1	4 But the Lord sent out a great wind on the sea, and there was a mighty tempest on the sea, so that the ship was about to be broken up.	時に、主は大風を海の上に起されたので、船が破れるほどの激しい暴風が海の上にあった。
1	5 Then the mariners were afraid; and every man cried out to his god, and threw the cargo that was in the ship into the sea, to lighten the load. But Jonah had gone down into the lowest parts of the ship, had lain down, and was fast asleep.	それで水夫たちは恐れて、めいめい自分の神を呼び求め、また船を軽くするため、その中の積み荷を海に投げ捨てた。しかし、ヨナは船の奥に下り、伏して熟睡していた。
1	6 So the captain came to him, and said to him, "What do you mean, sleeper? Arise, call on your God; perhaps your God will consider us, so that we may not perish."	そこで船長は来て、彼に言った、「あなたはどうして眠っているのか。起きて、あなたの神に呼ばわりなさい。神があるいは、われわれを顧みて、助けてくださるだろう」。
1	7 And they said to one another, "Come, let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this trouble has come upon us." So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.	やがて人々は互に言った、「この災がわれわれに臨んだのは、だれのせいか知るために、さあ、くじを引いてみよう」。そして彼らが、くじを引いたところ、くじはヨナに当った。
1	8 Then they said to him, "Please tell us! For whose cause is this trouble upon us? What is your occupation? And where do you come from? What is your country? And of what people are you?"	そこで人々はヨナに言った、「この災がだれのせいで、われわれに臨んだのか、われわれに告げなさい。あなたの職業は何か。あなたはどこから来たのか。あなたの国はどこか。あなたはどこの民か」。
1	9 So he said to them, "I am a Hebrew; and I fear the Lord, the God of heaven, who made the sea and the dry land."	ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしはヘブルびとです。わたしは海と陸とをお造りになった天の神、主を恐れる者です」。
1	10 Then the men were exceedingly afraid, and said to him, "Why have you done this?" For the men knew that he fled from the presence of the Lord, because he had told them.	そこで人々ははなはだしく恐れて、彼に言った、「あなたはなんたる事をしてくれたのか」。人々は彼がさきに彼らに告げた事によって、彼が主の前を離れて、のがれようとしていた事を知っていたからである。
1	11 Then they said to him, "What shall we do to you that the sea may be calm for us?"--for the sea was growing more tempestuous.	人々は彼に言った、「われわれのために海が静まるには、あなたをどうしたらよかろうか」。それは海がますます荒れてきたからである。
1	12 And he said to them, "Pick me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will become calm for you. For I know that this great tempest is because of me."	ヨナは彼らに言った、「わたしを取って海に投げ入れなさい。そうしたら海は、あなたがたのために静まるでしょう。わたしにはよくわかっています。この激しい暴風があなたがたに臨んだのは、わたしのせいです」。
1	13 Nevertheless the men rowed hard to return to land, but they could not, for the sea continued to grow more tempestuous against them.	しかし人々は船を陸にこぎもどそうとつとめたが、成功しなかった。それは海が彼らに逆らって、いよいよ荒れたからである。
1	14 Therefore they cried out to the Lord and said, "We pray, O Lord, please do not let us perish for this man's life, and do not charge us with innocent blood; for You, O Lord, have done as it pleased You."	そこで人々は主に呼ばわって言った、「主よ、どうぞ、この人の生命のために、われわれを滅ぼさないでください。また罪なき血を、われわれに帰しないでください。主よ、これはみ心に従って、なされた事だからです」。
1	15 So they picked up Jonah and threw him into the sea, and the sea ceased from its raging.	そして彼らはヨナを取って海に投げ入れた。すると海の荒れるのがやんだ。
1	16 Then the men feared the Lord exceedingly, and offered a sacrifice to the Lord and took vows.	そこで人々は大いに主を恐れ、犠牲を主にささげて、誓願を立てた。
1	17Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.	主は大いなる魚を備えて、ヨナをのませられた。ヨナは三日三夜その魚の腹の中にいた。

2	1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the fish's belly.	ヨナは魚の腹の中からその神、主に祈って、
2	2And he said: "I cried out to the Lord because of my affliction, And He answered me. "Out of the belly of Sheol I cried, And You heard my voice.	言った、「わたしは悩みのうちから主に呼ばわると、主はわたしに答えられた。わたしが陰府の腹の中から叫ぶと、あなたはわたしの声を聞かれた。
2	3 For You cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the floods surrounded me; All Your billows and Your waves passed over me.	あなたはわたしを淵の中、海のまん中に投げ入れられた。大水はわたしをめぐり、あなたの波と大波は皆、わたしの上を越えて行った。
2	4 Then I said, 'I have been cast out of Your sight; Yet I will look again toward Your holy temple.'	わたしは言った、『わたしはあなたの前から追われてしまった、どうして再びあなたの聖なる宮を望みえようか』。
2	5 The waters surrounded me, even to my soul; The deep closed around me; Weeds were wrapped around my head.	水がわたしをめぐって魂にまでおよび、淵はわたしを取り囲み、海草は山の根元でわたしの頭にまといついた。
2	6 I went down to the moorings of the mountains; The earth with its bars closed behind me forever; Yet You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord, my God.	わたしは地に下り、地の貫の木はいつもわたしの上にあった。しかしわが神、主よ、あなたはわが命を穴から救いあげられた。
2	7 "When my soul fainted within me, I remembered the Lord; And my prayer went up to You, Into Your holy temple.	わが魂がわたしのうちに弱っているとき、わたしは主をおぼえ、わたしの祈はあなたに至り、あなたの聖なる宮に達した。
2	8 "Those who regard worthless idols Forsake their own Mercy.	むなしい偶像に心を寄せる者は、そのまことの忠節を捨てる。
2	9 But I will sacrifice to You With the voice of thanksgiving; I will pay what I have vowed. Salvation is of the Lord."	しかしわたしは感謝の声をもって、あなたに犠牲をささげ、わたしの誓いをはたす。救は主にある」。
2	10 So the Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.	主は魚にお命じになったので、魚はヨナを陸に吐き出した。

3	1 Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying,	時に主の言葉は再びヨナに臨んで言った、
3	2 "Arise, go to Nineveh, that great city, and preach to it the message that I tell you."	「立って、あの大きな町ニネベに行き、あなたに命じる言葉をこれに伝えよ」。
3	3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly great city, a three-day journey in extent.	そこでヨナは主の言葉に従い、立って、ニネベに行った。ニネベは非常に大きな町であって、これを行きめぐるには、三日を要するほどであった。
3	4 And Jonah began to enter the city on the first day's walk. Then he cried out and said, "Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!"	ヨナはその町にはいり、初め一日路を行きめぐって呼ばわり、「四十日を経たらニネベは滅びる」と言った。
3	5 So the people of Nineveh believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth, from the greatest to the least of them.	そこでニネベの人々は神を信じ、断食をふれ、大きい者から小さい者まで荒布を着た。
3	6 Then word came to the king of Nineveh; and he arose from his throne and laid aside his robe, covered himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes.	このうわさがニネベの王に達すると、彼はその王座から立ち上がり、朝服を脱ぎ、荒布をまとい、灰の中に座した。
3	7 And he caused it to be proclaimed and published throughout Nineveh by the decree of the king and his nobles, saying, Let neither man nor beast, herd nor flock, taste anything; do not let them eat, or drink water.	また王とその大臣の布告をもって、ニネベ中にふれさせて言った、「人も獣も牛も羊もみな、何をも味わってはならない。物を食い、水を飲んではならない。
3	8 But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily to God; yes, let every one turn from his evil way and from the violence that is in his hands.	人も獣も荒布をまとい、ひたすら神に呼ばわり、おのおのその悪い道およびその手にある強暴を離れよ。
3	9 Who can tell if God will turn and relent, and turn away from His fierce anger, so that we may not perish?	あるいは神はみ心をかえ、その激しい怒りをやめて、われわれを滅ぼされないかもしれない。だれがそれを知るだろう」。
3	10 Then God saw their works, that they turned from their evil way; and God relented from the disaster that He had said He would bring upon them, and He did not do it.	神は彼らのなすところ、その悪い道を離れたのを見られ、彼らの上に下そうと言われた災を思いかえして、これをおやめになった。

4	1 But it displeased Jonah exceedingly, and he became angry.	ところがヨナはこれを非常に不快として、激しく怒り、
4	2So he prayed to the Lord, and said, "Ah, Lord, was not this what I said when I was still in my country? Therefore I fled previously to Tarshish; for I know that You are a gracious and merciful God, slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness, One who relents from doing harm.	主に祈って言った、「主よ、わたしがなお国におりました時、この事を申したではありませんか。それでこそわたしは、急いでタルシシにのがれようとしたのです。なぜなら、わたしはあなたが恵み深い神、あわれみあり、怒ることおそく、いつくしみ豊かで、災を思いかえされることを、知っていたからです。
4	3 Therefore now, O Lord, please take my life from me, for it is better for me to die than to live!"	それで主よ、どうぞ今わたしの命をとってください。わたしにとっては、生きるよりも死ぬ方がましだからです」。
4	4 Then the Lord said, "Is it right for you to be angry?"	主は言われた、「あなたの怒るのは、よいことであろうか」。
4	5 So Jonah went out of the city and sat on the east side of the city. There he made himself a shelter and sat under it in the shade, till he might see what would become of the city.	そこでヨナは町から出て、町の東の方に座し、そこに自分のために一つの小屋を造り、町のなりゆきを見きわめようと、その下の日陰にすわっていた。
4	6 And the Lord God prepared a plant and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be shade for his head to deliver him from his misery. So Jonah was very grateful for the plant.	時に主なる神は、ヨナを暑さの苦痛から救うために、とうごまを備えて、それを育て、ヨナの頭の上に日陰を設けた。ヨナはこのとうごまを非常に喜んだ。
4	7 But as morning dawned the next day God prepared a worm, and it so damaged the plant that it withered.	ところが神は翌日の夜明けに虫を備えて、そのとうごまをかませられたので、それは枯れた。
4	8 And it happened, when the sun arose, that God prepared a vehement east wind; and the sun beat on Jonah's head, so that he grew faint. Then he wished death for himself, and said, "It is better for me to die than to live."	やがて太陽が出たとき、神が暑い東風を備え、また太陽がヨナの頭を照したので、ヨナは弱りはて、死ぬことを願って言った、「生きるよりも死ぬ方がわたしにはましだ」。
4	9 Then God said to Jonah, "Is it right for you to be angry about the plant?" And he said, "It is right for me to be angry, even to death!"	しかし神はヨナに言われた、「とうごまのためにあなたの怒るのはよくない」。ヨナは言った、「わたしは怒りのあまり狂い死にそうです」。
4	10 But the Lord said, "You have had pity on the plant for which you have not labored, nor made it grow, which came up in a night and perished in a night.	主は言われた、「あなたは労せず、育てず、一夜に生じて、一夜に滅びたこのとうごまをさえ、惜しんでいる。
4	11 And should I not pity Nineveh, that great city, in which are more than one hundred and twenty thousand persons who cannot discern between their right hand and their left--and much livestock?"	ましてわたしは十二万あまりの、右左をわきまえない人々と、あまたの家畜とのいるこの大きな町ニネベを、惜しまないでいられようか」。
