ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 1 1
1 1 The words of Nehemiah the son of Hachaliah. It came to pass in the month of Chislev, in the twentieth year, as I was in Shushan the citadel, ハカリヤの子ネヘミヤの言葉。第二十年のキスレウの月に、わたしが首都スサにいた時、
1 2 that Hanani one of my brethren came with men from Judah; and I asked them concerning the Jews who had escaped, who had survived the captivity, and concerning Jerusalem. わたしの兄弟のひとりハナニが数人の者と共にユダから来たので、わたしは捕囚を免れて生き残ったユダヤ人の事およびエルサレムの事を尋ねた。
1 3 And they said to me, "The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire." 彼らはわたしに言った、「かの州で捕囚を免れて生き残った者は大いなる悩みと、はずかしめのうちにあり、エルサレムの城壁はくずされ、その門は火で焼かれたままであります」と。
1 4 So it was, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. わたしはこれらの言葉を聞いた時、すわって泣き、数日のあいだ嘆き悲しみ、断食して天の神の前に祈って、
1 5 And I said: "I pray, Lord God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments, 言った、「天の神、主、おのれを愛し、その戒めを守る者には契約を守り、いつくしみを施される大いなる恐るべき神よ、
1 6 please let Your ear be attentive and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your servant which I pray before You now, day and night, for the children of Israel Your servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel which we have sinned against You. Both my father's house and I have sinned. どうぞ耳を傾け、目を開いてしもべの祈を聞いてください。わたしは今、あなたのしもべであるイスラエルの子孫のために、昼も夜もみ前に祈り、われわれイスラエルの子孫が、あなたに対して犯した罪をざんげいたします。まことにわたしも、わたしの父の家も罪を犯しました。
1 7We have acted very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, nor the ordinances which You commanded Your servant Moses. われわれはあなたに対して大いに悪い事を行い、あなたのしもべモーセに命じられた戒めをも、定めをも、おきてをも守りませんでした。
1 8 Remember, I pray, the word that You commanded Your servant Moses, saying, 'If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations; どうぞ、あなたのしもべモーセに命じられた言葉を、思い起してください。すなわちあなたは言われました、『もしあなたがたが罪を犯すならば、わたしはあなたがたを、もろもろの民の間に散らす。
1 9 but if you return to Me, and keep My commandments and do them, though some of you were cast out to the farthest part of the heavens, yet I will gather them from there, and bring them to the place which I have chosen as a dwelling for My name.' しかし、あなたがたがわたしに立ち返り、わたしの戒めを守って、これを行うならば、たといあなたがたのうちの散らされた者が、天の果にいても、わたしはそこから彼らを集め、わたしの名を住まわせるために選んだ所に連れて来る』と。
1 10 Now these are Your servants and Your people, whom You have redeemed by Your great power, and by Your strong hand. 彼らは、あなたが大いなる力と強い手をもって、あがなわれたあなたのしもべ、あなたの民です。
1 11 O Lord, I pray, please let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of Your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who desire to fear Your name; and let Your servant prosper this day, I pray, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man." For I was the king's cupbearer. 主よ、どうぞしもべの祈と、あなたの名を恐れることを喜ぶあなたのしもべらの祈に耳を傾けてください。どうぞ、きょう、しもべを恵み、この人の目の前であわれみを得させてください」。この時、わたしは王の給仕役であった。

2 1 And it came to pass in the month of Nisan, in the twentieth year of King Artaxerxes, when wine was before him, that I took the wine and gave it to the king. Now I had never been sad in his presence before. アルタシャスタ王の第二十年、ニサンの月に、王の前に酒が出た時、わたしは酒をついで王にささげた。これまでわたしは王の前で悲しげな顔をしていたことはなかった。
2 2 Therefore the king said to me, "Why is your face sad, since you are not sick? This is nothing but sorrow of heart." So I became dreadfully afraid, 王はわたしに言われた、「あなたは病気でもないのにどうして悲しげな顔をしているのか。何か心に悲しみをもっているにちがいない」。そこでわたしは大いに恐れて、
2 3 and said to the king, "May the king live forever! Why should my face not be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' tombs, lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire?" 王に申しあげた、「どうぞ王よ、長生きされますように。わたしの先祖の墳墓の地であるあの町は荒廃し、その門が火で焼かれたままであるのに、どうしてわたしは悲しげな顔をしないでいられましょうか」。
2 4Then the king said to me, "What do you request?" So I prayed to the God of heaven. 王はわたしにむかって、「それでは、あなたは何を願うのか」と言われたので、わたしは天の神に祈って、
2 5And I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor in your sight, I ask that you send me to Judah, to the city of my fathers' tombs, that I may rebuild it." 王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされ、しもべがあなたの前に恵みを得ますならば、どうかわたしを、ユダにあるわたしの先祖の墳墓の町につかわして、それを再建させてください」。
2 6 Then the king said to me (the queen also sitting beside him), "How long will your journey be? And when will you return?" So it pleased the king to send me; and I set him a time. 時に王妃もかたわらに座していたが、王はわたしに言われた、「あなたの旅の期間はどれほどですか。いつごろ帰ってきますか」。こうして王がわたしをつかわすことをよしとされたので、わたしは期間を定めて王に申しあげた。
2 7 Furthermore I said to the king, "If it pleases the king, let letters be given to me for the governors of the region beyond the River, that they must permit me to pass through till I come to Judah, わたしはまた王に申しあげた、「もし王がよしとされるならば、川向こうの州の知事たちに与える手紙をわたしに賜わり、わたしがユダに行きつくまで、彼らがわたしを通過させるようにしてください。
2 8 and a letter to Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he must give me timber to make beams for the gates of the citadel which pertains to the temple, for the city wall, and for the house that I will occupy." And the king granted them to me according to the good hand of my God upon me. また王の山林を管理するアサフに与える手紙をも賜わり、神殿に属する城の門を建てるため、また町の石がき、およびわたしの住むべき家を建てるために用いる材木をわたしに与えるようにしてください」。わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたので、王はわたしの願いを許された。
2 9 Then I went to the governors in the region beyond the River, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me. そこでわたしは川向こうの州の知事たちの所へ行って、王の手紙を渡した。なお王は軍の長および騎兵をわたしと共につかわした。
2 10 When Sanballat the Horonite and Tobiah the Ammonite official heard of it, they were deeply disturbed that a man had come to seek the well-being of the children of Israel. ところがホロニびとサンバラテおよびアンモンびと奴隷トビヤはこれを聞き、イスラエルの子孫の福祉を求める人が来たというので、大いに感情を害した。
2 11 So I came to Jerusalem and was there three days. わたしはエルサレムに着いて、そこに三日滞在した後、
2 12 Then I arose in the night, I and a few men with me; I told no one what my God had put in my heart to do at Jerusalem; nor was there any animal with me, except the one on which I rode. 夜中に起き出た。数人の者がわたしに伴ったが、わたしは、神がエルサレムのためになそうとして、わたしの心に入れられたことを、だれにも告げ知らせず、またわたしが乗った獣のほかには、獣をつれて行かなかった。
2 13And I went out by night through the Valley Gate to the Serpent Well and the Refuse Gate, and viewed the walls of Jerusalem which were broken down and its gates which were burned with fire. わたしは夜中に出て谷の門を通り、龍の井戸および糞の門に行って、エルサレムのくずれた城壁や、火に焼かれた門を調査し、
2 14 Then I went on to the Fountain Gate and to the King's Pool, but there was no room for the animal under me to pass. また泉の門および王の池に行ったが、わたしの乗っている獣の通るべき所もなかった。
2 15 So I went up in the night by the valley, and viewed the wall; then I turned back and entered by the Valley Gate, and so returned. わたしはまたその夜のうちに谷に沿って上り、城壁を調査したうえ、身をめぐらして、谷の門を通って帰った。
2 16 And the officials did not know where I had gone or what I had done; I had not yet told the Jews, the priests, the nobles, the officials, or the others who did the work. つかさたちは、わたしがどこへ行ったか、何をしたかを知らなかった。わたしはまたユダヤ人にも、祭司たちにも、尊い人たちにも、つかさたちにも、その他工事をする人々にもまだ知らせなかった。
2 17 Then I said to them, "You see the distress that we are in, how Jerusalem lies waste, and its gates are burned with fire. Come and let us build the wall of Jerusalem, that we may no longer be a reproach." しかしわたしはついに彼らに言った、「あなたがたの見るとおり、われわれは難局にある。エルサレムは荒廃し、その門は火に焼かれた。さあ、われわれは再び世のはずかしめをうけることのないように、エルサレムの城壁を築こう」。
2 18 And I told them of the hand of my God which had been good upon me, and also of the king's words that he had spoken to me. So they said, "Let us rise up and build." Then they set their hands to this good work. そして、わたしの神がよくわたしを助けられたことを彼らに告げ、また王がわたしに語られた言葉をも告げたので、彼らは「さあ、立ち上がって築こう」と言い、奮い立って、この良きわざに着手しようとした。
2 19 But when Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite official, and Geshem the Arab heard of it, they laughed at us and despised us, and said, "What is this thing that you are doing? Will you rebel against the king?" ところがホロニびとサンバラテ、アンモンびと奴隷トビヤおよびアラビヤびとガシムがこれを聞いて、われわれをあざけり、われわれを侮って言った、「あなたがたは何をするのか、王に反逆しようとするのか」。
2 20 So I answered them, and said to them, "The God of heaven Himself will prosper us; therefore we His servants will arise and build, but you have no heritage or right or memorial in Jerusalem." わたしは彼らに答えて言った、「天の神がわれわれを恵まれるので、そのしもべであるわれわれは奮い立って築くのである。しかしあなたがたはエルサレムに何の分もなく、権利もなく、記念もない」。
ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 3 3
3 1 Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests and built the Sheep Gate; they consecrated it and hung its doors. They built as far as the Tower of the Hundred, and consecrated it, then as far as the Tower of Hananel. かくて大祭司エリアシブは、その兄弟である祭司たちと共に立って羊の門を建て、これを聖別してそのとびらを設け、さらにこれを聖別して、ハンメアの望楼に及ぼし、またハナネルの望楼にまで及ぼした。
3 2 Next to Eliashib the men of Jericho built. And next to them Zaccur the son of Imri built. 彼の次にはエリコの人々が建て、その次にはイムリの子ザックルが建てた。
3 3 Also the sons of Hassenaah built the Fish Gate; they laid its beams and hung its doors with its bolts and bars. 魚の門はハッセナアの子らが建て、その梁を置き、そのとびらと横木と貫の木とを設けた。
3 4 And next to them Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz, made repairs. Next to them Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabel, made repairs. Next to them Zadok the son of Baana made repairs. その次にハッコヅの子ウリヤの子メレモテが修理し、その次にメシザベルの子ベレキヤの子メシュラムが修理し、その次にバアナの子ザドクが修理した。
3 5 Next to them the Tekoites made repairs; but their nobles did not put their shoulders to the work of their Lord. その次にテコアびとらが修理したが、その貴人たちはその主の工事に服さなかった。
3 6 Moreover Jehoiada the son of Paseah and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah repaired the Old Gate; they laid its beams and hung its doors, with its bolts and bars. 古い門はパセアの子ヨイアダおよびベソデヤの子メシュラムがこれを修理し、その梁を置き、そのとびらと横木と貫の木とを設けた。
3 7 And next to them Melatiah the Gibeonite, Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon and Mizpah, repaired the residence of the governor of the region beyond the River. その次にギベオンびとメラテヤ、メロノテびとヤドン、および川向こうの州の知事の行政下にあるギベオンとミヅパの人々が修理した。
3 8 Next to him Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs. Also next to him Hananiah, one of the perfumers, made repairs; and they fortified Jerusalem as far as the Broad Wall. その次にハルハヤの子ウジエルなどの金細工人が修理し、その次に製香者のひとりハナニヤが修理した。こうして彼らはエルサレムを城壁の広い所まで復旧した。
3 9 And next to them Rephaiah the son of Hur, leader of half the district of Jerusalem, made repairs. その次にエルサレムの半区域の知事ホルの子レパヤが修理し、
3 10 Next to them Jedaiah the son of Harumaph made repairs in front of his house. And next to him Hattush the son of Hashabniah made repairs. その次にハルマフの子エダヤが自分の家と向かい合っている所を修理し、その次にはハシャブニヤの子ハットシが修理した。
3 11 Malchijah the son of Harim and Hashub the son of Pahath-Moab repaired another section, as well as the Tower of the Ovens. ハリムの子マルキヤおよびバハテ・モアブの子ハシュブも他の部分および炉の望楼を修理した。
3 12And next to him was Shallum the son of Hallohesh, leader of half the district of Jerusalem; he and his daughters made repairs. その次にエルサレムの他の半区域の知事ハロヘシの子シャルムがその娘たちと共に修理した。
3 13 Hanun and the inhabitants of Zanoah repaired the Valley Gate. They built it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired a thousand cubits of the wall as far as the Refuse Gate. 谷の門はハヌンがザノアの民と共にこれを修理し、これを建て直して、そのとびらと横木と貫の木とを設け、また糞の門まで城壁一千キュビトを修理した。
3 14 Malchijah the son of Rechab, leader of the district of Beth Haccerem, repaired the Refuse Gate; he built it and hung its doors with its bolts and bars. 糞の門はベテ・ハケレムの区域の知事レカブの子マルキヤがこれを修理し、これを建て直して、そのとびらと横木と貫の木とを設けた。
3 15 Shallun the son of Col-Hozeh, leader of the district of Mizpah, repaired the Fountain Gate; he built it, covered it, hung its doors with its bolts and bars, and repaired the wall of the Pool of Shelah by the King's Garden, as far as the stairs that go down from the City of David. 泉の門はミヅパの区域の知事コロホゼの子シャルンがこれを修理し、これを建て直して、おおいを施し、そのとびらと横木と貫の木とを設けた。彼はまた王の園のほとりのシラの池に沿った石がきを修理して、ダビデの町から下る階段にまで及んだ。
3 16 After him Nehemiah the son of Azbuk, leader of half the district of Beth Zur, made repairs as far as the place in front of the tombs of David, to the man-made pool, and as far as the House of the Mighty. その後にベテズルの半区域の知事アズブクの子ネヘミヤが修理して、ダビデの墓と向かい合った所に及び、掘池と勇士の宅にまで及んだ。
3 17 After him the Levites, under Rehum the son of Bani, made repairs. Next to him Hashabiah, leader of half the district of Keilah, made repairs for his district. その後にバニの子レホムなどのレビびとが修理し、その次にケイラの半区域の知事ハシャビヤがその区域のために修理した。
3 18 After him their brethren, under Bavai the son of Henadad, leader of the other half of the district of Keilah, made repairs. その後にケイラの半区域の知事ヘナダデの子バワイなどその兄弟たちが修理し、
3 19 And next to him Ezer the son of Jeshua, the leader of Mizpah, repaired another section in front of the Ascent to the Armory at the buttress. その次にエシュアの子でミヅパの知事であるエゼルが、城壁の曲りかどにある武器倉に上る所と向かい合った他の部分を修理し、
3 20 After him Baruch the son of Zabbai carefully repaired the other section, from the buttress to the door of the house of Eliashib the high priest. その後にザバイの子バルクが、力をつくして城壁の曲りかどから大祭司エリアシブの家の門までの他の部分を修理し、
3 21 After him Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz, repaired another section, from the door of the house of Eliashib to the end of the house of Eliashib. その後にハッコヅの子ウリヤの子メレモテが、エリアシブの家の門からエリアシブの家の端までの他の部分を修理し、
3 22 And after him the priests, the men of the plain, made repairs. 彼の後に低地の人々である祭司たちが修理し、
3 23 After him Benjamin and Hasshub made repairs opposite their house. After them Azariah the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ananiah, made repairs by his house. その後にベニヤミンおよびハシュブが、自分たちの家と向かい合っている所を修理し、その後にアナニヤの子マアセヤの子アザリヤが、自分の家の附近を修理し、
3 24 After him Binnui the son of Henadad repaired another section, from the house of Azariah to the buttress, even as far as the corner. その後にヘナダデの子ビンヌイが、アザリヤの家から城壁の曲りかど、およびすみまでの他の部分を修理した。
3 25Palal the son of Uzai made repairs opposite the buttress, and on the tower which projects from the king's upper house that was by the court of the prison. After him Pedaiah the son of Parosh made repairs. ウザイの子パラルは、城壁の曲りかどと向かい合っている所、および監視の庭に近い王の上の家から突き出ている望楼と向かい合っている所を修理した。その後にパロシの子ペダヤ、
3 26 Moreover the Nethinim who dwelt in Ophel made repairs as far as the place in front of the Water Gate toward the east, and on the projecting tower. およびオペルに住んでいる宮に仕えるしもべたちが、東の方の水の門と向かい合っている所、および突き出ている望楼と向かい合っている所まで修理した。
3 27 After them the Tekoites repaired another section, next to the great projecting tower, and as far as the wall of Ophel. その後にテコアびとが、突き出ている大望楼と向かい合っている他の部分を修理し、オペルの城壁にまで及んだ。
3 28 Beyond the Horse Gate the priests made repairs, each in front of his own house. 馬の門から上の方は祭司たちが、おのおの自分の家と向かい合っている所を修理した。
3 29 After them Zadok the son of Immer made repairs in front of his own house. After him Shemaiah the son of Shechaniah, the keeper of the East Gate, made repairs. その後にインメルの子ザドクが、自分の家と向かい合っている所を修理し、その後にシカニヤの子シマヤという東の門を守る者が修理し、
3 30 After him Hananiah the son of Shelemiah, and Hanun, the sixth son of Zalaph, repaired another section. After him Meshullam the son of Berechiah made repairs in front of his dwelling. その後にシレミヤの子ハナニヤおよびザラフの第六の子ハヌンが他の部分を修理し、その後にベレキヤの子メシュラムが、自分のへやと向かい合っている所を修理した。
3 31 After him Malchijah, one of the goldsmiths, made repairs as far as the house of the Nethinim and of the merchants, in front of the Miphkad Gate, and as far as the upper room at the corner. その後に金細工人のひとりマルキヤという者が、召集の門と向かい合っている所を修理して、すみの二階のへやに至り、宮に仕えるしもべたちおよび商人の家にまで及んだ。
3 32 And between the upper room at the corner, as far as the Sheep Gate, the goldsmiths and the merchants made repairs. またすみの二階のへやと羊の門の間は金細工人と商人たちがこれを修理した。
ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 4 4
4 1 But it so happened, when Sanballat heard that we were rebuilding the wall, that he was furious and very indignant, and mocked the Jews. サンバラテはわれわれが城壁を築くのを聞いて怒り、大いに憤ってユダヤ人をあざけった。
4 2 And he spoke before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, "What are these feeble Jews doing? Will they fortify themselves? Will they offer sacrifices? Will they complete it in a day? Will they revive the stones from the heaps of rubbish--stones that are burned?" 彼はその兄弟たちおよびサマリヤの兵隊の前で語って言った、「この弱々しいユダヤ人は何をしているのか。自分で再興しようとするのか。犠牲をささげようとするのか。一日で事を終えようとするのか。塵塚の中の石はすでに焼けているのに、これを取りだして生かそうとするのか」。
4 3 Now Tobiah the Ammonite was beside him, and he said, "Whatever they build, if even a fox goes up on it, he will break down their stone wall." またアンモンびとトビヤは、彼のかたわらにいて言った、「そうだ、彼らの築いている城壁は、きつね一匹が上ってもくずれるであろう」と。
4 4 Hear, O our God, for we are despised; turn their reproach on their own heads, and give them as plunder to a land of captivity! 「われわれの神よ、聞いてください。われわれは侮られています。彼らのはずかしめを彼らのこうべに返し、彼らを捕囚の地でぶんどり物にしてください。
4 5 Do not cover their iniquity, and do not let their sin be blotted out from before You; for they have provoked You to anger before the builders. 彼らのとがをおおわず、彼らの罪をみ前から消し去らないでください。彼らは築き建てる者の前であなたを怒らせたからです」。
4 6 So we built the wall, and the entire wall was joined together up to half its height, for the people had a mind to work. こうしてわれわれは城壁を築いたが、石がきはみな相連なって、その高さの半ばにまで達した。民が心をこめて働いたからである。
4 7 Now it happened, when Sanballat, Tobiah, the Arabs, the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites heard that the walls of Jerusalem were being restored and the gaps were beginning to be closed, that they became very angry, ところがサンバラテ、トビヤ、アラビヤびと、アンモンびと、アシドドびとらは、エルサレムの城壁の修理が進展し、その破れ目もふさがり始めたと聞いて大いに怒り、
4 8 and all of them conspired together to come and attack Jerusalem and create confusion. 皆共に相はかり、エルサレムを攻めて、その中に混乱を起そうとした。
4 9 Nevertheless we made our prayer to our God, and because of them we set a watch against them day and night. そこでわれわれは神に祈り、また日夜見張りを置いて彼らに備えた。
4 10 Then Judah said, "The strength of the laborers is failing, and there is so much rubbish that we are not able to build the wall." その時、ユダびとは言った、「荷を負う者の力は衰え、そのうえ、灰土がおびただしいので、われわれは城壁を築くことができない」。
4 11 And our adversaries said, "They will neither know nor see anything, till we come into their midst and kill them and cause the work to cease." またわれわれの敵は言った、「彼らの知らないうちに、また見ないうちに、彼らの中にはいりこんで彼らを殺し、その工事をやめさせよう」。
4 12 So it was, when the Jews who dwelt near them came, that they told us ten times, "From whatever place you turn, they will be upon us." また彼らの近くに住んでいるユダヤ人たちはきて、十度もわれわれに言った、「彼らはその住んでいるすべての所からわれわれに攻め上るでしょう」と。
4 13 Therefore I positioned men behind the lower parts of the wall, at the openings; and I set the people according to their families, with their swords, their spears, and their bows. そこでわたしは民につるぎ、やりおよび弓を持たせ、城壁の後の低い所、すなわち空地にその家族にしたがって立たせた。
4 14 And I looked, and arose and said to the nobles, to the leaders, and to the rest of the people, "Do not be afraid of them. Remember the Lord, great and awesome, and fight for your brethren, your sons, your daughters, your wives, and your houses." わたしは見めぐり、立って尊い人々、つかさたち、およびその他の民らに言った、「あなたがたは彼らを恐れてはならない。大いなる恐るべき主を覚え、あなたがたの兄弟、むすこ、娘、妻および家のために戦いなさい」。
4 15And it happened, when our enemies heard that it was known to us, and that God had brought their plot to nothing, that all of us returned to the wall, everyone to his work. われわれの敵は自分たちの事が、われわれに悟られたことを聞き、また神が彼らの計りごとを破られたことを聞いたので、われわれはみな城壁に帰り、おのおのその工事を続けた。
4 16So it was, from that time on, that half of my servants worked at construction, while the other half held the spears, the shields, the bows, and wore armor; and the leaders were behind all the house of Judah. その日から後は、わたしのしもべの半数は工事に働き、半数はやり、盾、弓、よろいをもって武装した。そしてつかさたちは城壁を築いているユダの全家の後に立った。
4 17 Those who built on the wall, and those who carried burdens, loaded themselves so that with one hand they worked at construction, and with the other held a weapon. 荷を負い運ぶ者はおのおの片手で工事をなし、片手に武器を執った。
4 18 Every one of the builders had his sword girded at his side as he built. And the one who sounded the trumpet was beside me. 築き建てる者はおのおのその腰につるぎを帯びて築き建て、ラッパを吹く者はわたしのかたわらにいた。
4 19 Then I said to the nobles, the rulers, and the rest of the people, "The work is great and extensive, and we are separated far from one another on the wall. わたしは尊い人々、つかさたち、およびその他の民に言った、「工事は大きくかつ広がっているので、われわれは城壁の上で互に遠く離れている。
4 20 Wherever you hear the sound of the trumpet, rally to us there. Our God will fight for us." どこででもラッパの音を聞いたなら、そこにいるわれわれの所に集まってほしい。われわれの神はわれわれのために戦われます」。
4 21 So we labored in the work, and half of the men held the spears from daybreak until the stars appeared. このようにして、われわれは工事を進めたが、半数の者は夜明けから星の出る時まで、やりを執っていた。
4 22 At the same time I also said to the people, "Let each man and his servant stay at night in Jerusalem, that they may be our guard by night and a working party by day." その時わたしはまた民に告げて、「おのおのそのしもべと共にエルサレムの内に宿り、夜はわれわれの護衛者となり、昼は工事をするように」と言った。
4 23 So neither I, my brethren, my servants, nor the men of the guard who followed me took off our clothes, except that everyone took them off for washing. そして、わたしも、わたしの兄弟たちも、わたしのしもべたちも、わたしを護衛する人々も、われわれのうちひとりも、その衣を脱がず、おのおの手に武器を執っていた。
ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 5 5
5 1 And there was a great outcry of the people and their wives against their Jewish brethren. さて、ここに民がその妻と共に、その兄弟であるユダヤ人に向かって大いに叫び訴えることがあった。
5 2 For there were those who said, "We, our sons, and our daughters are many; therefore let us get grain, that we may eat and live." すなわち、ある人々は言った、「われわれはむすこ娘と共に大ぜいです。われわれは穀物を得て、食べて生きていかなければなりません」。
5 3 There were also some who said, "We have mortgaged our lands and vineyards and houses, that we might buy grain because of the famine." またある人々は言った、「われわれは飢えのために、穀物を得ようと田畑も、ぶどう畑も、家も抵当に入れています」。
5 4 There were also those who said, "We have borrowed money for the king's tax on our lands and vineyards. ある人々は言った、「われわれは王の税金のために、われわれの田畑およびぶどう畑をもって金を借りました。
5 5 Yet now our flesh is as the flesh of our brethren, our children as their children; and indeed we are forcing our sons and our daughters to be slaves, and some of our daughters have been brought into slavery. It is not in our power to redeem them, for other men have our lands and vineyards." 現にわれわれの肉はわれわれの兄弟の肉に等しく、われわれの子供も彼らの子供に等しいのに、見よ、われわれはむすこ娘を人の奴隷とするようにしいられています。われわれの娘のうちには、すでに人の奴隷になった者もありますが、われわれの田畑も、ぶどう畑も他人のものになっているので、われわれにはどうする力もありません」。
5 6 And I became very angry when I heard their outcry and these words. わたしは彼らの叫びと、これらの言葉を聞いて大いに怒った。
5 7 After serious thought, I rebuked the nobles and rulers, and said to them, "Each of you is exacting usury from his brother." So I called a great assembly against them. わたしはみずから考えたすえ、尊い人々およびつかさたちを責めて言った、「あなたがたはめいめいその兄弟から利息をとっている」。そしてわたしは彼らの事について大会を開き、
5 8 And I said to them, "According to our ability we have redeemed our Jewish brethren who were sold to the nations. Now indeed, will you even sell your brethren? Or should they be sold to us?" Then they were silenced and found nothing to say. 彼らに言った、「われわれは異邦人に売られたわれわれの兄弟ユダヤ人を、われわれの力にしたがってあがなった。しかるにあなたがたは自分の兄弟を売ろうとするのか。彼らはわれわれに売られるのか」。彼らは黙してひと言もいわなかった。
5 9 Then I said, "What you are doing is not good. Should you not walk in the fear of our God because of the reproach of the nations, our enemies? わたしはまた言った、「あなたがたのする事はよくない。あなたがたは、われわれの敵である異邦人のそしりをやめさせるために、われわれの神を恐れつつ事をなすべきではないか。
5 10 I also, with my brethren and my servants, am lending them money and grain. Please, let us stop this usury! わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、わたしのしもべたちも同じく金と穀物とを貸しているが、われわれはこの利息をやめよう。
5 11Restore now to them, even this day, their lands, their vineyards, their olive groves, and their houses, also a hundredth of the money and the grain, the new wine and the oil, that you have charged them." どうぞ、あなたがたは、きょうにも彼らの田畑、ぶどう畑、オリブ畑および家屋を彼らに返し、またあなたがたが彼らから取っていた金銭、穀物、ぶどう酒、油などの百分の一を返しなさい」。
5 12 So they said, "We will restore it, and will require nothing from them; we will do as you say." Then I called the priests, and required an oath from them that they would do according to this promise. すると彼らは「われわれはそれを返します。彼らから何をも要求しません。あなたの言うようにします」と言った。そこでわたしは祭司たちを呼び、彼らにこの言葉のとおりに行うという誓いを立てさせた。
5 13 Then I shook out the fold of my garment and said, "So may God shake out each man from his house, and from his property, who does not perform this promise. Even thus may he be shaken out and emptied." And all the assembly said, "Amen!" and praised the Lord. Then the people did according to this promise. わたしはまたわたしのふところを打ち払って言った、「この約束を実行しない者を、どうぞ神がこのように打ち払って、その家およびその仕事を離れさせられるように。その人はこのように打ち払われてむなしくなるように」。会衆はみな「アァメン」と言って、主をさんびした。そして民はこの約束のとおりに行った。
5 14 Moreover, from the time that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah, from the twentieth year until the thirty-second year of King Artaxerxes, twelve years, neither I nor my brothers ate the governor's provisions. またわたしは、ユダの地の総督に任ぜられた時から、すなわちアルタシャスタ王の第二十年から第三十二年まで、十二年の間、わたしもわたしの兄弟たちも、総督としての手当を受けなかった。
5 15 But the former governors who were before me laid burdens on the people, and took from them bread and wine, besides forty shekels of silver. Yes, even their servants bore rule over the people, but I did not do so, because of the fear of God. わたしより以前の総督らは民に重荷を負わせ、彼らから銀四十シケルのほかにパンとぶどう酒を取り、また彼らのしもべたちも民を圧迫した。しかしわたしは神を恐れるので、そのようなことはしなかった。
5 16 Indeed, I also continued the work on this wall, and we did not buy any land. All my servants were gathered there for the work. わたしはかえって、この城壁の工事に身をゆだね、どんな土地をも買ったことはない。わたしのしもべたちは皆そこに集まって工事をした。
5 17And at my table were one hundred and fifty Jews and rulers, besides those who came to us from the nations around us. またわたしの食卓にはユダヤ人と、つかさたち百五十人もあり、そのほかに、われわれの周囲の異邦人のうちからきた人々もあった。
5 18 Now that which was prepared daily was one ox and six choice sheep. Also fowl were prepared for me, and once every ten days an abundance of all kinds of wine. Yet in spite of this I did not demand the governor's provisions, because the bondage was heavy on this people. これがために一日に牛一頭、肥えた羊六頭を備え、また鶏をもわたしのために備え、十日ごとにたくさんのぶどう酒を備えたが、わたしはこの民の労役が重かったので、総督としての手当を求めなかった。
5 19 Remember me, my God, for good, according to all that I have done for this people. わが神よ、わたしがこの民のためにしたすべての事を覚えて、わたしをお恵みください。
ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 6 6
6 1 Now it happened when Sanballat, Tobiah, Geshem the Arab, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had rebuilt the wall, and that there were no breaks left in it (though at that time I had not hung the doors in the gates), サンバラテ、トビヤ、アラビヤびとガシムおよびその他のわれわれの敵は、わたしが城壁を築き終って、一つの破れも残らないと聞いた。（しかしその時にはまだ門のとびらをつけていなかったのである。）
6 2 that Sanballat and Geshem sent to me, saying, "Come, let us meet together among the villages in the plain of Ono." But they thought to do me harm. そこでサンバラテとガシムはわたしに使者をつかわして言った、「さあ、われわれはオノの平野にある一つの村で会見しよう」と。彼らはわたしに危害を加えようと考えていたのである。
6 3 So I sent messengers to them, saying, "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you?" それでわたしは彼らに使者をつかわして言わせた、「わたしは大いなる工事をしているから下って行くことはできない。どうしてこの工事をさしおいて、あなたがたの所へ下って行き、その間、工事をやめることができようか」。
6 4 But they sent me this message four times, and I answered them in the same manner. 彼らは四度までこのようにわたしに人をつかわしたが、わたしは同じように彼らに答えた。
6 5 Then Sanballat sent his servant to me as before, the fifth time, with an open letter in his hand. ところが、サンバラテは五度目にそのしもべを前のようにわたしにつかわした。その手には開封の手紙を携えていた。
6 6 In it was written: It is reported among the nations, and Geshem says, that you and the Jews plan to rebel; therefore, according to these rumors, you are rebuilding the wall, that you may be their king. その中に次のようにしるしてあった、「諸国民の間に言い伝えられ、またガシムも言っているが、あなたはユダヤ人と共に反乱を企て、これがために城壁を築いている。またその言うところによれば、あなたは彼らの王になろうとしている。
6 7 And you have also appointed prophets to proclaim concerning you at Jerusalem, saying, "There is a king in Judah!" Now these matters will be reported to the king. So come, therefore, and let us consult together. またあなたは預言者を立てて、あなたのことをエルサレムにのべ伝えさせ、『ユダに王がある』と言わせているが、そのことはこの言葉のとおり王に聞えるでしょう。それゆえ、今おいでなさい。われわれは共に相談しましょう」。
6 8 Then I sent to him, saying, "No such things as you say are being done, but you invent them in your own heart." そこでわたしは彼に人をつかわして言わせた、「あなたの言うようなことはしていません。あなたはそれを自分の心から造り出したのです」と。
6 9 For they all were trying to make us afraid, saying, "Their hands will be weakened in the work, and it will not be done."Now therefore, O God, strengthen my hands. 彼らはみな「彼らの手が弱って工事をやめるようになれば、工事は成就しないだろう」と考えて、われわれをおどそうとしたのである。しかし神よ、どうぞいまわたしの手を強めてください。
6 10 Afterward I came to the house of Shemaiah the son of Delaiah, the son of Mehetabel, who was a secret informer; and he said, "Let us meet together in the house of God, within the temple, and let us close the doors of the temple, for they are coming to kill you; indeed, at night they will come to kill you." さてわたしはメヘタベルの子デラヤの子シマヤの家に行ったところ、彼は閉じこもっていて言った、「われわれは神の宮すなわち神殿の中で会合し、神殿の戸を閉じておきましょう。彼らはあなたを殺そうとして来るからです。きっと夜のうちにあなたを殺そうとして来るでしょう」。
6 11 And I said, "Should such a man as I flee? And who is there such as I who would go into the temple to save his life? I will not go in!" わたしは言った、「わたしのような者がどうして逃げられよう。わたしのような者でだれが神殿にはいって命を全うすることができよう。わたしははいらない」。
6 12 Then I perceived that God had not sent him at all, but that he pronounced this prophecy against me because Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him. わたしは悟った。神が彼をつかわされたのではない。彼がわたしにむかってこの預言を伝えたのは、トビヤとサンバラテが彼を買収したためである。
6 13 For this reason he was hired, that I should be afraid and act that way and sin, so that they might have cause for an evil report, that they might reproach me. 彼が買収されたのはこの事のためである。すなわちわたしを恐れさせ、わたしにこのようにさせて、罪を犯させ、わたしに悪名をきせて侮辱するためであった。
6 14 My God, remember Tobiah and Sanballat, according to these their works, and the prophetess Noadiah and the rest of the prophets who would have made me afraid. わが神よ、トビヤ、サンバラテおよび女預言者ノアデヤならびにその他の預言者など、すべてわたしを恐れさせようとする者たちをおぼえて、彼らが行ったこれらのわざに報いてください。
6 15 So the wall was finished on the twenty-fifth day of Elul, in fifty-two days. こうして城壁は五十二日を経て、エルルの月の二十五日に完成した。
6 16And it happened, when all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations around us saw these things, that they were very disheartened in their own eyes; for they perceived that this work was done by our God. われわれの敵が皆これを聞いた時、われわれの周囲の異邦人はみな恐れ、大いに面目を失った。彼らはこの工事が、われわれの神の助けによって成就したことを悟ったからである。
6 17 Also in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came to them. またそのころ、ユダの尊い人々は多くの手紙をトビヤに送った。トビヤの手紙もまた彼らにきた。
6 18 For many in Judah were pledged to him, because he was the son-in-law of Shechaniah the son of Arah, and his son Jehohanan had married the daughter of Meshullam the son of Berechiah. トビヤはアラの子シカニヤの婿であったので、ユダのうちの多くの者が彼と誓いを立てていたからである。トビヤの子ヨハナンもベレキヤの子メシュラムの娘を妻にめとった。
6 19 Also they reported his good deeds before me, and reported my words to him. Tobiah sent letters to frighten me. 彼らはまたトビヤの善行をわたしの前に語り、またわたしの言葉を彼に伝えた。トビヤはたびたび手紙を送って、わたしを恐れさせようとした。
ネヘミヤ記 Nehemiah 7 7
7 1 Then it was, when the wall was built and I had hung the doors, when the gatekeepers, the singers, and the Levites had been appointed, 城壁が築かれて、とびらを設け、さらに門衛、歌うたう者およびレビびとを任命したので、
7 2 that I gave the charge of Jerusalem to my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the leader of the citadel, for he was a faithful man and feared God more than many. わたしは、わたしの兄弟ハナニと、城のつかさハナニヤに命じて、エルサレムを治めさせた。彼は多くの者にまさって忠信な、神を恐れる者であったからである。
7 3 And I said to them, "Do not let the gates of Jerusalem be opened until the sun is hot; and while they stand guard, let them shut and bar the doors; and appoint guards from among the inhabitants of Jerusalem, one at his watch station and another in front of his own house." わたしは彼らに言った、「日の暑くなるまではエルサレムのもろもろの門を開いてはならない。人々が立って守っている間に門を閉じさせ、貫の木を差せ。またエルサレムの住民の中から番兵を立てて、おのおのにその所を守らせ、またおのおのの家と向かい合う所を守らせよ」。
7 4 Now the city was large and spacious, but the people in it were few, and the houses were not rebuilt. 町は広くて大きかったが、その内の民は少なく、家々はまだ建てられていなかった。
7 5 Then my God put it into my heart to gather the nobles, the rulers, and the people, that they might be registered by genealogy. And I found a register of the genealogy of those who had come up in the first return, and found written in it: 時に神はわたしの心に、尊い人々、つかさおよび民を集めて、家系によってその名簿をしらべようとの思いを起された。わたしは最初に上って来た人々の系図を発見し、その中にこのようにしるしてあるのを見いだした。
7 6 These are the people of the province who came back from the captivity, of those who had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and who returned to Jerusalem and Judah, everyone to his city. バビロンの王ネブカデネザルが捕え移した捕囚のうち、ゆるされてエルサレムおよびユダに上り、おのおの自分の町に帰ったこの州の人々は次のとおりである。
7 7Those who came with Zerubbabel were Jeshua, Nehemiah, Azariah, Raamiah, Nahamani, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispereth, Bigvai, Nehum, and Baanah. The number of the men of the people of Israel: 彼らはゼルバベル、エシュア、ネヘミヤ、アザリヤ、ラアミヤ、ナハマニ、モルデカイ、ビルシャン、ミスペレテ、ビグワイ、ネホム、バアナと一緒に帰ってきた者たちである。そのイスラエルの民の人数は次のとおりである。
7 8 the sons of Parosh, two thousand one hundred and seventy-two; パロシの子孫は二千百七十二人。
7 9the sons of Shephatiah, three hundred and seventy-two; シパテヤの子孫は三百七十二人。
7 10 the sons of Arah, six hundred and fifty-two; アラの子孫は六百五十二人。
7 11 the sons of Pahath-Moab, of the sons of Jeshua and Joab, two thousand eight hundred and eighteen; パハテ・モアブの子孫すなわちエシュアとヨアブの子孫は二千八百十八人。
7 12 the sons of Elam, one thousand two hundred and fifty-four; エラムの子孫は一千二百五十四人。
7 13 the sons of Zattu, eight hundred and forty-five; ザットの子孫は八百四十五人。
7 14 the sons of Zaccai, seven hundred and sixty; ザッカイの子孫は七百六十人。
7 15 the sons of Binnui, six hundred and forty-eight; ビンヌイの子孫は六百四十八人。
7 16 the sons of Bebai, six hundred and twenty-eight; ベバイの子孫は六百二十八人。
7 17 the sons of Azgad, two thousand three hundred and twenty-two; アズガデの子孫は二千三百二十二人。
7 18 the sons of Adonikam, six hundred and sixty-seven; アドニカムの子孫は六百六十七人。
7 19 the sons of Bigvai, two thousand and sixty-seven; ビグワイの子孫は二千六十七人。
7 20 the sons of Adin, six hundred and fifty-five; アデンの子孫は六百五十五人。
7 21 the sons of Ater of Hezekiah, ninety-eight; ヒゼキヤの家のアテルの子孫は九十八人。
7 22 the sons of Hashum, three hundred and twenty-eight; ハシュムの子孫は三百二十八人。
7 23 the sons of Bezai, three hundred and twenty-four; ベザイの子孫は三百二十四人。

7 30 the men of Ramah and Geba, six hundred and twenty-one; ラマおよびゲバの人々は六百二十一人。

7 39The priests: the sons of Jedaiah, of the house of Jeshua, nine hundred and seventy-three; 祭司では、エシュアの家のエダヤの子孫が九百七十三人。

7 58 the sons of Jaala, the sons of Darkon, the sons of Giddel, ヤアラの子孫、ダルコンの子孫、ギデルの子孫、
7 59 the sons of Shephatiah, the sons of Hattil, the sons of Pochereth of Zebaim, and the sons of Amon. シパテヤの子孫、ハッテルの子孫、ポケレテ・ハッゼバイムの子孫、アモンの子孫。
7 60 All the Nethinim, and the sons of Solomon's servants, were three hundred and ninety-two. 宮に仕えるしもべたちとソロモンのしもべであった者たちの子孫とは合わせて三百九十二人。
7 61 And these were the ones who came up from Tel Melah, Tel Harsha, Cherub, Addon, and Immer, but they could not identify their father's house nor their lineage, whether they were of Israel: テルメラ、テルハレサ、ケルブ、アドンおよびインメルから上って来た者があったが、その氏族と、血統とを示して、イスラエルの者であることを明らかにすることができなかった。その人々は次のとおりである。
7 62 the sons of Delaiah, the sons of Tobiah, the sons of Nekoda, six hundred and forty-two; すなわちデラヤの子孫、トビヤの子孫、ネコダの子孫であって、合わせて六百四十二人。
7 63 and of the priests: the sons of Habaiah, the sons of Koz, the sons of Barzillai, who took a wife of the daughters of Barzillai the Gileadite, and was called by their name. また祭司のうちにホバヤの子孫、ハッコヅの子孫、バルジライの子孫がある。バルジライはギレアデびとバルジライの娘たちのうちから妻をめとったので、その名で呼ばれた。
7 64 These sought their listing among those who were registered by genealogy, but it was not found; therefore they were excluded from the priesthood as defiled. これらの者はこの系図に載った者のうちに、自分の籍をたずねたが、なかったので、汚れた者として祭司の職から除かれた。
7 65 And the governor said to them that they should not eat of the most holy things till a priest could consult with the Urim and Thummim. 総督は彼らに告げて、ウリムとトンミムを帯びる祭司の起るまでは、いと聖なる物を食べてはならぬと言った。

7 70 And some of the heads of the fathers' houses gave to the work. The governor gave to the treasury one thousand gold drachmas, fifty basins, and five hundred and thirty priestly garments. 氏族の長のうち工事のためにささげ物をした人々があった。総督は金一千ダリク、鉢五十、祭司の衣服五百三十かさねを倉に納めた。
7 71Some of the heads of the fathers' houses gave to the treasury of the work twenty thousand gold drachmas, and two thousand two hundred silver minas. また氏族の長のうちのある人々は金二万ダリク、銀二千二百ミナを工事のために倉に納めた。

8 3 Then he read from it in the open square that was in front of the Water Gate from morning until midday, before the men and women and those who could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive to the Book of the Law. 水の門の前にある広場で、あけぼのから正午まで、男女および悟ることのできる人々の前でこれを読んだ。民はみな律法の書に耳を傾けた。

8 9 And Nehemiah, who was the governor, Ezra the priest and scribe, and the Levites who taught the people said to all the people, "This day is holy to the Lord your God; do not mourn nor weep." 10 28 Now the rest of the people--the priests, the Levites, the gatekeepers, the singers, the Nethinim, and all those who had separated themselves from the peoples of the lands to the Law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, everyone who had knowledge and understanding-- その他の民、祭司、レビびと、門を守る者、歌うたう者、宮に仕えるしもべ、ならびにすべて国々の民と離れて神の律法に従った者およびその妻、むすこ、娘などすべて知識と悟りのある者は、

10 31 if the peoples of the land brought wares or any grain to sell on the Sabbath day, we would not buy it from them on the Sabbath, or on a holy day; and we would forego the seventh year's produce and the exacting of every debt. またこの地の民らがたとい品物または穀物を安息日に携えて来て売ろうとしても、われわれは安息日または聖日にはそれを買わない。また七年ごとに耕作をやめ、すべての負債をゆるす。
10 32 Also we made ordinances for ourselves, to exact from ourselves yearly one-third of a shekel for the service of the house of our God: われわれはまたみずから規定を設けて、われわれの神の宮の用のために年々シケルの三分の一を出し、
10 33 for the showbread, for the regular grain offering, for the regular burnt offering of the Sabbaths, the New Moons, and the set feasts; for the holy things, for the sin offerings to make atonement for Israel, and all the work of the house of our God. 供えのパン、常素祭、常燔祭のため、安息日、新月および定めの祭の供え物のため、聖なる物のため、イスラエルのあがないをなす罪祭、およびわれわれの神の宮のもろもろのわざのために用いることにした。
10 34 We cast lots among the priests, the Levites, and the people, for bringing the wood offering into the house of our God, according to our fathers' houses, at the appointed times year by year, to burn on the altar of the Lord our God as it is written in the Law. またわれわれ祭司、レビびとおよび民はくじを引いて、律法にしるされてあるようにわれわれの神、主の祭壇の上にたくべきたきぎの供え物を、年々定められた時に氏族にしたがって、われわれの神の宮に納める者を定めた。
10 35 And we made ordinances to bring the firstfruits of our ground and the firstfruits of all fruit of all trees, year by year, to the house of the Lord; またわれわれの土地の初なり、および各種の木の実の初なりを、年々主の宮に携えてくることを誓い、
10 36 to bring the firstborn of our sons and our cattle, as it is written in the Law, and the firstborn of our herds and our flocks, to the house of our God, to the priests who minister in the house of our God; また律法にしるしてあるように、われわれの子どもおよび家畜のういご、およびわれわれの牛や羊のういごを、われわれの神の宮に携えてきて、われわれの神の宮に仕える祭司に渡し、
10 37 to bring the firstfruits of our dough, our offerings, the fruit from all kinds of trees, the new wine and oil, to the priests, to the storerooms of the house of our God; and to bring the tithes of our land to the Levites, for the Levites should receive the tithes in all our farming communities. われわれの麦粉の初物、われわれの供え物、各種の木の実、ぶどう酒および油を祭司のもとに携えて行って、われわれの神の宮のへやに納め、またわれわれの土地の産物の十分の一をレビびとに与えることにした。レビびとはわれわれのすべての農作をなす町において、その十分の一を受くべき者だからである。
10 38 And the priest, the descendant of Aaron, shall be with the Levites when the Levites receive tithes; and the Levites shall bring up a tenth of the tithes to the house of our God, to the rooms of the storehouse. レビびとが十分の一を受ける時には、アロンの子孫である祭司が、そのレビびとと共にいなければならない。そしてまたレビびとはその十分の一の十分の一を、われわれの神の宮に携え上って、へやまたは倉に納めなければならない。
10 39 For the children of Israel and the children of Levi shall bring the offering of the grain, of the new wine and the oil, to the storerooms where the articles of the sanctuary are, where the priests who minister and the gatekeepers and the singers are; and we will not neglect the house of our God. すなわちイスラエルの人々およびレビの子孫は穀物、ぶどう酒、および油の供え物を携えて行って、聖所の器物および勤めをする祭司、門衛、歌うたう者たちのいるへやにこれを納めなければならない。こうしてわれわれは、われわれの神の宮をなおざりにしない。

11 1 Now the leaders of the people dwelt at Jerusalem; the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of ten to dwell in Jerusalem, the holy city, and nine-tenths were to dwell in other cities. 民のつかさたちはエルサレムに住み、その他の民はくじを引いて、十人のうちからひとりずつを、聖都エルサレムに来て住ませ、九人を他の町々に住ませた。

11 3 These are the heads of the province who dwelt in Jerusalem. 11 4 Also in Jerusalem dwelt some of the children of Judah and of the children of Benjamin.The children of Judah: Athaiah the son of Uzziah, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, of the children of Perez; そしてエルサレムにはユダの子孫およびベニヤミンの子孫のうちのある者たちが住んだ。すなわちユダの子孫ではウジヤの子アタヤで、ウジヤはゼカリヤの子、ゼカリヤはアマリヤの子、アマリヤはシパテヤの子、シパテヤはマハラレルの子、マハラレルはペレヅの子孫である。

12 44 And at the same time some were appointed over the rooms of the storehouse for the offerings, the firstfruits, and the tithes, to gather into them from the fields of the cities the portions specified by the Law for the priests and Levites; for Judah rejoiced over the priests and Levites who ministered. その日、倉のもろもろのへやをつかさどる人々を選び、ささげ物、初物、十分の一など律法の定めるところの祭司およびレビびとの分を町々の田畑にしたがって取り集めて、へやに入れることをつかさどらせた。これは祭司およびレビびとの仕えるのを、ユダびとが喜んだからである。
12 45 Both the singers and the gatekeepers kept the charge of their God and the charge of the purification, according to the command of David and Solomon his son. 彼らはダビデおよびその子ソロモンの命令に従って、神の勤めおよび清め事の勤めをした。歌うたう者および門を守る者もそのように行った。
12 46 For in the days of David and Asaph of old there were chiefs of the singers, and songs of praise and thanksgiving to God. 昔ダビデおよびアサフの日には、歌うたう者のかしらがひとりいて、神にさんびと感謝をささげる事があった。
12 47 In the days of Zerubbabel and in the days of Nehemiah all Israel gave the portions for the singers and the gatekeepers, a portion for each day. They also consecrated holy things for the Levites, and the Levites consecrated them for the children of Aaron. またゼルバベルの日およびネヘミヤの日には、イスラエルびとはみな歌うたう者と門を守る者に日々の分を与え、またレビびとに物を聖別して与え、レビびとはまたこれを聖別してアロンの子孫に与えた。

13 1 On that day they read from the Book of Moses in the hearing of the people, and in it was found written that no Ammonite or Moabite should ever come into the assembly of God, その日モーセの書を読んで民に聞かせたが、その中にアンモンびと、およびモアブびとは、いつまでも神の会に、はいってはならないとしるされているのを見いだした。
13 2 because they had not met the children of Israel with bread and water, but hired Balaam against them to curse them. However, our God turned the curse into a blessing. これは彼らがかつて、パンと水をもってイスラエルの人々を迎えず、かえってこれをのろわせるためにバラムを雇ったからである。しかしわれわれの神はそののろいを変えて祝福とされた。
13 3 So it was, when they had heard the Law, that they separated all the mixed multitude from Israel. 人々はこの律法を聞いた時、混血の民をことごとくイスラエルから分け離した。
13 4 Now before this, Eliashib the priest, having authority over the storerooms of the house of our God, was allied with Tobiah. これより先、われわれの神の宮のへやをつかさどっていた祭司エリアシブは、トビヤと縁組したので、
13 5 And he had prepared for him a large room, where previously they had stored the grain offerings, the frankincense, the articles, the tithes of grain, the new wine and oil, which were commanded to be given to the Levites and singers and gatekeepers, and the offerings for the priests. トビヤのために大きなへやを備えた。そのへやはもと、素祭の物、乳香、器物および規定によってレビびと、歌うたう者および門を守る者たちに与える穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一、ならびに祭司のためのささげ物を置いた所である。
13 6 But during all this I was not in Jerusalem, for in the thirty-second year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon I had returned to the king. Then after certain days I obtained leave from the king, その当時、わたしはエルサレムにいなかった。わたしはバビロンの王アルタシャスタの三十二年に王の所へ行ったが、しばらくたって王にいとまを請い、
13 7 and I came to Jerusalem and discovered the evil that Eliashib had done for Tobiah, in preparing a room for him in the courts of the house of God. エルサレムに来て、エリアシブがトビヤのためにした悪事、すなわち彼のために神の宮の庭に一つのへやを備えたことを発見した。
13 8 And it grieved me bitterly; therefore I threw all the household goods of Tobiah out of the room. わたしは非常に怒り、トビヤの家の器物をことごとくそのへやから投げだし、
13 9 Then I commanded them to cleanse the rooms; and I brought back into them the articles of the house of God, with the grain offering and the frankincense. 命じて、すべてのへやを清めさせ、そして神の宮の器物および素祭、乳香などを再びそこに携え入れた。
13 10 I also realized that the portions for the Levites had not been given them; for each of the Levites and the singers who did the work had gone back to his field. わたしはまたレビびとがその受くべき分を与えられていなかったことを知った。これがためにその務をなすレビびとおよび歌うたう者たちは、おのおの自分の畑に逃げ帰った。
13 11 So I contended with the rulers, and said, "Why is the house of God forsaken?" And I gathered them together and set them in their place. それでわたしはつかさたちを責めて言った、「なぜ神の宮を捨てさせたのか」。そしてレビびとを招き集めて、その持ち場に復帰させた。
13 12 Then all Judah brought the tithe of the grain and the new wine and the oil to the storehouse. そこでユダの人々は皆、穀物、ぶどう酒、油の十分の一を倉に携えてきた。
13 13 And I appointed as treasurers over the storehouse Shelemiah the priest and Zadok the scribe, and of the Levites, Pedaiah; and next to them was Hanan the son of Zaccur, the son of Mattaniah; for they were considered faithful, and their task was to distribute to their brethren. わたしは祭司シレミヤ、学者ザドクおよびレビびとペダヤを倉のつかさとし、またマッタニヤの子ザックルの子ハナンをその助手として倉をつかさどらせた。彼らは忠実な者と思われたからである。彼らの任務は兄弟たちに分配する事であった。
13 14Remember me, O my God, concerning this, and do not wipe out my good deeds that I have done for the house of my God, and for its services! わが神よ、この事のためにわたしを覚えてください。わが神の宮とその勤めのためにわたしが行った良きわざをぬぐい去らないでください。
13 15 In those days I saw people in Judah treading wine presses on the Sabbath, and bringing in sheaves, and loading donkeys with wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of burdens, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them about the day on which they were selling provisions. そのころわたしはユダのうちで安息日に酒ぶねを踏む者、麦束を持ってきて、ろばに負わす者、またぶどう酒、ぶどう、いちじくおよびさまざまの荷を安息日にエルサレムに運び入れる者を見たので、わたしは彼らが食物を売っていたその日に彼らを戒めた。
13 16Men of Tyre dwelt there also, who brought in fish and all kinds of goods, and sold them on the Sabbath to the children of Judah, and in Jerusalem. そこに住んでいたツロの人々もまた魚およびさまざまの品物を持ってきて、安息日にユダの人々に売り、エルサレムで商売した。
13 17 Then I contended with the nobles of Judah, and said to them, "What evil thing is this that you do, by which you profane the Sabbath day? そこでわたしはユダの尊い人々を責めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜこの悪事を行って、安息日を汚すのか。
13 18 Did not your fathers do thus, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Yet you bring added wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath." あなたがたの先祖も、このように行ったので、われわれの神はこのすべての災を、われわれとこの町に下されたではないか。ところがあなたがたは安息日を汚して、さらに大いなる怒りをイスラエルの上に招くのである」。
13 19 So it was, at the gates of Jerusalem, as it began to be dark before the Sabbath, that I commanded the gates to be shut, and charged that they must not be opened till after the Sabbath. Then I posted some of my servants at the gates, so that no burdens would be brought in on the Sabbath day. そこで安息日の前に、エルサレムのもろもろの門が暗くなり始めた時、わたしは命じてそのとびらを閉じさせ、安息日が終るまでこれを開いてはならないと命じ、わたしのしもべ数人を門に置いて、安息日に荷を携え入れさせないようにした。
13 20 Now the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. これがために、商人およびさまざまの品物を売る者どもは一、二回エルサレムの外に宿った。
13 21 Then I warned them, and said to them, "Why do you spend the night around the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you!" From that time on they came no more on the Sabbath. わたしは彼らを戒めて言った、「あなたがたはなぜ城壁の前に宿るのか。もしあなたがたが重ねてそのようなことをするならば、わたしはあなたがたを処罰する」と。そのとき以来、彼らは安息日にはこなかった。
13 22 And I commanded the Levites that they should cleanse themselves, and that they should go and guard the gates, to sanctify the Sabbath day. Remember me, O my God, concerning this also, and spare me according to the greatness of Your mercy! わたしはまたレビびとに命じて、その身を清めさせ、来て門を守らせて、安息日を聖別した。わが神よ、わたしのためにまた、このことを覚え、あなたの大いなるいつくしみをもって、わたしをあわれんでください。
13 23 In those days I also saw Jews who had married women of Ashdod, Ammon, and Moab. そのころまた、わたしはアシドド、アンモン、モアブの女をめとったユダヤ人を見た。
13 24 And half of their children spoke the language of Ashdod, and could not speak the language of Judah, but spoke according to the language of one or the other people. 彼らの子供の半分はアシドドの言葉を語って、ユダヤの言葉を語ることができず、おのおのその母親の出た民の言葉を語った。
13 25 So I contended with them and cursed them, struck some of them and pulled out their hair, and made them swear by God, saying, "You shall not give your daughters as wives to their sons, nor take their daughters for your sons or yourselves. わたしは彼らを責め、またののしり、そのうちの数人を撃って、その毛を抜き、神の名をさして誓わせて言った、「あなたがたは彼らのむすこに自分の娘を与えてはならない。またあなたがたのむすこ、またはあなたがた自身のために彼らの娘をめとってはならない。
13 26 Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? Yet among many nations there was no king like him, who was beloved of his God; and God made him king over all Israel. Nevertheless pagan women caused even him to sin. イスラエルの王ソロモンはこれらのことによって罪を犯したではないか。彼のような王は多くの国民のうちにもなく、神に愛せられた者である。神は彼をイスラエル全国の王とせられた。ところが異邦の女たちは彼に罪を犯させた。
13 27 Should we then hear of your doing all this great evil, transgressing against our God by marrying pagan women?" それゆえあなたがたが異邦の女をめとり、このすべての大いなる悪を行って、われわれの神に罪を犯すのを、われわれは聞き流しにしておけようか」。
13 28 And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was a son-in-law of Sanballat the Horonite; therefore I drove him from me. 大祭司エリアシブの子ヨイアダのひとりの子はホロニびとサンバラテの婿であったので、わたしは彼をわたしのところから追い出した。
13 29 Remember them, O my God, because they have defiled the priesthood and the covenant of the priesthood and the Levites. わが神よ、彼らのことを覚えてください。彼らは祭司の職を汚し、また祭司およびレビびとの契約を汚しました。
13 30 Thus I cleansed them of everything pagan. I also assigned duties to the priests and the Levites, each to his service, このように、わたしは彼らを清めて、異邦のものをことごとく捨てさせ、祭司およびレビびとの務を定めて、おのおのそのわざにつかせた。
13 31 and to bringing the wood offering and the firstfruits at appointed times. Remember me, O my God, for good! また定められた時に、たきぎの供え物をささげさせ、また初物をささげさせた。わが神よ、わたしを覚え、わたしをお恵みください。
