1	1 Now it came to pass in the days of Ahasuerus (this was the Ahasuerus who reigned over one hundred and twenty-seven provinces, from India to Ethiopia),	アハシュエロスすなわちインドからエチオピヤまで百二十七州を治めたアハシュエロスの世、
1	2 in those days when King Ahasuerus sat on the throne of his kingdom, which was in Shushan the citadel,	アハシュエロス王が首都スサで、その国の位に座していたころ、
1	3 that in the third year of his reign he made a feast for all his officials and servants--the powers of Persia and Media, the nobles, and the princes of the provinces being before him--	その治世の第三年に、彼はその大臣および侍臣たちのために酒宴を設けた。ペルシャとメデアの将軍および貴族ならびに諸州の大臣たちがその前にいた。
1	4 when he showed the riches of his glorious kingdom and the splendor of his excellent majesty for many days, one hundred and eighty days in all.	その時、王はその盛んな国の富と、その王威の輝きと、はなやかさを示して多くの日を重ね、百八十日に及んだ。
1	5 And when these days were completed, the king made a feast lasting seven days for all the people who were present in Shushan the citadel, from great to small, in the court of the garden of the king's palace.	これらの日が終った時、王は王の宮殿の園の庭で、首都スサにいる大小のすべての民のために七日の間、酒宴を設けた。
1	6There were white and blue linen curtains fastened with cords of fine linen and purple on silver rods and marble pillars; and the couches were of gold and silver on a mosaic pavement of alabaster, turquoise, and white and black marble.	そこには白綿布の垂幕と青色のとばりとがあって、紫色の細布のひもで銀の輪および大理石の柱につながれていた。また長いすは金銀で作られ、石膏と大理石と真珠貝および宝石の切りはめ細工の床の上に置かれていた。
1	7 And they served drinks in golden vessels, each vessel being different from the other, with royal wine in abundance, according to the generosity of the king.	酒は金の杯で賜わり、その杯はそれぞれ違ったもので、王の大きな度量にふさわしく、王の用いる酒を惜しみなく賜わった。
1	8 In accordance with the law, the drinking was not compulsory; for so the king had ordered all the officers of his household, that they should do according to each man's pleasure.	その飲むことは法にかない、だれもしいられることはなかった。これは王が人々におのおの自分の好むようにさせよと宮廷のすべての役人に命じておいたからである。
1	9 Queen Vashti also made a feast for the women in the royal palace which belonged to King Ahasuerus.	王妃ワシテもまたアハシュエロス王に属する王宮の内で女たちのために酒宴を設けた。
1	10 On the seventh day, when the heart of the king was merry with wine, he commanded Mehuman, Biztha, Harbona, Bigtha, Abagtha, Zethar, and Carcas, seven eunuchs who served in the presence of King Ahasuerus,	七日目にアハシュエロス王は酒のために心が楽しくなり、王の前に仕える七人の侍従メホマン、ビズタ、ハルボナ、ビグタ、アバグタ、ゼタルおよびカルカスに命じて、
1	11 to bring Queen Vashti before the king, wearing her royal crown, in order to show her beauty to the people and the officials, for she was beautiful to behold.	王妃ワシテに王妃の冠をかぶらせて王の前にこさせよと言った。これは彼女が美しかったので、その美しさを民らと大臣たちに見せるためであった。
1	12 But Queen Vashti refused to come at the king's command brought by his eunuchs; therefore the king was furious, and his anger burned within him.	ところが、王妃ワシテは侍従が伝えた王の命令に従って来ることを拒んだので、王は大いに憤り、その怒りが彼の内に燃えた。
1	13 Then the king said to the wise men who understood the times (for this was the king's manner toward all who knew law and justice,	そこで王は時を知っている知者に言った、――王はすべて法律と審判に通じている者に相談するのを常とした。
1	14 those closest to him being Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who had access to the king's presence, and who ranked highest in the kingdom):	時に王の次にいた人々はペルシャおよびメデアの七人の大臣カルシナ、セタル、アデマタ、タルシシ、メレス、マルセナ、メムカンであった。彼らは皆王の顔を見る者で、国の首位に座する人々であった――
1	15 "What shall we do to Queen Vashti, according to law, because she did not obey the command of King Ahasuerus brought to her by the eunuchs?"	「王妃ワシテは、アハシュエロス王が侍従をもって伝えた命令を行わないゆえ、法律に従って彼女にどうしたらよかろうか」。
1	16 And Memucan answered before the king and the princes: "Queen Vashti has not only wronged the king, but also all the princes, and all the people who are in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus.	メムカンは王と大臣たちの前で言った、「王妃ワシテはただ王にむかって悪い事をしたばかりでなく、すべての大臣およびアハシュエロス王の各州のすべての民にむかってもしたのです。
1	17 For the queen's behavior will become known to all women, so that they will despise their husbands in their eyes, when they report, 'King Ahasuerus commanded Queen Vashti to be brought in before him, but she did not come.'	王妃のこの行いはあまねくすべての女たちに聞えて、彼らはついにその目に夫を卑しめ、『アハシュエロス王は王妃ワシテに、彼の前に来るように命じたがこなかった』と言うでしょう。
1	18 This very day the noble ladies of Persia and Media will say to all the king's officials that they have heard of the behavior of the queen. Thus there will be excessive contempt and wrath.	王妃のこの行いを聞いたペルシャとメデアの大臣の夫人たちもまた、今日、王のすべての大臣たちにこのように言うでしょう。そうすれば必ず卑しめと怒りが多く起ります。
1	19 If it pleases the king, let a royal decree go out from him, and let it be recorded in the laws of the Persians and the Medes, so that it will not be altered, that Vashti shall come no more before King Ahasuerus; and let the king give her royal position to another who is better than she.	もし王がよしとされるならば、ワシテはこの後、再びアハシュエロス王の前にきてはならないという王の命令を下し、これをペルシャとメデアの法律の中に書きいれて変ることのないようにし、そして王妃の位を彼女にまさる他の者に与えなさい。
1	20 When the king's decree which he will make is proclaimed throughout all his empire (for it is great), all wives will honor their husbands, both great and small."	王の下される詔がこの大きな国にあまねく告げ示されるとき、妻たる者はことごとく、その夫を高下の別なく共に敬うようになるでしょう」。
1	21 And the reply pleased the king and the princes, and the king did according to the word of Memucan.	王と大臣たちはこの言葉をよしとしたので、王はメムカンの言葉のとおりに行った。
1	22 Then he sent letters to all the king's provinces, to each province in its own script, and to every people in their own language, that each man should be master in his own house, and speak in the language of his own people.	王は王の諸州にあまねく書を送り、各州にはその文字にしたがい、各民族にはその言語にしたがって書き送り、すべて男子たる者はその家の主となるべきこと、また自分の民の言語を用いて語るべきことをさとした。

2	1 After these things, when the wrath of King Ahasuerus subsided, he remembered Vashti, what she had done, and what had been decreed against her.	これらのことの後、アハシュエロス王の怒りがとけ、王はワシテおよび彼女のしたこと、また彼女に対して定めたことを思い起した。
2	2 Then the king's servants who attended him said: "Let beautiful young virgins be sought for the king;	時に王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「美しい若い処女たちを王のために尋ね求めましょう。
2	3 and let the king appoint officers in all the provinces of his kingdom, that they may gather all the beautiful young virgins to Shushan the citadel, into the women's quarters, under the custody of Hegai the king's eunuch, custodian of the women. And let beauty preparations be given them.	どうぞ王はこの国の各州において役人を選び、美しい若い処女をことごとく首都スサにある婦人の居室に集めさせ、婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイの管理のもとにおいて、化粧のための品々を彼らに与えてください。
2	4 Then let the young woman who pleases the king be queen instead of Vashti." This thing pleased the king, and he did so.	こうして御意にかなうおとめをとって、ワシテの代りに王妃としてください」。王はこの事をよしとし、そのように行った。
2	5 In Shushan the citadel there was a certain Jew whose name was Mordecai the son of Jair, the son of Shimei, the son of Kish, a Benjamite.	さて首都スサにひとりのユダヤ人がいた。名をモルデカイといい、キシのひこ、シメイの孫、ヤイルの子で、ベニヤミンびとであった。
2	6 Kish had been carried away from Jerusalem with the captives who had been captured with Jeconiah king of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away.	彼はバビロンの王ネブカデネザルが捕えていったユダの王エコニヤと共に捕えられていった捕虜のひとりで、エルサレムから捕え移された者である。
2	7 And Mordecai had brought up Hadassah, that is, Esther, his uncle's daughter, for she had neither father nor mother. The young woman was lovely and beautiful. When her father and mother died, Mordecai took her as his own daughter.	彼はそのおじの娘ハダッサすなわちエステルを養い育てた。彼女には父も母もなかったからである。このおとめは美しく、かわいらしかったが、その父母の死後、モルデカイは彼女を引きとって自分の娘としたのである。
2	8 So it was, when the king's command and decree were heard, and when many young women were gathered at Shushan the citadel, under the custody of Hegai, that Esther also was taken to the king's palace, into the care of Hegai the custodian of the women.	王の命令と詔が伝えられ、多くのおとめが首都スサに集められて、ヘガイの管理のもとにおかれたとき、エステルもまた王宮に携え行かれ、婦人をつかさどるヘガイの管理のもとにおかれた。
2	9 Now the young woman pleased him, and she obtained his favor; so he readily gave beauty preparations to her, besides her allowance. Then seven choice maidservants were provided for her from the king's palace, and he moved her and her maidservants to the best place in the house of the women.	このおとめはヘガイの心にかなって、そのいつくしみを得た。すなわちヘガイはすみやかに彼女に化粧の品々および食物の分け前を与え、また宮中から七人のすぐれた侍女を選んで彼女に付き添わせ、彼女とその侍女たちを婦人の居室のうちの最も良い所に移した。
2	10 Esther had not revealed her people or family, for Mordecai had charged her not to reveal it.	エステルは自分の民のことをも、自分の同族のことをも人に知らせなかった。モルデカイがこれを知らすなと彼女に命じたからである。
2	11 And every day Mordecai paced in front of the court of the women's quarters, to learn of Esther's welfare and what was happening to her.	モルデカイはエステルの様子および彼女がどうしているかを知ろうと、毎日婦人の居室の庭の前を歩いた。
2	12 Each young woman's turn came to go in to King Ahasuerus after she had completed twelve months' preparation, according to the regulations for the women, for thus were the days of their preparation apportioned: six months with oil of myrrh, and six months with perfumes and preparations for beautifying women.	おとめたちはおのおの婦人のための規定にしたがって十二か月を経て後、順番にアハシュエロス王の所へ行くのであった。これは彼らの化粧の期間として、没薬の油を用いること六か月、香料および婦人の化粧に使う品々を用いること六か月が定められていたからである。
2	13 Thus prepared, each young woman went to the king, and she was given whatever she desired to take with her from the women's quarters to the king's palace.	こうしておとめは王の所へ行くのであった。そしておとめが婦人の居室を出て王宮へ行く時には、すべてその望む物が与えられた。
2	14 In the evening she went, and in the morning she returned to the second house of the women, to the custody of Shaashgaz, the king's eunuch who kept the concubines. She would not go in to the king again unless the king delighted in her and called for her by name.	そして夕方行って、あくる朝第二の婦人の居室に帰り、そばめたちをつかさどる王の侍従シャシガズの管理に移された。王がその女を喜び、名ざして召すのでなければ、再び王の所へ行くことはなかった。
2	15 Now when the turn came for Esther the daughter of Abihail the uncle of Mordecai, who had taken her as his daughter, to go in to the king, she requested nothing but what Hegai the king's eunuch, the custodian of the women, advised. And Esther obtained favor in the sight of all who saw her.	さてモルデカイのおじアビハイルの娘、すなわちモルデカイが引きとって自分の娘としたエステルが王の所へ行く順番となったが、彼女は婦人をつかさどる王の侍従ヘガイが勧めた物のほか何をも求めなかった。エステルはすべて彼女を見る者に喜ばれた。
2	16 So Esther was taken to King Ahasuerus, into his royal palace, in the tenth month, which is the month of Tebeth, in the seventh year of his reign.	エステルがアハシュエロス王に召されて王宮へ行ったのは、その治世の第七年の十月、すなわちテベテの月であった。
2	17 The king loved Esther more than all the other women, and she obtained grace and favor in his sight more than all the virgins; so he set the royal crown upon her head and made her queen instead of Vashti.	王はすべての婦人にまさってエステルを愛したので、彼女はすべての処女にまさって王の前に恵みといつくしみとを得た。王はついに王妃の冠を彼女の頭にいただかせ、ワシテに代って王妃とした。
2	18 Then the king made a great feast, the Feast of Esther, for all his officials and servants; and he proclaimed a holiday in the provinces and gave gifts according to the generosity of a king.	そして王は大いなる酒宴を催して、すべての大臣と侍臣をもてなした。エステルの酒宴がこれである。また諸州に免税を行い、王の大きな度量にしたがって贈り物を与えた。
2	19 When virgins were gathered together a second time, Mordecai sat within the king's gate.	二度目に処女たちが集められたとき、モルデカイは王の門にすわっていた。
2	20 Now Esther had not revealed her family and her people, just as Mordecai had charged her, for Esther obeyed the command of Mordecai as when she was brought up by him.	エステルはモルデカイが命じたように、まだ自分の同族のことをも自分の民のことをも人に知らせなかった。エステルはモルデカイの言葉に従うこと、彼に養い育てられた時と少しも変らなかった。
2	21 In those days, while Mordecai sat within the king's gate, two of the king's eunuchs, Bigthan and Teresh, doorkeepers, became furious and sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.	そのころ、モルデカイが王の門にすわっていた時、王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタンとテレシのふたりが怒りのあまりアハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていたが、
2	22 So the matter became known to Mordecai, who told Queen Esther, and Esther informed the king in Mordecai's name.	その事がモルデカイに知れたので、彼はこれを王妃エステルに告げ、エステルはこれをモルデカイの名をもって王に告げた。
2	23 And when an inquiry was made into the matter, it was confirmed, and both were hanged on a gallows; and it was written in the book of the chronicles in the presence of the king.	その事が調べられて、それに相違ないことがあらわれたので、彼らふたりは木にかけられた。この事は王の前で日誌の書にかきしるされた。

3	1 After these things King Ahasuerus promoted Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, and advanced him and set his seat above all the princes who were with him.	これらの事の後、アハシュエロス王はアガグびとハンメダタの子ハマンを重んじ、これを昇進させて、自分と共にいるすべての大臣たちの上にその席を定めさせた。
3	2And all the king's servants who were within the king's gate bowed and paid homage to Haman, for so the king had commanded concerning him. But Mordecai would not bow or pay homage.	王の門の内にいる王の侍臣たちは皆ひざまずいてハマンに敬礼した。これは王が彼についてこうすることを命じたからである。しかしモルデカイはひざまずかず、また敬礼しなかった。
3	3 Then the king's servants who were within the king's gate said to Mordecai, "Why do you transgress the king's command?"	そこで王の門にいる王の侍臣たちはモルデカイにむかって、「あなたはどうして王の命令にそむくのか」と言った。
3	4 Now it happened, when they spoke to him daily and he would not listen to them, that they told it to Haman, to see whether Mordecai's words would stand; for Mordecai had told them that he was a Jew.	彼らは毎日モルデカイにこう言うけれども聞きいれなかったので、その事がゆるされるかどうかを見ようと、これをハマンに告げた。なぜならモルデカイはすでに自分のユダヤ人であることを彼らに語ったからである。
3	5When Haman saw that Mordecai did not bow or pay him homage, Haman was filled with wrath.	ハマンはモルデカイのひざまずかず、また自分に敬礼しないのを見て怒りに満たされたが、
3	6 But he disdained to lay hands on Mordecai alone, for they had told him of the people of Mordecai. Instead, Haman sought to destroy all the Jews who were throughout the whole kingdom of Ahasuerus--the people of Mordecai.	ただモルデカイだけを殺すことを潔しとしなかった。彼らがモルデカイの属する民をハマンに知らせたので、ハマンはアハシュエロスの国のうちにいるすべてのユダヤ人、すなわちモルデカイの属する民をことごとく滅ぼそうと図った。
3	7 In the first month, which is the month of Nisan, in the twelfth year of King Ahasuerus, they cast Pur (that is, the lot), before Haman to determine the day and the month, until it fell on the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.	アハシュエロス王の第十二年の正月すなわちニサンの月に、ハマンの前で、十二月すなわちアダルの月まで、一日一日のため、一月一月のために、プルすなわちくじを投げさせた。
3	8 Then Haman said to King Ahasuerus, "There is a certain people scattered and dispersed among the people in all the provinces of your kingdom; their laws are different from all other people's, and they do not keep the king's laws. Therefore it is not fitting for the king to let them remain.	そしてハマンはアハシュエロス王に言った、「お国の各州にいる諸民のうちに、散らされて、別れ別れになっている一つの民がいます。その法律は他のすべての民のものと異なり、また彼らは王の法律を守りません。それゆえ彼らを許しておくことは王のためになりません。
3	9 If it pleases the king, let a decree be written that they be destroyed, and I will pay ten thousand talents of silver into the hands of those who do the work, to bring it into the king's treasuries."	もし王がよしとされるならば、彼らを滅ぼせと詔をお書きください。そうすればわたしは王の事をつかさどる者たちの手に銀一万タラントを量りわたして、王の金庫に入れさせましょう」。
3	10 So the king took his signet ring from his hand and gave it to Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of the Jews.	そこで王は手から指輪をはずし、アガグびとハンメダタの子で、ユダヤ人の敵であるハマンにわたした。
3	11 And the king said to Haman, "The money and the people are given to you, to do with them as seems good to you."	そして王はハマンに言った、「その銀はあなたに与える。その民もまたあなたに与えるから、よいと思うようにしなさい」。
3	12 Then the king's scribes were called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and a decree was written according to all that Haman commanded--to the king's satraps, to the governors who were over each province, to the officials of all people, to every province according to its script, and to every people in their language. In the name of King Ahasuerus it was written, and sealed with the king's signet ring.	そこで正月の十三日に王の書記官が召し集められ、王の総督、各州の知事および諸民のつかさたちにハマンが命じたことをことごとく書きしるした。すなわち各州に送るものにはその文字を用い、諸民に送るものにはその言語を用い、おのおのアハシュエロス王の名をもってそれを書き、王の指輪をもってそれに印を押した。
3	13 And the letters were sent by couriers into all the king's provinces, to destroy, to kill, and to annihilate all the Jews, both young and old, little children and women, in one day, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, and to plunder their possessions.	そして急使をもってその書を王の諸州に送り、十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日に、一日のうちにすべてのユダヤ人を、若い者、老いた者、子供、女の別なく、ことごとく滅ぼし、殺し、絶やし、かつその貨財を奪い取れと命じた。
3	14 A copy of the document was to be issued as law in every province, being published for all people, that they should be ready for that day.	この文書の写しを詔として各州に伝え、すべての民に公示して、その日のために備えさせようとした。
3	15 The couriers went out, hastened by the king's command; and the decree was proclaimed in Shushan the citadel. So the king and Haman sat down to drink, but the city of Shushan was perplexed.	急使は王の命令により急いで出ていった。この詔は首都スサで発布された。時に王とハマンは座して酒を飲んでいたが、スサの都はあわて惑った。

4	1 When Mordecai learned all that had happened, he tore his clothes and put on sackcloth and ashes, and went out into the midst of the city. He cried out with a loud and bitter cry.	モルデカイはすべてこのなされたことを知ったとき、その衣を裂き、荒布をまとい、灰をかぶり、町の中へ行って大声をあげ、激しく叫んで、
4	2 He went as far as the front of the king's gate, for no one might enter the king's gate clothed with sackcloth.	王の門の入口まで行った。荒布をまとっては王の門の内にはいることができないからである。
4	3 And in every province where the king's command and decree arrived, there was great mourning among the Jews, with fasting, weeping, and wailing; and many lay in sackcloth and ashes.	すべて王の命令と詔をうけ取った各州ではユダヤ人のうちに大いなる悲しみがあり、断食、嘆き、叫びが起り、また荒布をまとい、灰の上に座する者が多かった。
4	4 So Esther's maids and eunuchs came and told her, and the queen was deeply distressed. Then she sent garments to clothe Mordecai and take his sackcloth away from him, but he would not accept them.	エステルの侍女たちおよび侍従たちがきて、この事を告げたので、王妃は非常に悲しみ、モルデカイに着物を贈り、それを着せて、荒布を脱がせようとしたが受けなかった。
4	5 Then Esther called Hathach, one of the king's eunuchs whom he had appointed to attend her, and she gave him a command concerning Mordecai, to learn what and why this was.	そこでエステルは王の侍従のひとりで、王が自分にはべらせたハタクを召し、モルデカイのもとへ行って、それは何事であるか、何ゆえであるかを尋ねて来るようにと命じた。
4	6 So Hathach went out to Mordecai in the city square that was in front of the king's gate.	ハタクは出て、王の門の前にある町の広場にいるモルデカイのもとへ行くと、
4	7 And Mordecai told him all that had happened to him, and the sum of money that Haman had promised to pay into the king's treasuries to destroy the Jews.	モルデカイは自分の身に起ったすべての事を彼に告げ、かつハマンがユダヤ人を滅ぼすことのために王の金庫に量り入れると約束した銀の正確な額を告げた。
4	8 He also gave him a copy of the written decree for their destruction, which was given at Shushan, that he might show it to Esther and explain it to her, and that he might command her to go in to the king to make supplication to him and plead before him for her people.	また彼らを滅ぼさせるために、スサで発布された詔書の写しを彼にわたし、それをエステルに見せ、かつ説きあかし、彼女が王のもとへ行ってその民のために王のあわれみを請い、王の前に願い求めるように彼女に言い伝えよと言った。
4	9 So Hathach returned and told Esther the words of Mordecai.	ハタクが帰ってきてモルデカイの言葉をエステルに告げたので、
4	10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach, and gave him a command for Mordecai:	エステルはハタクに命じ、モルデカイに言葉を伝えさせて言った、
4	11 "All the king's servants and the people of the king's provinces know that any man or woman who goes into the inner court to the king, who has not been called, he has but one law: put all to death, except the one to whom the king holds out the golden scepter, that he may live. Yet I myself have not been called to go in to the king these thirty days."	「王の侍臣および王の諸州の民は皆、男でも女でも、すべて召されないのに内庭にはいって王のもとへ行く者は、必ず殺されなければならないという一つの法律のあることを知っています。ただし王がその者に金の笏を伸べれば生きることができるのです。しかしわたしはこの三十日の間、王のもとへ行くべき召をこうむらないのです」。
4	12 So they told Mordecai Esther's words.	エステルの言葉をモルデカイに告げたので、
4	13 And Mordecai told them to answer Esther: "Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king's palace any more than all the other Jews.	モルデカイは命じてエステルに答えさせて言った、「あなたは王宮にいるゆえ、すべてのユダヤ人と異なり、難を免れるだろうと思ってはならない。
4	14 For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father's house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom for such a time as this?"	あなたがもし、このような時に黙っているならば、ほかの所から、助けと救がユダヤ人のために起るでしょう。しかし、あなたとあなたの父の家とは滅びるでしょう。あなたがこの国に迎えられたのは、このような時のためでなかったとだれが知りましょう」。
4	15 Then Esther told them to reply to Mordecai:	そこでエステルは命じてモルデカイに答えさせた、
4	16 "Go, gather all the Jews who are present in Shushan, and fast for me; neither eat nor drink for three days, night or day. My maids and I will fast likewise. And so I will go to the king, which is against the law; and if I perish, I perish!"	「あなたは行ってスサにいるすべてのユダヤ人を集め、わたしのために断食してください。三日のあいだ夜も昼も食い飲みしてはなりません。わたしとわたしの侍女たちも同様に断食しましょう。そしてわたしは法律にそむくことですが王のもとへ行きます。わたしがもし死なねばならないのなら、死にます」。
4	17 So Mordecai went his way and did according to all that Esther commanded him.	モルデカイは行って、エステルがすべて自分に命じたとおりに行った。

5	1 Now it happened on the third day that Esther put on her royal robes and stood in the inner court of the king's palace, across from the king's house, while the king sat on his royal throne in the royal house, facing the entrance of the house.	三日目にエステルは王妃の服を着、王宮の内庭に入り、王の広間にむかって立った。王は王宮の玉座に座して王宮の入口にむかっていたが、
5	2 So it was, when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, that she found favor in his sight, and the king held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther went near and touched the top of the scepter.	王妃エステルが庭に立っているのを見て彼女に恵みを示し、その手にある金の笏をエステルの方に伸ばしたので、エステルは進みよってその笏の頭にさわった。
5	3 And the king said to her, "What do you wish, Queen Esther? What is your request? It shall be given to you--up to half the kingdom!"	王は彼女に言った、「王妃エステルよ、何を求めるのか。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでもあなたに与えよう」。
5	4 So Esther answered, "If it pleases the king, let the king and Haman come today to the banquet that I have prepared for him."	エステルは言った、「もし王がよしとされるならば、きょうわたしが王のために設けた酒宴に、ハマンとご一緒にお臨みください」。
5	5 Then the king said, "Bring Haman quickly, that he may do as Esther has said." So the king and Haman went to the banquet that Esther had prepared.	そこで王は「ハマンを速く連れてきて、エステルの言うようにせよ」と言い、やがて王とハマンはエステルの設けた酒宴に臨んだ。
5	6 At the banquet of wine the king said to Esther, "What is your petition? It shall be granted you. What is your request, up to half the kingdom? It shall be done!"	酒宴の時、王はエステルに言った、「あなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでも聞きとどけられる」。
5	7 Then Esther answered and said, "My petition and request is this:	エステルは答えて言った、「わたしの求め、わたしの願いはこれです。
5	8 If I have found favor in the sight of the king, and if it pleases the king to grant my petition and fulfill my request, then let the king and Haman come to the banquet which I will prepare for them, and tomorrow I will do as the king has said."	もしわたしが王の目の前に恵みを得、また王がもしわたしの求めを許し、わたしの願いを聞きとどけるのをよしとされるならば、ハマンとご一緒に、あすまた、わたしが設けようとする酒宴に、お臨みください。わたしはあす王のお言葉どおりにいたしましょう」。
5	9 So Haman went out that day joyful and with a glad heart; but when Haman saw Mordecai in the king's gate, and that he did not stand or tremble before him, he was filled with indignation against Mordecai.	こうしてハマンはその日、心に喜び楽しんで出てきたが、ハマンはモルデカイが王の門にいて、自分にむかって立ちあがりもせず、また身動きもしないのを見たので、モルデカイに対し怒りに満たされた。
5	10 Nevertheless Haman restrained himself and went home, and he sent and called for his friends and his wife Zeresh.	しかしハマンは耐え忍んで家に帰り、人をやってその友だちおよび妻ゼレシを呼んでこさせ、
5	11Then Haman told them of his great riches, the multitude of his children, everything in which the king had promoted him, and how he had advanced him above the officials and servants of the king.	そしてハマンはその富の栄華と、そのむすこたちの多いことと、すべて王が自分を重んじられたこと、また王の大臣および侍臣たちにまさって自分を昇進させられたことを彼らに語った。
5	12 Moreover Haman said, "Besides, Queen Esther invited no one but me to come in with the king to the banquet that she prepared; and tomorrow I am again invited by her, along with the king.	ハマンはまた言った、「王妃エステルは酒宴を設けたが、わたしのほかはだれも王と共にこれに臨ませなかった。あすもまたわたしは王と共に王妃に招かれている。
5	13 Yet all this avails me nothing, so long as I see Mordecai the Jew sitting at the king's gate."	しかしユダヤ人モルデカイが王の門に座しているのを見る間は、これらの事もわたしには楽しくない」。
5	14 Then his wife Zeresh and all his friends said to him, "Let a gallows be made, fifty cubits high, and in the morning suggest to the king that Mordecai be hanged on it; then go merrily with the king to the banquet." And the thing pleased Haman; so he had the gallows made.	その時、妻ゼレシとすべての友は彼に言った、「高さ五十キュビトの木を立てさせ、あすの朝、モルデカイをその上に掛けるように王に申し上げなさい。そして王と一緒に楽しんでその酒宴においでなさい」。ハマンはこの事をよしとして、その木を立てさせた。

6	1 That night the king could not sleep. So one was commanded to bring the book of the records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.	その夜、王は眠ることができなかったので、命じて日々の事をしるした記録の書を持ってこさせ、王の前で読ませたが、
6	2 And it was found written that Mordecai had told of Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, the doorkeepers who had sought to lay hands on King Ahasuerus.	その中に、モルデカイがかつて王の侍従で、王のへやの戸を守る者のうちのビグタナとテレシのふたりが、アハシュエロス王を殺そうとねらっていることを告げた、としるされているのを見いだした。
6	3 Then the king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" And the king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him."	そこで王は言った、「この事のために、どんな栄誉と爵位をモルデカイに与えたか」。王に仕える侍臣たちは言った、「何も彼に与えていません」。
6	4 So the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to suggest that the king hang Mordecai on the gallows that he had prepared for him.	王は言った、「庭にいるのはだれか」。この時ハマンはモルデカイのために設けた木にモルデカイを掛けることを王に申し上げようと王宮の外庭にはいってきていた。
6	5 The king's servants said to him, "Haman is there, standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in."	王の侍臣たちが「ハマンが庭に立っています」と王に言ったので、王は「ここへ、はいらせよ」と言った。
6	6 So Haman came in, and the king asked him, "What shall be done for the man whom the king delights to honor?" Now Haman thought in his heart, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?"	やがてハマンがはいって来ると王は言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはどうしたらよかろうか」。ハマンは心のうちに言った、「王はわたし以外にだれに栄誉を与えようと思われるだろうか」。
6	7 And Haman answered the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor,	ハマンは王に言った、「王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人のためには、
6	8 let a royal robe be brought which the king has worn, and a horse on which the king has ridden, which has a royal crest placed on its head.	王の着られた衣服を持ってこさせ、また王の乗られた馬、すなわちその頭に王冠をいただいた馬をひいてこさせ、
6	9 Then let this robe and horse be delivered to the hand of one of the king's most noble princes, that he may array the man whom the king delights to honor. Then parade him on horseback through the city square, and proclaim before him: 'Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!' "	その衣服と馬とを王の最も尊い大臣のひとりの手にわたして、王が栄誉を与えようと思われる人にその衣服を着させ、またその人を馬に乗せ、町の広場を導いて通らせ、『王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ』とその前に呼ばわらせなさい」。
6	10 Then the king said to Haman, "Hurry, take the robe and the horse, as you have suggested, and do so for Mordecai the Jew who sits within the king's gate! Leave nothing undone of all that you have spoken."	それで王はハマンに言った、「急いであなたが言ったように、その衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、王の門に座しているユダヤ人モルデカイにそうしなさい。あなたが言ったことを一つも欠いてはならない」。
6	11 So Haman took the robe and the horse, arrayed Mordecai and led him on horseback through the city square, and proclaimed before him, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor!"	そこでハマンは衣服と馬とを取り寄せ、モルデカイにその衣服を着せ、彼を馬に乗せて町の広場を通らせ、その前に呼ばわって、「王が栄誉を与えようと思う人にはこうするのだ」と言った。
6	12 Afterward Mordecai went back to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered.	こうしてモルデカイは王の門に帰ってきたが、ハマンは憂え悩み、頭をおおって急いで家に帰った。
6	13 When Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had happened to him, his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of Jewish descent, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him."	そしてハマンは自分の身に起った事をことごとくその妻ゼレシと友だちに告げた。するとその知者たちおよび妻ゼレシは彼に言った、「あのモルデカイ、すなわちあなたがその人の前に敗れ始めた者が、もしユダヤ人の子孫であるならば、あなたは彼に勝つことはできない。必ず彼の前に敗れるでしょう」。
6	14 While they were still talking with him, the king's eunuchs came, and hastened to bring Haman to the banquet which Esther had prepared.	彼らがなおハマンと話している時、王の侍従たちがきてハマンを促し、エステルが設けた酒宴に臨ませた。

7	1 So the king and Haman went to dine with Queen Esther.	王とハマンは王妃エステルの酒宴に臨んだ。
7	2 And on the second day, at the banquet of wine, the king again said to Esther, "What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request, up to half the kingdom? It shall be done!"	このふつか目の酒宴に王はまたエステルに言った、「王妃エステルよ、あなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。あなたの願いは何か。国の半ばでも聞きとどけられる」。
7	3 Then Queen Esther answered and said, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it pleases the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request.	王妃エステルは答えて言った、「王よ、もしわたしが王の目の前に恵みを得、また王がもしよしとされるならば、わたしの求めにしたがってわたしの命をわたしに与え、またわたしの願いにしたがってわたしの民をわたしに与えてください。
7	4 For we have been sold, my people and I, to be destroyed, to be killed, and to be annihilated. Had we been sold as male and female slaves, I would have held my tongue, although the enemy could never compensate for the king's loss."	わたしとわたしの民は売られて滅ぼされ、殺され、絶やされようとしています。もしわたしたちが男女の奴隷として売られただけなら、わたしは黙っていたでしょう。わたしたちの難儀は王の損失とは比較にならないからです」。
7	5 So King Ahasuerus answered and said to Queen Esther, "Who is he, and where is he, who would dare presume in his heart to do such a thing?"	アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルに言った、「そんな事をしようと心にたくらんでいる者はだれか。またどこにいるのか」。
7	6 And Esther said, "The adversary and enemy is this wicked Haman!" So Haman was terrified before the king and queen.	エステルは言った、「そのあだ、その敵はこの悪いハマンです」。そこでハマンは王と王妃の前に恐れおののいた。
7	7 Then the king arose in his wrath from the banquet of wine and went into the palace garden; but Haman stood before Queen Esther, pleading for his life, for he saw that evil was determined against him by the king.	王は怒って酒宴の席を立ち、宮殿の園へ行ったが、ハマンは残って王妃エステルに命ごいをした。彼は王が自分に害を加えようと定めたのを見たからである。
7	8 When the king returned from the palace garden to the place of the banquet of wine, Haman had fallen across the couch where Esther was. Then the king said, "Will he also assault the queen while I am in the house?" As the word left the king's mouth, they covered Haman's face.	王が宮殿の園から酒宴の場所に帰ってみると、エステルのいた長いすの上にハマンが伏していたので、王は言った、「彼はまたわたしの家で、しかもわたしの前で王妃をはずかしめようとするのか」。この言葉が王の口から出たとき、人々は、ハマンの顔をおおった。
7	9 Now Harbonah, one of the eunuchs, said to the king, "Look! The gallows, fifty cubits high, which Haman made for Mordecai, who spoke good on the king's behalf, is standing at the house of Haman." Then the king said, "Hang him on it!"	その時、王に付き添っていたひとりの侍従ハルボナが「王のためによい事を告げたあのモルデカイのためにハマンが用意した高さ五十キュビトの木がハマンの家に立っています」と言ったので、王は「彼をそれに掛けよ」と言った。
7	10 So they hanged Haman on the gallows that he had prepared for Mordecai. Then the king's wrath subsided.	そこで人々はハマンをモルデカイのために備えてあったその木に掛けた。こうして王の怒りは和らいだ。

8	1 On that day King Ahasuerus gave Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mordecai came before the king, for Esther had told how he was related to her.	その日アハシュエロス王は、ユダヤ人の敵ハマンの家を王妃エステルに与えた。モルデカイは王の前にきた。これはエステルが自分とモルデカイがどんな関係の者であるかを告げたからである。
8	2 So the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mordecai; and Esther appointed Mordecai over the house of Haman.	王はハマンから取り返した自分の指輪をはずして、モルデカイに与えた。エステルはモルデカイにハマンの家を管理させた。
8	3 Now Esther spoke again to the king, fell down at his feet, and implored him with tears to counteract the evil of Haman the Agagite, and the scheme which he had devised against the Jews.	エステルは再び王の前に奏し、その足もとにひれ伏して、アガグびとハマンの陰謀すなわち彼がユダヤ人に対して企てたその計画を除くことを涙ながらに請い求めた。
8	4 And the king held out the golden scepter toward Esther. So Esther arose and stood before the king,	王はエステルにむかって金の笏を伸べたので、エステルは身を起して王の前に立ち、
8	5 and said, "If it pleases the king, and if I have found favor in his sight and the thing seems right to the king and I am pleasing in his eyes, let it be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, which he wrote to annihilate the Jews who are in all the king's provinces.	そして言った、「もし王がよしとされ、わたしが王の前に恵みを得、またこの事が王の前に正しいと見え、かつわたしが王の目にかなうならば、アガグびとハンメダタの子ハマンが王の諸州にいるユダヤ人を滅ぼそうとはかって書き送った書を取り消す旨を書かせてください。
8	6 For how can I endure to see the evil that will come to my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my countrymen?"	どうしてわたしは、わたしの民に臨もうとする災を、だまって見ていることができましょうか。どうしてわたしの同族の滅びるのを、だまって見ていることができましょうか」。
8	7Then King Ahasuerus said to Queen Esther and Mordecai the Jew, "Indeed, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows because he tried to lay his hand on the Jews.	アハシュエロス王は王妃エステルとユダヤ人モルデカイに言った、「ハマンがユダヤ人を殺そうとしたので、わたしはハマンの家をエステルに与え、またハマンを木に掛けさせた。
8	8 You yourselves write a decree concerning the Jews, as you please, in the king's name, and seal it with the king's signet ring; for whatever is written in the king's name and sealed with the king's signet ring no one can revoke."	あなたがたは自分たちの思うままに王の名をもってユダヤ人についての書をつくり、王の指輪をもってそれに印を押すがよい。王の名をもって書き、王の指輪をもって印を押した書はだれも取り消すことができない」。
8	9 So the king's scribes were called at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day; and it was written, according to all that Mordecai commanded, to the Jews, the satraps, the governors, and the princes of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, one hundred and twenty-seven provinces in all, to every province in its own script, to every people in their own language, and to the Jews in their own script and language.	その時王の書記官が召し集められた。それは三月すなわちシワンの月の二十三日であった。そしてインドからエチオピヤまでの百二十七州にいる総督、諸州の知事および大臣たちに、モルデカイがユダヤ人について命じたとおりに書き送った。すなわち各州にはその文字を用い、各民族にはその言語を用いて書き送り、ユダヤ人に送るものにはその文字と言語とを用いた。
8	10 And he wrote in the name of King Ahasuerus, sealed it with the king's signet ring, and sent letters by couriers on horseback, riding on royal horses bred from swift steeds.	その書はアハシュエロス王の名をもって書かれ、王の指輪をもって印を押し、王の御用馬として、そのうまやに育った早馬に乗る急使によって送られた。
8	11 By these letters the king permitted the Jews who were in every city to gather together and protect their lives--to destroy, kill, and annihilate all the forces of any people or province that would assault them, both little children and women, and to plunder their possessions,	その中で、王はすべての町にいるユダヤ人に、彼らが相集まって自分たちの生命を保護し、自分たちを襲おうとする諸国、諸州のすべての武装した民を、その妻子もろともに滅ぼし、殺し、絶やし、かつその貨財を奪い取ることを許した。
8	12on one day in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar.	ただしこの事をアハシュエロス王の諸州において、十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日に、一日のうちに行うことを命じた。
8	13 A copy of the document was to be issued as a decree in every province and published for all people, so that the Jews would be ready on that day to avenge themselves on their enemies.	この書いた物の写しを詔として各州に伝え、すべての民に公示して、ユダヤ人に、その日のために備えして、その敵にあだをかえさせようとした。
8	14 The couriers who rode on royal horses went out, hastened and pressed on by the king's command. And the decree was issued in Shushan the citadel.	王の御用馬である早馬に乗った急使は、王の命によって急がされ、せきたてられて出て行った。この詔は首都スサで出された。
8	15 So Mordecai went out from the presence of the king in royal apparel of blue and white, with a great crown of gold and a garment of fine linen and purple; and the city of Shushan rejoiced and was glad.	モルデカイは青と白の朝服を着、大きな金の冠をいただき、紫色の細布の上着をまとって王の前から出て行った。スサの町中、声をあげて喜んだ。
8	16 The Jews had light and gladness, joy and honor.	ユダヤ人には光と喜びと楽しみと誉があった。
8	17 And in every province and city, wherever the king's command and decree came, the Jews had joy and gladness, a feast and a holiday. Then many of the people of the land became Jews, because fear of the Jews fell upon them.	いずれの州でも、いずれの町でも、すべて王の命令と詔の伝達された所では、ユダヤ人は喜び楽しみ、酒宴を開いてこの日を祝日とした。そしてこの国の民のうち多くの者がユダヤ人となった。これはユダヤ人を恐れる心が彼らのうちに起ったからである。

9	1 Now in the twelfth month, that is, the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day, the time came for the king's command and his decree to be executed. On the day that the enemies of the Jews had hoped to overpower them, the opposite occurred, in that the Jews themselves overpowered those who hated them.	十二月すなわちアダルの月の十三日、王の命令と詔の行われる時が近づいたとき、すなわちユダヤ人の敵が、ユダヤ人を打ち伏せようと望んでいたのに、かえってユダヤ人が自分たちを憎む者を打ち伏せることとなったその日に、
9	2 The Jews gathered together in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on those who sought their harm. And no one could withstand them, because fear of them fell upon all people.	ユダヤ人はアハシュエロス王の各州にある自分たちの町々に集まり、自分たちに害を加えようとする者を殺そうとしたが、だれもユダヤ人に逆らうことのできるものはなかった。すべての民がユダヤ人を恐れたからである。
9	3 And all the officials of the provinces, the satraps, the governors, and all those doing the king's work, helped the Jews, because the fear of Mordecai fell upon them.	諸州の大臣、総督、知事および王の事をつかさどる者は皆ユダヤ人を助けた。彼らはモルデカイを恐れたからである。
9	4 For Mordecai was great in the king's palace, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for this man Mordecai became increasingly prominent.	モルデカイは王の家で大いなる者となり、その名声は各州に聞えわたった。この人モルデカイがますます勢力ある者となったからである。
9	5 Thus the Jews defeated all their enemies with the stroke of the sword, with slaughter and destruction, and did what they pleased with those who hated them.	そこでユダヤ人はつるぎをもってすべての敵を撃って殺し、滅ぼし、自分たちを憎む者に対し心のままに行った。
9	6 And in Shushan the citadel the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.	ユダヤ人はまた首都スサにおいても五百人を殺し、滅ぼした。
9	7 Also Parshandatha, Dalphon, Aspatha,	またパルシャンダタ、ダルポン、アスパタ、
9	8 Poratha, Adalia, Aridatha,	ポラタ、アダリヤ、アリダタ、
9	9 Parmashta, Arisai, Aridai, and Vajezatha--	パルマシタ、アリサイ、アリダイ、ワエザタ、
9	10 the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews--they killed; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder.	すなわちハンメダタの子で、ユダヤ人の敵であるハマンの十人の子をも殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9	11 On that day the number of those who were killed in Shushan the citadel was brought to the king.	その日、首都スサで殺された者の数が王に報告されると、
9	12 And the king said to Queen Esther, "The Jews have killed and destroyed five hundred men in Shushan the citadel, and the ten sons of Haman. What have they done in the rest of the king's provinces? Now what is your petition? It shall be granted to you. Or what is your further request? It shall be done."	王は王妃エステルに言った、「ユダヤ人は首都スサで五百人を殺し、またハマンの十人の子を殺した。王のその他の諸州ではどんなに彼らは殺したことであろう。さてあなたの求めることは何か。必ず聞かれる。更にあなたの願いは何か。必ず聞きとどけられる」。
9	13 Then Esther said, "If it pleases the king, let it be granted to the Jews who are in Shushan to do again tomorrow according to today's decree, and let Haman's ten sons be hanged on the gallows."	エステルは言った、「もし王がよしとされるならば、どうぞスサにいるユダヤ人にあすも、きょうの詔のように行うことをゆるしてください。かつハマンの十人の子を木に掛けさせてください」。
9	14 So the king commanded this to be done; the decree was issued in Shushan, and they hanged Haman's ten sons.	王はそうせよと命じたので、スサにおいて詔が出て、ハマンの十人の子は木に掛けられた。
9	15 And the Jews who were in Shushan gathered together again on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and killed three hundred men at Shushan; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder.	アダルの月の十四日にまたスサにいるユダヤ人が集まり、スサで三百人を殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9	16 The remainder of the Jews in the king's provinces gathered together and protected their lives, had rest from their enemies, and killed seventy-five thousand of their enemies; but they did not lay a hand on the plunder.	王の諸州にいる他のユダヤ人もまた集まって、自分たちの生命を保護し、その敵に勝って平安を得、自分たちを憎む者七万五千人を殺した。しかし、そのぶんどり物には手をかけなかった。
9	17 This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar. And on the fourteenth day of the month they rested and made it a day of feasting and gladness.	これはアダルの月の十三日であって、その十四日に休んで、その日を酒宴と喜びの日とした。
9	18 But the Jews who were at Shushan assembled together on the thirteenth day, as well as on the fourteenth; and on the fifteenth of the month they rested, and made it a day of feasting and gladness.	しかしスサにいるユダヤ人は十三日と十四日に集まり、十五日に休んで、その日を酒宴と喜びの日とした。
9	19 Therefore the Jews of the villages who dwelt in the unwalled towns celebrated the fourteenth day of the month of Adar with gladness and feasting, as a holiday, and for sending presents to one another.	それゆえ村々のユダヤ人すなわち城壁のない町々に住む者はアダルの月の十四日を喜びの日、酒宴の日、祝日とし、互に食べ物を贈る日とした。
9	20 And Mordecai wrote these things and sent letters to all the Jews, near and far, who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus,	モルデカイはこれらのことを書きしるしてアハシュエロス王の諸州にいるすべてのユダヤ人に、近い者にも遠い者にも書を送り、
9	21 to establish among them that they should celebrate yearly the fourteenth and fifteenth days of the month of Adar,	アダルの月の十四日と十五日とを年々祝うことを命じた。
9	22 as the days on which the Jews had rest from their enemies, as the month which was turned from sorrow to joy for them, and from mourning to a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and joy, of sending presents to one another and gifts to the poor.	すなわちこの両日にユダヤ人がその敵に勝って平安を得、またこの月は彼らのために憂いから喜びに変り、悲しみから祝日に変ったので、これらを酒宴と喜びの日として、互に食べ物を贈り、貧しい者に施しをする日とせよとさとした。
9	23 So the Jews accepted the custom which they had begun, as Mordecai had written to them,	そこでユダヤ人は彼らがすでに始めたように、またモルデカイが彼らに書き送ったように、行うことを約束した。
9	24 because Haman, the son of Hammedatha the Agagite, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to annihilate them, and had cast Pur (that is, the lot), to consume them and destroy them;	これはアガグびとハンメダタの子ハマン、すなわちすべてのユダヤ人の敵がユダヤ人を滅ぼそうとはかり、プルすなわちくじを投げて彼らを絶やし、滅ぼそうとしたが、
9	25 but when Esther came before the king, he commanded by letter that this wicked plot which Haman had devised against the Jews should return on his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows.	エステルが王の前にきたとき、王は書を送って命じ、ハマンがユダヤ人に対して企てたその悪い計画をハマンの頭上に臨ませ、彼とその子らを木に掛けさせたからである。
9	26 So they called these days Purim, after the name Pur. Therefore, because of all the words of this letter, what they had seen concerning this matter, and what had happened to them,	このゆえに、この両日をプルの名にしたがってプリムと名づけた。そしてこの書のすべての言葉により、またこの事について見たところ、自分たちの会ったところによって、
9	27 the Jews established and imposed it upon themselves and their descendants and all who would join them, that without fail they should celebrate these two days every year, according to the written instructions and according to the prescribed time,	ユダヤ人は相定め、年々その書かれているところにしたがい、その定められた時にしたがって、この両日を守り、自分たちと、その子孫およびすべて自分たちにつらなる者はこれを行い続けて廃することなく、
9	28 that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, every family, every province, and every city, that these days of Purim should not fail to be observed among the Jews, and that the memory of them should not perish among their descendants.	この両日を、代々、家々、州々、町々において必ず覚えて守るべきものとし、これらのプリムの日がユダヤ人のうちに廃せられることのないようにし、またこの記念がその子孫の中に絶えることのないようにした。
9	29 Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, with Mordecai the Jew, wrote with full authority to confirm this second letter about Purim.	さらにアビハイルの娘である王妃エステルとユダヤ人モルデカイは、権威をもってこのプリムの第二の書を書き、それを確かめた。
9	30 And Mordecai sent letters to all the Jews, to the one hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, with words of peace and truth,	そしてアハシュエロスの国の百二十七州にいるすべてのユダヤ人に、平和と真実の言葉をもって書を送り、
9	31to confirm these days of Purim at their appointed time, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther had prescribed for them, and as they had decreed for themselves and their descendants concerning matters of their fasting and lamenting.	断食と悲しみのことについて、ユダヤ人モルデカイと王妃エステルが、かつてユダヤ人に命じたように、またユダヤ人たちが、かつて自分たちとその子孫のために定めたように、プリムのこれらの日をその定めた時に守らせた。
9	32 So the decree of Esther confirmed these matters of Purim, and it was written in the book.	エステルの命令はプリムに関するこれらの事を確定した。またこれは書にしるされた。

10	1 And King Ahasuerus imposed tribute on the land and on the islands of the sea.	アハシュエロス王はその国および海に沿った国々にみつぎを課した。
10	2Now all the acts of his power and his might, and the account of the greatness of Mordecai, to which the king advanced him, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Media and Persia?	彼の権力と勢力によるすべての事業、および王がモルデカイを高い地位にのぼらせた事の詳しい話はメデアとペルシャの王たちの日誌の書にしるされているではないか。
10	3 For Mordecai the Jew was second to King Ahasuerus, and was great among the Jews and well received by the multitude of his brethren, seeking the good of his people and speaking peace to all his countrymen.	ユダヤ人モルデカイはアハシュエロス王に次ぐ者となり、ユダヤ人の中にあって大いなる者となり、その多くの兄弟に喜ばれた。彼はその民の幸福を求め、すべての国民に平和を述べたからである。
