ヨハネの手紙第三	3 John 1	1
1	1 The Elder, To the beloved Gaius, whom I love in truth:	長老のわたしから、真実に愛している親愛なるガイオへ。
1	2Beloved, I pray that you may prosper in all things and be in health, just as your soul prospers.	愛する者よ。あなたのたましいがいつも恵まれていると同じく、あなたがすべてのことに恵まれ、またすこやかであるようにと、わたしは祈っている。
1	3 For I rejoiced greatly when brethren came and testified of the truth that is in you, just as you walk in the truth.	兄弟たちがきて、あなたが真理に生きていることを、あかししてくれたので、ひじょうに喜んでいる。事実、あなたは真理のうちを歩いているのである。
1	4 I have no greater joy than to hear that my children walk in truth.	わたしの子供たちが真理のうちを歩いていることを聞く以上に、大きい喜びはない。
1	5 Beloved, you do faithfully whatever you do for the brethren and for strangers,	愛する者よ。あなたが、兄弟たち、しかも旅先にある者につくしていることは、みな真実なわざである。
1	6 who have borne witness of your love before the church. If you send them forward on their journey in a manner worthy of God, you will do well,	彼らは、諸教会で、あなたの愛についてあかしをした。それらの人々を、神のみこころにかなうように送り出してくれたら、それは願わしいことである。
1	7 because they went forth for His name's sake, taking nothing from the Gentiles.	彼らは、御名のために旅立った者であって、異邦人からは何も受けていない。
1	8 We therefore ought to receive such, that we may become fellow workers for the truth.	それだから、わたしたちは、真理のための同労者となるように、こういう人々を助けねばならない。
1	9 I wrote to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to have the preeminence among them, does not receive us.	わたしは少しばかり教会に書きおくっておいたが、みんなのかしらになりたがっているデオテレペスが、わたしたちを受けいれてくれない。
1	10 Therefore, if I come, I will call to mind his deeds which he does, prating against us with malicious words. And not content with that, he himself does not receive the brethren, and forbids those who wish to, putting them out of the church.	だから、わたしがそちらへ行った時、彼のしわざを指摘しようと思う。彼は口ぎたなくわたしたちをののしり、そればかりか、兄弟たちを受けいれようともせず、受けいれようとする人たちを妨げて、教会から追い出している。
1	11 Beloved, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. He who does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.	愛する者よ。悪にならわないで、善にならいなさい。善を行う者は神から出た者であり、悪を行う者は神を見たことのない者である。
1	12 Demetrius has a good testimony from all, and from the truth itself. And we also bear witness, and you know that our testimony is true.	デメテリオについては、あらゆる人も、また真理そのものも、証明している。わたしたちも証明している。そして、あなたが知っているとおり、わたしたちの証明は真実である。
1	13 I had many things to write, but I do not wish to write to you with pen and ink;	あなたに書きおくりたいことはたくさんあるが、墨と筆とで書くことはすまい。
1	14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we shall speak face to face. Peace to you. Our friends greet you. Greet the friends by name.	すぐにでもあなたに会って、直接はなし合いたいものである。
