1	1 Paul, Silvanus, and Timothy, To the church of the Thessalonians in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.	パウロとシルワノとテモテから、父なる神と主イエス・キリストとにあるテサロニケ人たちの教会へ。恵みと平安とが、あなたがたにあるように。
1	2 We give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,	わたしたちは祈の時にあなたがたを覚え、あなたがた一同のことを、いつも神に感謝し、
1	3remembering without ceasing your work of faith, labor of love, and patience of hope in our Lord Jesus Christ in the sight of our God and Father,	あなたがたの信仰の働きと、愛の労苦と、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストに対する望みの忍耐とを、わたしたちの父なる神のみまえに、絶えず思い起している。
1	4 knowing, beloved brethren, your election by God.	神に愛されている兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは、あなたがたが神に選ばれていることを知っている。
1	5 For our gospel did not come to you in word only, but also in power, and in the Holy Spirit and in much assurance, as you know what kind of men we were among you for your sake.	なぜなら、わたしたちの福音があなたがたに伝えられたとき、それは言葉だけによらず、力と聖霊と強い確信とによったからである。わたしたちが、あなたがたの間で、みんなのためにどんなことをしたか、あなたがたの知っているとおりである。

1	7 so that you became examples to all in Macedonia and Achaia who believe.	こうして、マケドニヤとアカヤとにいる信者全体の模範になった。
1	8 For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.	すなわち、主の言葉はあなたがたから出て、ただマケドニヤとアカヤとに響きわたっているばかりではなく、至るところで、神に対するあなたがたの信仰のことが言いひろめられたので、これについては何も述べる必要はないほどである。

2	1 For you yourselves know, brethren, that our coming to you was not in vain.	兄弟たちよ。あなたがた自身が知っているとおり、わたしたちがあなたがたの所にはいって行ったことは、むだではなかった。
2	2 But even after we had suffered before and were spitefully treated at Philippi, as you know, we were bold in our God to speak to you the gospel of God in much conflict.	それどころか、あなたがたが知っているように、わたしたちは、先にピリピで苦しめられ、はずかしめられたにもかかわらず、わたしたちの神に勇気を与えられて、激しい苦闘のうちに神の福音をあなたがたに語ったのである。
2	3 For our exhortation did not come from error or uncleanness, nor was it in deceit.	いったい、わたしたちの宣教は、迷いや汚れた心から出たものでもなく、だましごとでもない。
2	4 But as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, even so we speak, not as pleasing men, but God who tests our hearts.	かえって、わたしたちは神の信任を受けて福音を託されたので、人間に喜ばれるためではなく、わたしたちの心を見分ける神に喜ばれるように、福音を語るのである。
2	5 For neither at any time did we use flattering words, as you know, nor a cloak for covetousness--God is witness.	わたしたちは、あなたがたが知っているように、決してへつらいの言葉を用いたこともなく、口実を設けて、むさぼったこともない。それは、神があかしして下さる。
2	6 Nor did we seek glory from men, either from you or from others, when we might have made demands as apostles of Christ.	また、わたしたちは、キリストの使徒として重んじられることができたのであるが、あなたがたからにもせよ、ほかの人々からにもせよ、人間からの栄誉を求めることはしなかった。
2	7 But we were gentle among you, just as a nursing mother cherishes her own children.	むしろ、あなたがたの間で、ちょうど母がその子供を育てるように、やさしくふるまった。
2	8 So, affectionately longing for you, we were well pleased to impart to you not only the gospel of God, but also our own lives, because you had become dear to us.	このように、あなたがたを慕わしく思っていたので、ただ神の福音ばかりではなく、自分のいのちまでもあなたがたに与えたいと願ったほどに、あなたがたを愛したのである。
2	9 For you remember, brethren, our labor and toil; for laboring night and day, that we might not be a burden to any of you, we preached to you the gospel of God.	兄弟たちよ。あなたがたはわたしたちの労苦と努力とを記憶していることであろう。すなわち、あなたがたのだれにも負担をかけまいと思って、日夜はたらきながら、あなたがたに神の福音を宣べ伝えた。
2	10 You are witnesses, and God also, how devoutly and justly and blamelessly we behaved ourselves among you who believe;	あなたがたもあかしし、神もあかしして下さるように、わたしたちはあなたがた信者の前で、信心深く、正しく、責められるところがないように、生活をしたのである。
2	11 as you know how we exhorted, and comforted, and charged every one of you, as a father does his own children,	そして、あなたがたも知っているとおり、父がその子に対してするように、あなたがたのひとりびとりに対して、
2	12 that you would walk worthy of God who calls you into His own kingdom and glory.	御国とその栄光とに召して下さった神のみこころにかなって歩くようにと、勧め、励まし、また、さとしたのである。
2	13 For this reason we also thank God without ceasing, because when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you welcomed it not as the word of men, but as it is in truth, the word of God, which also effectively works in you who believe.	これらのことを考えて、わたしたちがまた絶えず神に感謝しているのは、あなたがたがわたしたちの説いた神の言を聞いた時に、それを人間の言葉としてではなく、神の言として――事実そのとおりであるが――受けいれてくれたことである。そして、この神の言は、信じるあなたがたのうちに働いているのである。
2	14 For you, brethren, became imitators of the churches of God which are in Judea in Christ Jesus. For you also suffered the same things from your own countrymen, just as they did from the Judeans,	兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは、ユダヤの、キリスト・イエスにある神の諸教会にならう者となった。すなわち、彼らがユダヤ人たちから苦しめられたと同じように、あなたがたもまた同国人から苦しめられた。
2	15 who killed both the Lord Jesus and their own prophets, and have persecuted us; and they do not please God and are contrary to all men,	ユダヤ人たちは主イエスと預言者たちとを殺し、わたしたちを迫害し、神を喜ばせず、すべての人に逆らい、
2	16 forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles that they may be saved, so as always to fill up the measure of their sins; but wrath has come upon them to the uttermost.	わたしたちが異邦人に救の言を語るのを妨げて、絶えず自分の罪を満たしている。そこで、神の怒りは最も激しく彼らに臨むに至ったのである。
2	17 But we, brethren, having been taken away from you for a short time in presence, not in heart, endeavored more eagerly to see your face with great desire.	兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは、しばらくの間、あなたがたから引き離されていたので――心においてではなく、からだだけではあるが――なおさら、あなたがたの顔を見たいと切にこいねがった。
2	18 Therefore we wanted to come to you--even I, Paul, time and again--but Satan hindered us.	だから、わたしたちは、あなたがたの所に行こうとした。ことに、このパウロは、一再ならず行こうとしたのである。それだのに、わたしたちはサタンに妨げられた。

3	1 Therefore, when we could no longer endure it, we thought it good to be left in Athens alone,	そこで、わたしたちはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、わたしたちだけがアテネに留まることに定め、
3	2 and sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God, and our fellow laborer in the gospel of Christ, to establish you and encourage you concerning your faith,	わたしたちの兄弟で、キリストの福音における神の同労者テモテをつかわした。それは、あなたがたの信仰を強め、
3	3 that no one should be shaken by these afflictions; for you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.	このような患難の中にあって、動揺する者がひとりもないように励ますためであった。あなたがたの知っているとおり、わたしたちは患難に会うように定められているのである。
3	4 For, in fact, we told you before when we were with you that we would suffer tribulation, just as it happened, and you know.	そして、あなたがたの所にいたとき、わたしたちがやがて患難に会うことをあらかじめ言っておいたが、あなたがたの知っているように、今そのとおりになったのである。
3	5 For this reason, when I could no longer endure it, I sent to know your faith, lest by some means the tempter had tempted you, and our labor might be in vain.	そこで、わたしはこれ以上耐えられなくなって、もしや「試みる者」があなたがたを試み、そのためにわたしたちの労苦がむだになりはしないかと気づかって、あなたがたの信仰を知るために、彼をつかわしたのである。
3	6 But now that Timothy has come to us from you, and brought us good news of your faith and love, and that you always have good remembrance of us, greatly desiring to see us, as we also to see you--	ところが今テモテが、あなたがたの所からわたしたちのもとに帰ってきて、あなたがたの信仰と愛とについて知らせ、また、あなたがたがいつもわたしたちのことを覚え、わたしたちがあなたがたに会いたく思っていると同じように、わたしたちにしきりに会いたがっているという吉報をもたらした。
3	7 therefore, brethren, in all our affliction and distress we were comforted concerning you by your faith.	兄弟たちよ。それによって、わたしたちはあらゆる苦難と患難との中にありながら、あなたがたの信仰によって慰められた。
3	8 For now we live, if you stand fast in the Lord.	なぜなら、あなたがたが主にあって堅く立ってくれるなら、わたしたちはいま生きることになるからである。
3	9 For what thanks can we render to God for you, for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sake before our God,	ほんとうに、わたしたちの神のみまえで、あなたがたのことで喜ぶ大きな喜びのために、どんな感謝を神にささげたらよいだろうか。
3	10 night and day praying exceedingly that we may see your face and perfect what is lacking in your faith?	わたしたちは、あなたがたの顔を見、あなたがたの信仰の足りないところを補いたいと、日夜しきりに願っているのである。
3	11 Now may our God and Father Himself, and our Lord Jesus Christ, direct our way to you.	どうか、わたしたちの父なる神ご自身と、わたしたちの主イエスとが、あなたがたのところへ行く道を、わたしたちに開いて下さるように。
3	12 And may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all, just as we do to you,	どうか、主が、あなたがた相互の愛とすべての人に対する愛とを、わたしたちがあなたがたを愛する愛と同じように、増し加えて豊かにして下さるように。
3	13 so that He may establish your hearts blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.	そして、どうか、わたしたちの主イエスが、そのすべての聖なる者と共にこられる時、神のみまえに、あなたがたの心を強め、清く、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。

4	1 Finally then, brethren, we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you should abound more and more, just as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God;	最後に、兄弟たちよ。わたしたちは主イエスにあってあなたがたに願いかつ勧める。あなたがたが、どのように歩いて神を喜ばすべきかをわたしたちから学んだように、また、いま歩いているとおりに、ますます歩き続けなさい。
4	2 for you know what commandments we gave you through the Lord Jesus.	わたしたちがどういう教を主イエスによって与えたか、あなたがたはよく知っている。
4	3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality;	神のみこころは、あなたがたが清くなることである。すなわち、不品行を慎み、
4	4 that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,	各自、気をつけて自分のからだを清く尊く保ち、
4	5 not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God;	神を知らない異邦人のように情欲をほしいままにせず、
4	6 that no one should take advantage of and defraud his brother in this matter, because the Lord is the avenger of all such, as we also forewarned you and testified.	また、このようなことで兄弟を踏みつけたり、だましたりしてはならない。前にもあなたがたにきびしく警告しておいたように、主はこれらすべてのことについて、報いをなさるからである。
4	7 For God did not call us to uncleanness, but in holiness.	神がわたしたちを召されたのは、汚れたことをするためではなく、清くなるためである。
4	8Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.	こういうわけであるから、これらの警告を拒む者は、人を拒むのではなく、聖霊をあなたがたの心に賜わる神を拒むのである。
4	9 But concerning brotherly love you have no need that I should write to you, for you yourselves are taught by God to love one another;	兄弟愛については、今さら書きおくる必要はない。あなたがたは、互に愛し合うように神に直接教えられており、
4	10 and indeed you do so toward all the brethren who are in all Macedonia. But we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more;	また、事実マケドニヤ全土にいるすべての兄弟に対して、それを実行しているのだから。しかし、兄弟たちよ。あなたがたに勧める。ますます、そうしてほしい。
4	11 that you also aspire to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you,	そして、あなたがたに命じておいたように、つとめて落ち着いた生活をし、自分の仕事に身をいれ、手ずから働きなさい。
4	12 that you may walk properly toward those who are outside, and that you may lack nothing.	そうすれば、外部の人々に対して品位を保ち、まただれの世話にもならずに、生活できるであろう。
4	13 But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope.	兄弟たちよ。眠っている人々については、無知でいてもらいたくない。望みを持たない外の人々のように、あなたがたが悲しむことのないためである。
4	14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.	わたしたちが信じているように、イエスが死んで復活されたからには、同様に神はイエスにあって眠っている人々をも、イエスと一緒に導き出して下さるであろう。
4	15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will by no means precede those who are asleep.	わたしたちは主の言葉によって言うが、生きながらえて主の来臨の時まで残るわたしたちが、眠った人々より先になることは、決してないであろう。
4	16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of an archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first.	すなわち、主ご自身が天使のかしらの声と神のラッパの鳴り響くうちに、合図の声で、天から下ってこられる。その時、キリストにあって死んだ人々が、まず最初によみがえり、
4	17 Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And thus we shall always be with the Lord.	それから生き残っているわたしたちが、彼らと共に雲に包まれて引き上げられ、空中で主に会い、こうして、いつも主と共にいるであろう。
4	18 Therefore comfort one another with these words.	だから、あなたがたは、これらの言葉をもって互に慰め合いなさい。

5	1 But concerning the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need that I should write to you.	兄弟たちよ。その時期と場合とについては、書きおくる必要はない。
5	2 For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.	あなたがた自身がよく知っているとおり、主の日は盗人が夜くるように来る。
5	3 For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.	人々が平和だ無事だと言っているその矢先に、ちょうど妊婦に産みの苦しみが臨むように、突如として滅びが彼らをおそって来る。そして、それからのがれることは決してできない。
5	4 But you, brethren, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.	しかし兄弟たちよ。あなたがたは暗やみの中にいないのだから、その日が、盗人のようにあなたがたを不意に襲うことはないであろう。
5	5 You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.	あなたがたはみな光の子であり、昼の子なのである。わたしたちは、夜の者でもやみの者でもない。
5	6 Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.	だから、ほかの人々のように眠っていないで、目をさまして慎んでいよう。
5	7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.	眠る者は夜眠り、酔う者は夜酔うのである。
5	8 But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.	しかし、わたしたちは昼の者なのだから、信仰と愛との胸当を身につけ、救の望みのかぶとをかぶって、慎んでいよう。
5	9 For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,	神は、わたしたちを怒りにあわせるように定められたのではなく、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストによって救を得るように定められたのである。
5	10 who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.	キリストがわたしたちのために死なれたのは、さめていても眠っていても、わたしたちが主と共に生きるためである。
5	11 Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.	だから、あなたがたは、今しているように、互に慰め合い、相互の徳を高めなさい。
5	12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,	兄弟たちよ。わたしたちはお願いする。どうか、あなたがたの間で労し、主にあってあなたがたを指導し、かつ訓戒している人々を重んじ、
5	13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work's sake. Be at peace among yourselves.	彼らの働きを思って、特に愛し敬いなさい。互に平和に過ごしなさい。
5	14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.	兄弟たちよ。あなたがたにお勧めする。怠惰な者を戒め、小心な者を励まし、弱い者を助け、すべての人に対して寛容でありなさい。
5	15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.	だれも悪をもって悪に報いないように心がけ、お互に、またみんなに対して、いつも善を追い求めなさい。
5	16Rejoice always,	いつも喜んでいなさい。
5	17 pray without ceasing,	絶えず祈りなさい。
5	18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.	すべての事について、感謝しなさい。これが、キリスト・イエスにあって、神があなたがたに求めておられることである。
5	19 Do not quench the Spirit.	御霊を消してはいけない。
5	20 Do not despise prophecies.	預言を軽んじてはならない。
5	21 Test all things; hold fast what is good.	すべてのものを識別して、良いものを守り、
5	22 Abstain from every form of evil.	あらゆる種類の悪から遠ざかりなさい。
5	23 Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.	どうか、平和の神ご自身が、あなたがたを全くきよめて下さるように。また、あなたがたの霊と心とからだとを完全に守って、わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの来臨のときに、責められるところのない者にして下さるように。
5	24 He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.	あなたがたを召されたかたは真実であられるから、このことをして下さるであろう。
5	25 Brethren, pray for us.	兄弟たちよ。わたしたちのためにも、祈ってほしい。
5	26 Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.	すべての兄弟たちに、きよい接吻をもって、よろしく伝えてほしい。
5	27 I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brethren.	わたしは主によって命じる。この手紙を、みんなの兄弟に読み聞かせなさい。
5	28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.	わたしたちの主イエス・キリストの恵みが、あなたがたと共にあるように。
